CHAPTER ONE

God she hated being here. Hated anything to do with the place. Striding down the corridor she found herself walking into a room full of solemn people. Her eyes scanned their faces until she came across one she thought she recognised. The wiry man locked eyes with her, confirming her suspicion.

"You must be Faith," he said shaking her hand.

"Detective Gregan," Faith acknowledged then looked around. "Where's Kate?"

"I don't know." The man shook his head.

"What do you mean you don't know. Has she seen a doctor yet?" Faith hissed softly, still it sounded loud in the hospital waiting room. "You said on the phone it was a minor accident. How long have you been here?"

"About half an hour. She needs stitches, but it's not serious. She's probably just waiting around to be seen to."

"What happened?" Faith asked bouncing down on an empty seat.

"We were chasing a perp when he went down an alley. We split up and when I found her she was on the ground clutching her shoulder. Said the guy knocked her down and she fell on a broken bottle."

"How bad?" Faith asked closing her eyes.

"Some blood, but it definitely didn't cut an artery. Although she wanted to continue the pursuit I persuaded her to come here." Detective Gregan squatted next to the Slayer. "Don't worry, Faith. I asked her if she had someone who could take her home and that's when she asked me to call you. Your girlfriend is going to be fine."

"My…" Faith shot the man a guarded look. "What makes you think--"

"Because she has mentioned you a couple times."

"She mentioned me?" Faith grinned, momentarily forgetting her worry.

"Couldn't help but see that ring she started wearing a couple of weeks ago. And you have a matching one." They both looked down to the ring.

"God, I hate being around cops. You guys are always so perceptive," Faith joked. Despite the man's occupation she felt comfortable with him. "Thanks for taking care of her."

"Just backing up my partner," Gregan responded.

They fell into a silence, Faith fidgeting in her seat.

"Do you want me to get you a drink?" the detective finally asked.

"Uh…" Faith trailed off as a familiar figure walked towards them. Breaking into a grin she leaped up and wrapped her arms around her lover, mindful of the injured shoulder. "You had me wicked worried."

"Nothing but a few cuts," Kate smiled grateful for Faith's presence. Her left shoulder felt like it had been hit with a sledgehammer. "I'm fine."

"Yeah, well, you don't look fine," Faith commented noticing Kate holding her arm close to her body. "Let's get you home."

Kate looked to Gregan, who was smiling at the lover's exchange. "Thanks Robbie."

"No problem," the man replied with a grin. "The Lieutenant said that he doesn't mind you taking it easy tomorrow, so go home and get some rest."

"What about--"

"I'll handle the case," Gregan smiled. "Now go home with that beautiful girlfriend of yours before I start getting jealous."

Faith winked at the detective before guiding the blonde down the corridor. Once out of earshot of the man, Faith commented, "He seems like an okay guy."

"He is," Kate remarked tentatively putting her good arm around Faith for support. "I hope you brought the car because I can't ride like this."

"You really think that I get a call to pick you up from the hospital and I bring the bike?" Faith kidded. "Geez. I was worried about you…nearly had a heart attack when I was told you were in the hospital."

"I'm sorry I didn't call you myself," Kate sighed as they exited the building and crossed the parking lot.

"That's not why, Kate. I would have been worried if you'd only needed band-aid. How does it feel?"

"How do you think it feels?" Kate snapped.

"Okaaay." Faith held up her hands in surrender. She unlocked her convertible and climbed in. As she started the car, Something For Kate started blaring out from the stereo. Feeling the glare of her lover she shut it off.

"I thought that was my CD," Kate grumbled resting her head back on the seat.

Faith chose to ignore the comment. Instead she smiled to herself as she started the car. Kate had never had anything more than a mild cold since she'd known her. This was the first time she'd seen the blonde sick enough to be bothered by it and she was going to do everything she could to ease her lover's pain. Playing nurse could be fun, Faith thought her smile widening. Though, glancing across at the grim expression on her lover, remember Kate loves to argue when sick.

"Are you listening to me?" Kate asked bumping Faith in the leg.

"Sorry," Faith said unable to disguise her guilt.

"I asked, what did you and Detective Gregan talk about?" Kate said curtly.

"Your injury," Faith crisply replied. "What happened to the guy you were chasing?"

"Fuck if I know."

"And I think it's bedtime for you," Faith mumbled, all thoughts of having fun playing nurse replaced by a deep concern. Stopping at a red light, she looked across at the haggard face of her lover. "Is there anything I can do?"

"No…I'm sorry," Kate sighed.

"For what?" Faith asked pretending she didn't understand.

"For being a bitch. I hate being sick."

"I know the feeling," Faith remarked. "And you're not being a bitch. I wish my healing abilities were transferable right about now."

"Well, I'm not a Chosen One called on to defend the earth," Kate mumbled.

"But you still defend the good citizens of LA," Faith pointed out. "All you good cops deserve something for that."

"Not those that let low life scum get away."

"Low life scum that happened to get lucky. I'm sure you would have caught him if you hadn't been hurt. That was bad luck, baby, nothing more. You know I'm may be the Chosen One but you've done way more good than I have. So don't sweat it, you were good enough to find him once, I'm sure you'll find him again." Faith glanced over, hoping her speech had helped.

"Since when have you become Miss Positivity?" Kate mumbled.

"Since I fell in love and became all corny and sugary sweet," Faith grinned. "No really, watching you work these last few months has given me a respect for what you guys do."

"Well…thanks," Kate smiled.

"Yeah, just don't go spreading rumours about me liking cops."

"You just go to bed with one every night," Kate joked, her mood picking up.

"And loving every moment of it," Faith smirked. "Especially when I have one completely at my mercy."

"Your mercy? Ha." Kate shook her head. "I have you wrapped around my little finger."

"I will never admit that…unless tortured by this gorgeous blonde cop that has me on the edge of an orgasm."

"I'll have to remember that, then," Kate said as they pulled up to their apartment. "Faith?"

"Yeah?" The Slayer asked patiently waiting.

Kate opened her mouth but couldn't say the words to explain how grateful she was for Faith's help. She settled for something that said it all. "I love you."

"I love you too, whether sick or healthy. Hey, that's part of the marriage vows, isn't it?" Faith jumped out of the car and rushed around to the other side to help Kate.

"I can walk," Kate grumbled shaking off her lover's helping hand.

"Yep, in sickness and in health," Faith murmured with amusement watching the dark expression on the blonde. "Hope she gets better soon."

********************

Faith hovered over the bed, watching as Kate settled down in the warm covers. Their Golden Retriever, Alexia, was beside her, making sure her human friend was okay.

"You don't have to watch over me," Kate said looking between two pairs of brown eyes.

"I'm just evening the score, baby. You played nurse when I was shot, now I'm returning the favour."

"There's a big difference between being shot and landing on a few shards of glass."

"Both needed stitches, enough said," Faith grinned. "So, whether you like it or not, you're getting the five star treatment."

"Well, Nurse, this patient would like to be left alone so she can get some sleep," Kate said through gritted teeth. While she loved Faith for trying so hard it had reached the point where she'd had enough. "The more rest I get, the quicker I'll get better. You don't want me to be sick when Buffy comes do you?"

"Okay, I get the hint." Faith rolled her eyes at Alexia. Buffy had arranged to come down on the weekend for some Slayer bonding and to meet Alexia.

"Are you slaying tonight?"

"I'll do a quick patrol." Faith glanced at the clock. "That is if you are going to be alright. Do you need anything else?"

"Faith," Kate warned.

"I'll take that as a no." Faith started heading for the door before she turned around. "Are you sure?"

Kate groaned and threw her pillow at her. Laughing, Faith closed the door, leaving Kate with a puzzled Alexia.

"At least you can't talk back to me," Kate commented to the dog before taking a couple of pills and closing her eyes.

********************

Faith was in the middle of causing some serious bodily harm to a demon when she was interrupted.

"What?" she mumbled opening her eyes and looking to the other side of the bed. Kate was in the middle of her second sneeze.

"Sorry," Kate sniffled once she'd seen to her nose. "I think I have a cold."

Faith reached over and placed her palm on the blonde's forehead. "Ouch, that's hot."

"Guess I should just take the day off," she moaned, cursing her bad luck. Her shoulder wasn't hurting that much, but that piece of good news didn't help her mood.

"Me too," Faith said tucking Kate into the covers.

"What?"

"I've got to look after you," Faith replied with concern.

"No, you have to go to work." Kate coughed before saying, "It's a fucking cold, for gods sake. If it was all that was wrong with me, I'd be going to work too."

"When was the last time you had a sick day?"

"Um…maybe last year sometime."

"Jesus, Kate," Faith exclaimed finally getting out of bed and putting on a robe. "I know the force expects loyalty but that's ridiculous. You've got to take care of yourself."

"Faith." Kate shot her a warning with her eyes.

"No, you don't get to do that," Faith said shaking her finger. "You are always on at me to make sure I'm a hundred percent, but I'm not allowed to care that much about you? That's bullshit."

Kate stared at her girlfriend, holding back a gibe that would only hurt the Slayer. Instead she blew out a breath. "Please go to work, I'll be okay. The first day is always the worst for me."

"You need anything?" Faith asked calmed down by the earnest look she was receiving.

"Just some rest. I'll curl up with a book and make sure I have plenty of fluids."

"And you promise not to do any work, or anything too stressful?" Faith asked coming around to Kate's side of the bed and sitting on the edge.

The concern etched on the Slayer's face was enough for Kate to agree. She nodded. "Now go before I pass it on to you."

"Even if I get it, I won't be sick for long," Faith said ignoring the warning and placing a kiss on Kate's lips, then on her hot forehead. "And I'd rather be sick with you, anyway. We could get through it together."

"Now I know you must love me," Kate joked weakly.

"And I'd get to call in sick," Faith teased before leaning out of way of Kate's half-hearted backhand. "Seriously, since I've been a Slayer I haven't picked up a bad virus. But I'm not immune, so you better not be carrying any flu bugs."

"Doesn't feel like the flu," Kate reassured her. "Now you'd better get going if you want to take Alex for a run before work."

"Don't forget to call the precinct," Faith said before daring to give her lover another kiss. She took one last glance at her before starting her day by getting dressed for her run.

********************

Through her sleep-ridden mind, Kate heard Alexia jump off the bed and run out of the bedroom, then she heard her lover's voice talking to the Golden. But it wasn't until she felt a pair of lips on her knuckles that she reluctantly departed the land of sleep.

"Hey," Faith whispered softly. "How's my favourite cop doing?"

Kate rubbed her eyes before yawning. "Feeling like I could use a shower."

"I brought you some medication."

"Thanks," Kate said before reaching for the bedside. Faith got there first and handed her the glass of water. After directing a frown Faith's way, she proceeded to gulp it down.

"Want more?" Faith asked taking the empty glass away.

"Let me freshen up, then I'll have some dinner." The pain in her shoulder had been reduced to a dull ache.

"I can heat some soup for you?" Faith asked eagerly.

Kate surrendered to the pleading expression radiating from the Slayer. Besides soup sounded good. "Okay."

When she emerged feeling clean and healthier, Faith immediately poured her a bowl and set it down at the table. Across from her were a stack of tablet boxes and bottles.

"Uh, honey, did you bring the whole drugstore home with you?"

Faith gave her a sheepish grin. "I didn't know which one worked for you, so I got the whole range."

"It must have cost you a fortune," Kate exclaimed.

"When it comes to you, nothing is too expensive." Faith answered with such an innocent grin that Kate let it slide. "What did you do today?"

"Slept, read, slept, let Alexia outside, slept," Kate intoned. She started on her soup, enjoying the ease at which the liquid went down her sore throat.

"And Alex was a good girl for you?" Faith asked as she glanced at the lying dog a few feet away. Her brown eyes were keeping a watch on Faith, hoping for a run or her dinner.

"Yep, she was with me most of the day," Kate replied with a fond glance Alexia's way. "Gave me lots of love."

"Aren't you a cutie," Faith cooed to the dog, making the bushy tail wag. "Yes, you are."

"Slaying tonight?"

"Not unless I don't have to worry about you."

"You don't." Kate looked over her spoon at her doting lover.

"Are you going to work tomorrow?"

"Yes." When Faith lifted a finger to shake it at her, she quickly said, "It's for one day, then I'll have the weekend to recover."

"But B's coming down," Faith moaned.

"Maybe we should arrange it for another weekend."

"I don't think so." Faith quickly snatched up the bowl Kate had only moments ago emptied. "More?"

Kate nodded before returning to the subject, "It's not too late to call her."

"Do you mind if she comes?" Faith asked hesitantly placing the refilled bowl back down on the table.

"No." Kate shook her head. "But how can you look after me and spend time with her?"

Faith stared at her lover for a second before watching Kate's lips curl in a smile. "Ha ha. You're making fun of my bedside manner."

"As much as I love you for it, you are being a little," she held out her thumb and index finger indicating the amount, "overbearing. If you wanted to help you could change my shoulder bandage for me before you go out."

"How is your shoulder?" Faith asked coming around to her side.

"Faith," she warned and sighed.

"Hey, I was just asking. You haven't mentioned it all day."

"Only the occasional throbbing," Kate answered. "I bet it doesn't look too good, though. Probably still red and swollen."

"I'll take a look in a moment. You finish that," Faith pointed to the half full bowl.

"Then you can get some exercise."

Faith smiled. "I get the hint. And I thought I was bad at being sick." She disappeared down the small hall to their bedroom leaving Kate shaking her fist at her.

********************

Faith ducked and ducked again. Then spun and executed a successful kick into the vampire's stomach.

"Surely a Slayer can kick harder than that!"

"Ooh, a chatty vampire," Faith smiled playfully eyeing the demon. She didn't want to spend the rest of her Friday night making nice with it, though. "Make the most of it because you won't be able to talk in a couple of minutes."

"Couple of minutes? I'm not one of those new demons, you know. I've been around." They circled each other, both enjoying the break from the tedious battle.

"Yeah?" Faith cocked her head. "How long?"

"I've seen in two new centuries," the vampire boasted. "And a new millennium. What a party bringing in 2000 was… too bad about the computer bug. I would have liked to see that. Chaos, mayhem…"

"Yeah, well I missed that New Year's Eve," Faith shrugged nonchalantly.

Angered by the reason she missed the party she went on the attack with the vampire. When it was evident that the vampire was going to lose, he rolled away from a thrust of the stake and wasted no time in running for his undead life. Faith gave chase, but her mind had drifted back to the demon's words. She'd missed a lot of things during her coma, the New Year just one of many events that she had no idea about.

She stopped at an empty junction and threw her stake down in disgust at having let the vampire go. Looking left and right didn't give her any clues, so she wearily picked up the sharp piece of wood and started on her way back home.

"Eight months," she whispered aloud. "Eight fucking months." The mayor was right, the world had moved on during her coma. She was lucky that she had caught up with it once again.

"Lucky?" She muttered to herself. "Yeah right."

What had she missed? No one ever dared to bring up the subject. Those that surrounded her either knew her past or didn't care. If someone referred to an event during that time…well she wasn't up on history or world politics anyway, so she could plead ignorance and get away with it. Though knowing who won the Superbowl and the World Series would be wicked nice.

She picked up the pace, trying to concentrate on the person that awaited her at home.

"What's the matter?" Kate asked as Faith slammed the door and threw her keys on the table.

"Nothing," Faith shrugged, untangling herself from Alexia and making her way to the couch. There she studied her lover, noting the red nose and the worn look. She reached over and placed a kiss on the warm forehead before retreating to put some space between her and the germs.

"How did the slay go?" Kate said after taking time to blow her nose.

"Five by five. How are you feeling?" Faith gave her lover her best smile determined not to burden Kate with her thoughts.

"Okay, I guess," Kate shrugged looking down.

"Come on, Kate." Faith gave her a questioning glance. "Can I do anything for you?"

"Faith, it's just a cold. I just have to ride it out."

"But…" Faith sighed. "You're always the one looking after me. For once, I want to do that for you. Can't I at least make you some hot chocolate?"

"Okay," Kate sniffled. "Then you can tell me what's wrong."

"Nothing's wrong."

"I may be sick, but I'm not that sick," Kate said managing a small smile. "Hot chocolate, then talk."

She watched as Faith walked into the kitchen, then closed her eyes. Her head hurt and her nose hadn't been clear for hours, but the tension she saw in the Slayer was more important than her own aches and pains. She heard Faith step back into the room and take a seat beside her.

"Thanks," Kate smiled and snuggled into the blanket wrapped around her. "Are you hurt?"

"No," Faith shook her head. "Vamp got away though."

"That's not the problem though, is it?" Kate reached out and patted her lover's thigh.

"Nah." The dark eyes disappeared for a moment then opened as Faith took in a deep breath. "I missed eight months of my life. Gone, just like that."

"What made you think of this?" Kate asked gently.

"Vampire boasted about how long he'd lived, mentioned that he'd seen the party of the century. The New Year that I happened to celebrate in a coma."

"And?"

"Um…when I woke up the world felt different, you know…Well you wouldn't," Faith chuckled to herself. "But after I'd caught up on how everyone was doing…Buffy with a new guy, Willow gay, Angel in LA, well it's like it never happened. The world didn't change that much in eight months. It's not like in those time travel movies where everything is new. So…" Faith looked up and saw the patient but concerned face of her lover. "It was easy to forget. It never really bothered me. I mean no one missed me, right? There was no one who had been grieving. But now…"

"How could you forget?" Kate asked softly.

"I wanted to, I mean wouldn't you? Being here in LA helped me to -- new town, new people -- just like coming to California was a good way to forget Boston. It never bothered me until now."

"Why now?" Kate asked before coughing loudly.

"I don't know. Maybe because I now understand how precious time is. Eight months now wouldn't just affect me…" Faith looked across at her lover indicating just whom else it would affect.

"No. But, I'd be by your bedside every day waiting for you to wake up," Kate whispered. "Have you and Buffy ever talked about the coma?"

"B?" Faith shook her head. "That's something that we can't talk about. God, Kate, the things I put her through to make her cross that line…" Faith shook her head again. "It's not her fault."

"Really?"

"Really."

"You mean you don't harbour any resentment for what she did?" Kate watched as Faith froze at the words and quickly continued. "You may think you deserved it, but Buffy made it into a vendetta. It's all right to have some anger towards her. Most people would."

"Most people don't go around murdering and poisoning others."

"Well she's coming tomorrow. Maybe it would be good to get this off your chest."

"Kate, I can't put her through that," Faith complained. "She's taken more than enough shit from me."

"It might be good for her too. From the way everyone talks, it sounds like she never dealt with it either. Forgot about stabbing you the way you forgot about missing eight months of your life."

"Enough of that." Faith leaned over and took Kate into her arms. "I want to concentrate on you getting well."

"Really, I'm not that bad," Kate said and coughed again. After she'd cleared her throat she yawned deeply.

"Bedtime for you," Faith teased. "I need a shower then I'll join you."

"Okay," Kate agreed not bothering to hide another yawn.

"Alright then," Faith grinned and scooped Kate up in her arms and carried her the short distance to the bedroom. Too tired to protest, Kate let herself be laid out on the bed and tucked in, Faith ever mindful of her shoulder.

Faith bestowed a kiss on her forehead then headed into the bathroom. As she undressed her mind went back to the coma. Her fingers brushed the vertical scar on her stomach. It had been over two years now since she'd been stabbed, but the scar would remain there forever. The long line was faint enough to not notice from a distance, but she knew it was there. The pain of impact still shocked her every time she remembered. Her dreams replayed the event at least once a month, never letting her forget. Buffy may have thrust the knife into her, but it was her own actions that caused the blonde Slayer to want to do it. Kidnapping Willow, poisoning Angel…memories conveniently forgotten by them all. They each gave her their forgiveness, some more reluctantly than others.

She soaped herself on autopilot thinking back to the day she went to Sunnydale to seek forgiveness. She'd expected a rough reception, but Buffy was still working through her break-up with Riley and her mother's illness and forgave her after much grovelling and babbling on Faith's part. They never talked about what Buffy did to her, nor their actions leading up to the Graduation Eve fight. By some unspoken rule they decided to move on.

Turning off the water, she reached for a towel, her mind still fixed on her history with the other Slayer. She cringed as she thought about knocking Joyce out. Buffy's mother was one cool chick and she was gone now. Faith drew in a sharp breath at the pain she felt. Mrs Summer's may not have been the perfect mother, but damn she was close. Even that small time she'd spent in Buffy's body, she'd felt more love from Joyce than she'd ever felt from her own mother.

Eight months, her mind reminded her. When she'd woken up, she wanted nothing more than to take from Buffy what Buffy had taken from her, but over time she knew that she'd almost dared Buffy to do what she did. She still remembered her words as she and Buffy squared off on the college campus. 'You took my life, B. Paybacks a bitch.' Payback was the last thing she wanted these days. Or did she? Buffy had tried to kill her and if she weren't a Slayer, she would have died. Buffy had nearly become her.

Shivering in the cool bathroom, she quietly made her way into the bedroom. Kate was snoring loudly, so she slipped into bed and turned off the light. Maybe Kate was right, both Slayers needed to deal with their problems. Then again, this was Kate encouraging her to talk…something the blonde hardly did herself.

********************

"That's mine."

"Well, you're about to get it back," Buffy said before she plunged HER knife into her.

"Fuck!" Faith screamed out as Buffy smiled at her.

"Payback's really are…I don't know…fun, you bitch." Buffy laughed and pushed her off the roof.

"Faith!"

"Kate?" Faith asked as she heard her lover's voice. Kate wasn't supposed to be there.

"Faith, wake up."

"Wake up?"

Kate finally dislodged Faith from her dream, "Nightmare?"

"You think?" the Slayer mumbled.

"Well, fuck can be screamed out in more ways than one, but that scream can only be described as tortured pain." Kate rolled over to face her and put an arm around her. "Past or present?"

"Past," Faith answered with a swallow. She'd had so many nightmares with Kate next to her that they had a shorthand way of talking about them in the middle of the night. "Don't wanna talk."

"Love you," Kate said before pulling away to blow her nose.

Looking at the clock and noticing that the sun was starting to rise, Faith smiled at the suffering blonde. "Want tea or coffee?"

"How about a new nose?"

"Sorry, not a witch. I'm not going to be able to get back to sleep so I may as well do something useful."

Kate glanced at the clock and sighed. "Tea in an hour thanks."

"You sure you're up to visitors."

"One visitor and yes I am. I don't feel as bad as yesterday, it's just this damned blasted nose of mine," Kate grumbled. "What time did Buffy say she would be here?"

"About 11. I'll take Alex out then I'll be back," Faith said patting the body next to hers. "Get some rest."

"Yes, mother," Kate joked and stuck out her tongue.

"You think my maternal instincts are coming out, huh?" Faith smirked. "No way, baby. No way in hell."

Still shaken from the nightmare a few of hours later, Faith paced the living room waiting for Kate to finish dressing. Buffy was due to arrive any minute and Faith's stomach felt heavy. The image of Buffy turning up with a knife wouldn't go away.

"Faith?" Kate asked walking into the room. She felt better after a sleep and a shower. Her nose was even behaving. "I suggested you talk to her about the coma, not that you have to. Only if you feel ready."

Faith stopped her pacing and breathed out in a small sigh. "How the hell do you know what I'm always thinking?" she asked with a smile.

"I don't, that would take the fun out of being with you. But I am a detective and my instincts say the nightmare has made you on edge coupled with last night's slaying…" Kate trailed off as she closed the distance between them. "You don't have to deal with this now."

"What would have happened if B had killed me?" Faith mumbled as she cast her head down.

"Depends if the Sunnydale PD did a good job with the investigation," Kate said glancing towards the front door. "Also depends on Buffy's version of events. But if everything fit together and the trial ran smoothly then Buffy would be sitting in jail for murder."

"Ironic, huh?" Faith shook her head.

"Faith, I--" Kate's words stopped as the doorbell rang. They locked eyes for a moment before Kate drew the Slayer into a hug. "Whatever happens this weekend, know I'm here and the only justice I believe in is the kind that I wear a badge for. For humans that is."

Faith nodded then slipped out of the warm arms and swung the door open. Standing there was Buffy holding out a small cactus.

"House-warming gift," the blonde Slayer explained.

"Hey, B," Faith grinned forgetting about her dream. She enclosed herself in the blonde's arms, mindful of the cactus. Kate swiftly took the present out of harm's way then turned back to watch the Slayer reunion.

"This must be Alexia," Buffy said as the Golden Retriever nudged her way between her owner and the stranger. Her tail wagged frantically as Buffy squatted down and gave her an enthusiastic greeting. "She's adorable."

"We like to think so," Kate smiled as she ushered everyone into the apartment. Alexia stuck by her new friend hoping she would continue to be patted.

"Have a good trip down?" Faith asked as she and Kate settled on the couch together.

Buffy nodded and looked around the apartment. "Not what I expected."

"What did you expect?" Faith asked feeling Buffy's critical eye surveying the place.

"I don't know, something less homely," Buffy smiled. "Unless that's Kate's influence."

"It isn't," Kate offered. "When I moved in, we had to fight for space and not just in the closet. If it feels like a home, that's because Faith made it one."

"About time I had one, right?" Faith chuckled. "I'd give you a tour but there's not much to show you. Kitchen's in there," Faith pointed to her left, "and the bedroom and bathroom are down there," she finished pointing behind her.

They lapsed into a short silence as Buffy took in the living room and paid more attention to Alexia.

"How old is she?"

"Eleven months," Kate answered. "Thankfully she's nearly grown out of all her puppy behaviours."

"Except for pinching my stakes," Faith said giving the perpetrator an evil glare. Buffy laughed, and when Kate joined in the evil stare turned in her direction. "Go ahead and laugh, but one day I'm going to need a stake and all I can find is a chewed up and mangled piece of wood. You won't be laughing then."

"Wish I could have seen her when she was a puppy," Buffy sighed.

"Well, we have the next best thing," Kate stated brightly.

"And about a thousand of them," Faith said bringing out three photo albums from near the stereo. "Someone," Faith glanced over at Kate again, "went a little overboard with the camera."

"And someone was always telling me 'Kate you've got to get a picture of this.'"

Buffy opened the first album and instantly cooed at the tiny puppy on what was obviously the couch across from her.

"That was the first day," Faith explained excitedly. "Neither of us had any clue about what we were doing, but somehow we managed to feed her and get her to sleep without much fuss."

Buffy flipped to the next page and as Faith described the setting, Kate trundled into the kitchen to make some lunch. She could hear the Slayer's laughing and smiled to herself.

"This is when we first took her for a walk," Faith said looking at the photo of Alexia holding her own leash. "She was already so strong."

"You were afraid she'd break the lead," Kate said coming in with the food. "In fact, you were afraid of a lot of things you'd think she'd do."

"Well, I didn't want to lose her," Faith huffed. "How was I to know that when I let her off the lead she'd come back."

"As you can see, I was the one who trained her," Kate teased. "We were just lucky that Alex was easy to train. I read so many books on dog training and I'm glad we never had to use the problem section."

Buffy looked at their beaming faces, "Sounds like she's been a good addition to the household."

"Yep," Faith grinned contentedly. "These two are the best family a girl could ask for."

"Family, huh?" Buffy returned the grin. "Unconventional, but I can see it's working for you. Someone has done the impossible, you've been domesticated."

"Not quite," Kate said with a smile. "Tamed might be a better word. But we do things as a family."

"We even go on picnics," Faith unabashedly stated. "The first time we took her in the car, she loved it. Here, we have a picture of it," Faith said trying to find the photo.

"Why am I not surprised," Buffy chuckled.

********************

"What do you think?"

"This thing looks like it was made for you. How does Kate feel about it?" Buffy asked straddling the Suzuki Marauder and squirming until she was comfortable.

"She'd like me to drive the car more often, but secretly I think she likes having a sexy motorcycle-riding girlfriend. We go for a ride most weekends."

"Would you let me…" Buffy gripped the handles tighter and pretended to steer to the right.

"The way you drive!" Faith scoffed. "This is a thing of beauty, B and there's no way you are riding up front. However, if you want I'll take you for a spin."

"Really?" Buffy asked gleefully.

"Come on, I'll just grab the extra helmet."

After telling Kate where they were going, Faith instructed Buffy in the basics and they headed out towards the coast. Having taken the route dozens of times, Faith's mind wandered to the person sitting behind her. There was something different about Buffy since she'd returned from the dead. But not having the friendliest relationship with the other Slayer, she was reluctant to talk to Buffy about it.

She took them to her favourite stretch of beach that she frequented. Parking the bike, she gazed down at the sandy stretch that, over the last year, had become a place she felt safe. She took the lead, not saying anything to the other Slayer.

"What's wrong?" Buffy asked as they made their way down to the deserted shore.

Faith sat down on the dune and shook her head. "Just something that came up last night."

"About Kate?" Buffy asked sitting next to her. "I noticed her protecting her shoulder."

"Oh." Faith closed her eyes. "Nah, she injured that on the job. Needed stitches but nothing serious."

"Then what is it?"

"B…" Faith looked out at the Pacific. "I shouldn't bring it up."

"Is it about Angel?"

Faith shook her head and kept her eyes on the ocean. "We don't talk that much, B. Now that I have Kate and the Anderson's…it's like he has his gang and I have mine. Not much communication between us."

"Sounds familiar," Buffy said with a smile. "We've all gone our separate ways. Hard to believe I was once jealous of you spending time with him."

"We won't go into how jealous I was," Faith muttered. "He never had eyes for anyone but you, B. He went through hell when you were dead, from what I've heard."

They sat there in silence, Buffy watching Faith's changing expressions.

"Faith, just spit it out."

"First, I want you to know that I don't hate you."

"Why would you have a reason to hate me…oh," Buffy said and blew out a long breath.

"I don't, B. But last night I was reminded that I've missed eight months of my life being in that coma." Faith turned to the blonde Slayer. "Kate asked me if I was still angry with you and even though I have no right to…I lost eight months of my life B."

"You poisoned Angel," Buffy recalled quietly. "The only cure was the blood of a Slayer. It seemed like the perfect solution. Cure Angel and get you out of the way."

"As in dead," Faith snorted. "Did you really consider what coming after me would mean? That if you won you would have killed a human? As it is you committed a crime."

"I stopped more," Buffy accused.

Faith whipped her head around and stared out at the water again. "Sorry, that was Kate's cop influence talking. Part of me knows that if you hadn't put me in that coma then I would have continued on the same road. Trying to kill me may have been the best thing you ever did for me," Faith chuckled.

"I didn't think about the aftermath, Faith," Buffy reached out and put a hand on the brunette's shoulder. "Angel was dying and I couldn't stand by and watch that happen."

"But you chose to kill me, B. Chose to, not had to. Just like you chose to come here when you heard I tried to kill Angel. You wanted revenge."

"Wouldn't you?" Buffy asked raising her voice.

"If some bastard killed Kate, then yeah," Faith said softly. "Whoa, that was a nasty thought."

"I know I crossed the line…"

"I all but made you, B. Let's put the blame where it lies." Faith took the hand still on her shoulder and gave it a squeeze. "I wanted so much to prove my way was the best way. But now I understand…I had to be stopped."

"Even if I killed you?" Buffy asked shocked.

"Yes," Faith replied gravely.

"But I thought you were angry at me?"

"I understand you putting me out of commission, but it shouldn't have been about vengeance."

"Is that Kate talking through you again," Buffy said with a hint of a smile. Faith shrugged. "I wanted revenge for a long time. But when I saw you the first time after you'd been released from jail…" Buffy paused. "There was something different about you, you didn't have that do-or-die attitude and I think in that moment I forgave you."

"Why?"

"Because you'd done something not many people achieve. You changed and when you said sorry, you actually meant it. With my mother sick…"

"I hear ya," Faith said trying to stop her counterpart taking a trip down memory lane. "You know if you hadn't stabbed me then I wouldn't have had the coma. Wouldn't have woken up and fled to LA after I fought with you. So I wouldn't have gone to Angel and wanted to redeem myself. And in turn I would have never have met Kate. How is that for a twist of fate, huh?"

"So, what you're really saying is that you are thanking me for stabbing you?"

"Not quite." Faith mirrored Buffy's brief smile. "But you stopped me from killing and maybe I should be thanking you for that."

"Can't say you're welcome, but I'm glad that you didn't die."

"So you could beat a murder charge?" Faith challenged.

"It was a relief when your condition stabilised, I have to say, but seeing you now…makes me wonder if we gave up on you too soon."

"Blame Wesley for that," Faith said seriously. "The way I was back then, you did the best you could, B. Thank you for giving me a second chance."

"You're welcome," Buffy smiled. "What does Kate think about me trying to kill her lover?"

"We never talked about you being the one to put me in the coma. She knows, of course. I haven't seen her getting her handcuffs ready, so I'd say she's not out for vengeance or any regular justice. I think she understands that what you did was in pursuit of doing good."

"Doing good, I thought that's what I was doing by killing you," Buffy said softly.

"I'm just wicked happy that we can now talk things out rather than using our fists."

"Or knives," Buffy joked.

"Them too," Faith nodded. "I guess I just wanted to hear your side of the story. Eight months, B.

"When I found out that you weren't going to die, I washed my hands of it. That was wrong."

"Did you really forget me?"

"Not for months," Buffy said softly. "I worried about what would happen if you died. The others…even Giles never talked about it with me."

"Didn't want to accidently tip you over the edge?" Faith smirked.

"Or didn't want to admit I was capable of murder."

"Murder," Faith echoed with a snort. "Before Kate….god, before Kate my life was nothing. Everything I did turned to shit. I wasn't even worth being murdered. This is something that I need to work through, B, but I think I understand things better."

"It's those eight months. The time you spent, isn't it?"

"Yeah," Faith nodded. "But maybe that's the price I have to pay for what I did." She shrugged. "But the vendetta. You risked losing yourself the way I lost my way. That was wicked dangerous, B."

"Didn't think about it at the time."

"Thing about vengeance, it consumes you. Look at what Kate did after her father…" Faith shut her mouth aware that her lover guarded her privacy. "Almost cost Kate her career. I know I asked for it, taunted and baited you. But the whole thing about the Finch killing is you were so goddamned righteous about telling me I should act. The word hypocrite comes to mind. The one crime you can't accuse me of."

"Are you asking for an apology?"

Faith glanced at the hardened face. "Maybe. I don't know. All I know is that Graduation Eve wasn't all my doing. As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. You used your Slayer status as an excuse to try to kill me. Passed judgement on something that wasn't a demon. The very thing you accused me of."

After her tirade, Faith stood up and walked the few yards to the shore. She could feel Buffy's eyes on her as she walked on the damp sand and took in the salty air. She thought about what Kate may have been doing at that moment. She wished the cop's comforting presence was beside her, telling her that she had every right to go off at Buffy for what she did. She bent down and picked up a smooth wet pebble.

"Faith," Buffy said as she came up beside her. The blonde waited until Faith faced her before continuing. "I'm sorry."

"For what?" Faith asked as she turned back to the ocean and skimmed the pebbled across the water.

"For lots of things. Lying about Angel being alive. Not making you feel welcome." Buffy reached out and pulled on Faith's arm, gaining Faith's full attention. "But mostly for thinking I was above you. How did you put it once? 'Better-than-thou'? I don't agree with some of your beliefs about Slayers--"

"They've changed since then," Faith said crossing her arms.

Buffy continued, "--back then, but you're right. I became the very thing I thought you were. Not my finest hour. And I want to thank you."

"For what?"

"For bringing this up. It's about time I admitted what I did was wrong."

"Buffy admits she's wrong," Faith laughed. "Better late than never."

"Okay," Buffy winced at Faith's words. "I deserved that. So there, I said it. I'm sorry."

Faith studied the person in front of her and laughed. "Never thought the day would come when it was you standing here apologising. What's done is done. There's nothing to forgive. Come here."

Buffy slid into the brief hug and took a step back. "It can't be that easy."

"Buffy," Faith said and shook her head. "What you did, bar the personal reasons, saved my life if that makes any sense. I think about what would have happened if I hadn't had any downtime and…it scares me. So, while I can be angry about the amount of time I spent in a coma, the only reason I'm with Kate is because of it."

"Want an account of what happened in those eight months?" Buffy asked gently.

"If it involves sex with Riley, I don't think so."

"So, you don't want to hear about Parker?" Buffy retorted as they walked back to the dune.

"You mean Riley wasn't rebound guy?" Faith wiggled her eyebrows when Buffy shook her head. "Nah. It doesn't matter about what you guys were doing. Though there is one question you can answer for me."

"Yeah?" Buffy asked with trepidation.

Faith sat down and invited Buffy to do the same. Finally Faith took a deep breath and asked, "What's it like having a sister?"

"You have no idea," Buffy smiled.

"Especially when you know that she isn't…"

"But all my memories feel real. Don't you have memories of her?"

"Vaguely, but the real ones are stronger." Faith shrugged. "And for that I'm glad that I remember things exactly the way they happened."

"Maybe the monks thought it was more important for you to keep the original memories. Messing with them may have changed your perspective. Changed your willingness to redeem yourself."

"I don't know." Faith looked out to the ocean. "Still to know that she really isn't--"

"But she is. She's family, we share the same blood."

Faith nodded. "So we five by five with things?"

"You're the one who brought it up. Are you?"

"Yeah. I didn't know what I wanted from you, but what I got was wicked unexpected."

"Then we're five by five," Buffy smiled, then looked around the small cove. "You come here often?"

"Too often," Faith said digging her heels in the sand. "Kate doesn't need to know half of the things that go on in my mind. I come here to calm myself down. It works," Faith shrugged.

"Better than prowling for a fight."

"Or sleeping around." Faith shook her head, naming the other thing she used to do to settle her restlessness. "Wanna head back."

Buffy gestured that Faith go on without her as she walked back to the shore. Faith watched as the figure stood still, looking out at the ocean. She was struck by the loneliness Buffy radiated. She kept her eyes on the blonde Slayer until minutes later when Buffy turned to walk back to the motorcycle.

********************

Buffy leaned on the kitchen counter watching Kate slice some potatoes. Faith was busy setting up the pool table in the living room.

"Need some help?" Buffy asked noticing Kate having trouble with her shoulder.

"I've got it, thanks," Kate replied aware that Faith and the other Slayer had talked about the coma. When they arrived back, Faith had told her everything was 'five by five' while Buffy was in the bathroom. "It's nice that you can just be here. I know finding time to visit wasn't high on your list of priorities."

"Despite our history, Faith and I are both Slayers. I think it's good for us to at least connect on that level. We're almost family."

"Haven't thought about it like that," Kate said trying to keep her jealously from emerging. "But I suppose you share the same powers. Share dreams."

Reacting to the frown on the other woman's face, Buffy asked, "Is there something you want to say to me?"

"Worried I'm going to arrest you?" Kate remarked.

"No."

"Why not?" Kate asked sharply. "You tried to kill a human. If she had died you could have been charged with murder. As it is, I could probably make attempted murder stick."

"If you wanted to arrest me, would you be cooking me dinner?" Buffy asked calmly. "Never mind that you have known this for nearly a year."

"More than that," Kate corrected. "Faith all but gave it away when I asked about it after she was arrested. And you're right, I wouldn't arrest you. But not because I think you were justified in what you did, but because you have saved Sunnydale and the world more times than I want to know. This world needs their Slayers out there fighting."

"We talked about it, you know."

"Yeah, I know. How did it go?" Kate asked as she moved around the kitchen.

"I said I was sorry. She forgave me. We're both better for it and want to move on."

"Did she tell you about last night?" Kate glanced over and saw Buffy nod. "Thing is, she said it didn't bother her until now. I don't understand how she can go all this time pretending that it didn't happen."

"Guilt," Buffy murmured. "She said today that eight months was the price she had to pay. I forgot too, because I didn't want to pay any price for my actions."

"You never had to face the consequences," Kate reminded.

"Facing you is enough. If I'd killed Faith I'm sure things would have been different. But she almost too conveniently slipped into a coma and was still out for blood when she woke up."

"Made it easier for you to justify that you made the right call," Kate supplied.

"And I know now I didn't. Funny thing is, it took the very person I lectured on morals to remind me of my own failures to live up to them." Buffy helped Kate by passing over a knife. "You don't hate me, do you?"

"No. I don't have a right to judge you. I wasn't there. But I'm worried that in the future you might take the same actions believing you are right. I'm angry that no one around you ever sat you down and explained that Faith was a human not a demon. I'm depressed that only a coma saved you from taking responsibility. But I don't hate you and I don't want vengeance. If you want my forgiveness I can't give that to you either."

"I wasn't asking for it," Buffy commented.

"Good." Kate finished what she was doing and turned to face the Slayer. "Are the Sunnydale cops really that bad?"

"Some are yes. Maybe to be a Sunnydale cop you have to be," Buffy shrugged. "Then there are some that aren't incompetent just hampered by the belief that every crime is done by a human. But if you think about the unbelievable number of coincidences and weird ways people die, I think some of them have to know what's going on. The times I've seen them in action they haven't been too impressive, though."

"Had a few run-ins with them?" Kate asked with a smile.

"Comes with the job," Buffy rejoined. "Did Faith tell you about the time we broke into a sporting goods store?"

"Crashed a patrol car and escaped. Yeah she did," Kate commented. "Quite a trail Faith left when dealing with the police."

"Now she's dating one," Buffy quipped. She looked to Kate hoping her joke hadn't offended the cop.

"I can appreciate the irony. But at the same time I know it adds stability and structure to Faith's life. While I don't talk about my cases with her, I will sometimes talk to her about what I've dealt with. Show her that doing what's right does have its rewards."

"When I first heard about you two," Buffy broke off with a chuckle. "Faith falling in love was unbelievable, but to fall for someone in a position of authority. She's never been big on people telling her what to do."

"And yet she has let herself trust people with a lot of authority."

"A mayor and a cop," Buffy commented aloud. "Pretty high up the authority hierarchy."

"And she works for a man that exudes authority. Marcus Anderson is someone only a trained fighter would go up against. Yet Marcus wields his authority without macho posturing or resorting to physical threats. He has a good head and good instincts when it comes to the safety of himself and those around him."

"I was worried when Faith told me she was going into security," Buffy said softly. "To have that authority over people as well as demons…"

"It could have been a recipe for disaster," Kate finished the thought. "But guarding is just that, you don't provoke, in fact you do everything to prevent violence. Faith knows that. From what Marcus has told me, Faith has been required to use force only a handful of times. She doesn't go looking for it."

Buffy shook her head. "She used to be so gung-ho about everything. Charging in, not caring about the odds, the more the merrier. Every fight was a chance to get in some good blows, experience that rush."

"I honestly don't know what changed that," Kate shrugged. "The coma, jail…not sure. She still rushes in, but she's in control most of the time."

"Whatever, I know she's not the same Slayer she was in Sunnydale," Buffy remarked.

"Hey, B, check this out," Faith called from the living room.

"Thanks for understanding the situation," Buffy said softly as she slid past Kate. Kate acknowledged her words with a nod and checked on the dinner.

By the time the blonde Slayer left that evening, Faith and Buffy seemed to have moved beyond their earlier heated words. Kate was stacking the dishwasher when Faith leaned against the bench.

"I love you so much," she said once Kate closed the dishwasher.

Looking up and seeing tears in her eyes, Kate moved over and wrapped her in a loose embrace. "Did your talk with her help straighten out some of your feelings?"

"A little. But no matter how much I think about what came about because of my coma, it still gets me riled up," Faith spat out the words and Kate reacted by tightening her hold. "Things changed on me and I had no control over it. At least with jail, I was awake, I could make choices." She sighed and buried her head into Kate's good shoulder. "Then I think about my life without you in it and it all seems worth it. Buffy apologised for it, and while that's all I ever wanted at one point in my life, it seems empty."

"You've moved beyond needing an apology?" Kate asked letting go for a moment to drag a chair out. Faith sat down on the offered lap.

Faith shrugged. "Maybe."

"Well, if I can tell you what I think?" Faith gave her permission with a slight nod. "Your feelings about this didn't happen overnight, they've been hiding just under the surface for a long time. It's going to take some time to get to a point where you're comfortable with thinking about your coma. Today you've had an explanation and an apology and while it may seem trivial now, I think one day you are going to appreciate Buffy's words. Don't worry if you still feel the same tomorrow. Just know that your feelings are valid. And no matter what, I'm here for you."

"You know I love you, right?" Faith said with a soft smile. Their lips met for a few loving seconds. "Well, I've been out of my coma for nearly two years and waited this long to hear B's side. Maybe this is one for the journal."

"Might very well help," Kate said, agreeing with Faith's suggestion. Writing in a journal certainly had helped Faith deal with her feelings and guilt about Buffy's death.

"Then it looks like it's going to be a while until this goes away."

"But you have all the help you want."

"Oh, I want," Faith said giving Kate another kiss. She wanted more than kisses, but her lover wasn't feeling up to it, so she slowed down her overactive libido. They enjoyed their closeness for a few more minutes before Faith offered to do the dishes while Kate rested her sick body.

END PART 1

******************** CHAPTER TWO

The sun was setting on a warm Wednesday afternoon. The rider on the bike threaded her way through the traffic in a hurry. Minutes later the rider pulled into the driveway of the double storey house. Before the helmet came off, the front door opened and a caped figure ran across the garden.

"Hey, JD," Faith said brushing her hair back into place. She grinned at the Halloween costume her young friend had picked. "Or should I call you Batman?"

"JD will do," said the masked boy. The dark eyes that peeked through the mask studied Faith's dark attire. "What are you?"

"I," Faith said reaching back and pulling out a stake and a bottle of water, "am a Vampire Hunter."

"What's a Vampire Hunter?"

"A person that hunts vampires and protects children like you from big scary monsters," Faith supplied smirking at her private joke. "So no matter what scary things we run into tonight, I'll be there protecting you."

"Thank you, Faith," Barbara Anderson said from behind them. "Marcus still isn't sure he should be out trick-or-treating."

"I'll keep him safe," Faith stated seriously. "How hard can it be to take him around the block?"

"What's the water for?" Josh asked grabbing hold of it.

"It's Holy Water," Faith replied. "If you pour it over vampires it hurts them."

"Why?"

"Because it's blessed by God and vampires are evil," Faith explained. "Ready to go?"

"Yep," Josh said with a grin.

"I'll see you in about an hour then," Faith said to his mother.

"What time is Kate coming over?"

"Around seven. She just wanted to pop round to see Josh in his costume."

"She's over her cold then?"

Faith nodded before turning to her trick-or-treat partner. "Come on then, Batman. Too bad we don't have a Batmobile."

"I couldn't drive it anyway," Josh quipped as they made their way down the street.

"Yeah, but I could. How wicked cool would that be? So, where do you want to start?" Faith asked watching a trio of badly dressed ghosts walking on the opposite side of the road.

"Mrs Sharpe's," Josh replied. "I heard her say she was buying lots of candy."

"Let's go then, Batman," Faith rallied and they set off.

For the next hour they made their way around the block, collecting all sorts of treats. A parade of ghoulish and strangely dressed people passed them by. As a mummy walked towards them he growled. Josh gasped before Faith reassured him it was just a costume. If it were a real mummy she would be vanquishing it.

Kate's car sat in the drive as they approached the Anderson's laden with their spoils.

"Well, Batman," Faith said exhausted by the five-year old, "time to show off our hard-fought for treasure."

"Thanks Faith," Josh said while throwing his arms around his hero. "You got me the best candy."

"I did, didn't I." Faith revelled in her work. "All I ask is that you give at least one thing to your parents."

"Faith," he whined.

"One piece of candy. Who made your costume, huh?"

"Mom and Dad."

"Then it's only fair that they get something," Faith said surprising herself with the mother routine. "Come on, Kate's here."

Faith watched as Josh rushed up to the front door. By the time she walked into the house, Josh had already headed over to Kate to show off his Halloween costume.

"Hi baby," Faith said squeezing between the cop and Josh, and kissing her lightly on the lips.

"And what are you dressed as?" Kate asked as she eyed her lover up and down.

"A Vampire Hunter."

"And what exactly is that?" Kate teased, enjoying seeing her lover relaxed and happy.

"Someone who keeps the streets safe from monsters that like to scare little children." Faith turned to Josh. "I kept you safe, didn't I?"

"Yep. She saved me from a ghost and a wolf and a ginormous spider."

Marcus smiled at his son. "So you had a good time."

"Did we ever," Josh enthused. He opened his bag and showed everyone his stash. "Faith says I have to give you one. One," he emphasised holding up a single finger.

"Thank you," Barbara said picking out a wrapped candy bar. Marcus did the same under the watchful eye of his son.

"Kate, you can have two." Josh showed her two fingers.

"Thanks," Kate said smiling.

"And Faith can have five," Josh said after Kate had picked out hers.

"No thanks." Faith gave the boy a break. "You deserve the rest."

"Faith, you have to," the boy said pouting.

"Okay, I'll take one," Faith said and reached in to grab hold of a delicious jam-filled doughnut she had seen Josh take. "Thanks, Batman."

"You're the best, Faith," Josh said then he happily pulled out a candy and popped it into his mouth.

They moved into the living room, where Josh emptied his bag and laid out his treats. Barbara told him that he couldn't eat them all, so Faith helped him divide them up and put the rest back.

"How's the baby?" Kate asked sitting on the edge of a chair.

"Doing well, though this pregnancy has been a little harder than Josh's," Barbara remarked.

"Not long now," Marcus said with a smile.

"Hopefully before Christmas," Barbara said gently patting her bulging stomach. "The whole family's coming down and the last thing I want is them all hanging around in the hospital."

"Won't be a pretty picture," Marcus joked. He leaned over and took one of his wife's hands. "Not the way any child should be brought into the world."

"The two sides don't get along?" Faith asked her mind flashing to her mother. She wondered if her father was there at the birth.

"They do, but while the Anderson's tend to be a noisy bunch, Barbara's family is quieter unless talking about politics or sports."

"And they would all want a part in naming the poor baby. If they had their way we would end up with a Kelvin or a Florence." Barbara turned to her husband, "Or worse after my father. Then Marcus's father, who is still ticked off that Josh wasn't named after him, will make life difficult for everyone."

"I finally see the upside of not having any family," Faith joked, though inside she felt differently.

After an awkward silence Kate commented, "You have family."

"I know, but I meant blood relatives." Faith looked at her lover sadly. "People that share the same coloured hair, same eyes…Where strangers look at a group of us and immediately know."

"I know," Kate said seriously. She opened her mouth to say more, but Faith shook her head and motioned to her boss. Looking at her watch Kate said, "Unfortunately I have to go. My head is killing me after being chained to my desk all day."

"Still catching up?" Faith asked referring to the work Kate fell behind on when sick.

"Yeah." The cop stood up and smiled at Josh. "Love the costume."

"Thanks Kate," the boy answered shyly.

"Walk me to the door?"

The boy stood up, leaving his candy unattended for the first time.

"See you later?" Faith asked, wanting to spend more time with Josh.

"I'm thinking I'm just going to crash once I get home," Kate said wearily.

"Okay," Faith followed them to the front door.

"I want you to know how proud I am of you," Kate whispered in Faith's ear before placing a kiss on her lips.

"Proud?" Faith laughed. "For what?"

Kate took hold of her lover's hand and squeezed. "For being who you are. For not letting Josh down."

"Being good to Josh is easy." Faith looked down to the boy who was holding Kate's other hand. "Besides it's Halloween, the one night of the year I fit in with all the other freaks."

"You're not a freak," Kate said. "And definitely not like those freaks you fight."

"Okay, I see you're not going to let me brush off your pride, so I'll give in."

"Good. Just a thought, Faith, but only post-coma Faith would have done this for him. Without it--"

"I wouldn't have even known him," Faith nodded looking down fondly at the boy again.

"And he wouldn't have known you," Kate said. "Think of all the fun he would have missed out on."

"Yeah, yeah," Faith smiled and let go of Kate's hand. "You think you're so smart getting me to agree with you, but it's only because I want to."

"Yeah?" Kate challenged.

"Go on," Faith said nudging her. "I thought you were tired."

Kate brushed her lips over Faith's a couple of times before saying goodbye to Josh. The Slayer and the boy waved her goodbye then rejoined his parents.

"Hey," Faith said sitting back down, "don't forget that a certain cop has a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks."

"Already marked on the calendar," Barbara said.

"Really?" Faith asked smiling. "She's calendar worthy?"

Barbara nodded. "So what are you getting her?"

"Presents," Faith said with a wink. "But I can't tell you, just as I didn't tell anyone what I was getting you."

Josh's birthday was celebrated a few weeks ago with a party that both Faith and Kate attended. Faith didn't know how Barbara handled ten four and five year-olds running around, the woman was blessed with a cool temper and patience. Faith had scoured the toy section of the local department store finally settling on a couple of action figures, which he loved.

"Are we giving Kate a present?" Josh chimed in from his seat next to Faith.

"Yes, but I can't tell you what it is," Barbara replied with a grin.

"I won't tell, I promise."

Faith laughed at Josh's earnest face, "Well, this way you'll have a surprise too."

"Are you planning anything?" Marcus asked.

"No. I was hoping for a night in, if that's what Kate wants. It's on a work day, so there's not much time for a party."

Barbara smiled warmly at Faith. "Whatever you plan for her, I'm sure she'll love it."

"I sure hope so." Faith mentally ran down her list of possible gifts and nodded to herself, satisfied that Kate would be happy with them.

********************

Pocketing her phone after turning it off, Faith scanned the alley. In the darkness, her eyes couldn't make out the figure she knew was there. She looked up into the night sky, idly noticing the moon and stars. Staying still for several more seconds, when all she wanted to do was rush in, she let her mind wander to Kate. Ever since she'd pledged her fidelity to her lover, their relationship had changed. Faith felt closer to her, secure that they both wanted the same things. Kate seemed less worried about where she spent her time, too. Her almost indiscretion with Jay during the madness of Buffy's death was far behind them. Now she was committed to making their relationship work no matter what they faced.

Counting to ten, she pulled out a stake and slid along the cold concrete wall. As she pulled further into the alley, she picked up the sound of metal scraping against something. She halted. Above the fast beating of her heart, she couldn't pick up any other noise. Her feet started moving again, until she found an alcove. She listened again and heard two faint noises to her left. There were no streetlights providing any lighting, so her Slayer hearing was the only thing keeping her in the hunt.

From Faith's right she heard the distinct noise of a shotgun loading a cartridge. Her body froze, confused by this unexpected development. Footsteps started in her direction so she backed into small alcove. Whoever was holding the shotgun had less patience than her and walked down the alley right past her. The shape that passed Faith was tall and agile. Choking a breath of relief back, Faith waited and listened.

After what seemed like minutes of silence, she heard the faint noises return. It wasn't until the last moment she recognised they were footsteps. A body collided into hers as it sought the refuge of her alcove. Faith punched the body then readied her stake, hoping it was a demon.

Caution got the better of her as she hissed, "Who are you?"

"Please, help me get away from her," the shaky voice answered.

"Her? With the gun?"

"Please," the male voice begged

Faith leaned down and took hold of the first thing she felt. "You're a demon. Give me one reason why I shouldn't kill you myself."

"Because I know who she is."

"And she is?" Faith asked impatiently, hearing this 'she' coming down the alley. Knowing that she was running out of time. She pulled the demon to his feet and started running from the direction she'd entered. The demon followed her, babbling about this devil woman. They barely made it out of the alley and around the corner as a gunshot came from yards behind them. Faith pulled along the stumbling demon and raced along the dimly lit streets before finding a locked fence. She threw the demon over it, before leaping over herself. The devil woman couldn't be heard.

Faith turned around and looked at the demon. Skin was hanging off his face, not a feature that was natural to him, Faith surmised. "So, what did you do to piss her off?"

"Long story," the demon said, his confidence returning. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a cigarette.

"Yeah?" Faith asked seeing the glint of a blade tucked into his pants. "Why should I believe you?"

"Because what I did is nothing compared to her crimes." The demon puffed away on the cigarette. "So what now?"

"That's your problem," Faith snorted.

"So, what kind of demon are you?"

"Demon?" Faith asked pulling a face at the assumption. "I'm no demon. I don't know what she is, but you may have just jumped from the frying pan into the fire as the saying goes."

"You work for them too?"

"Them? If you mean the good powers that be, then yeah." Faith reached into her jacket and brought out a knife. "If you turn around, I'll make it quick."

"What?"

"I don't care what she is, but you've all but admitted to being a dangerous demon and in a stroke of unbelievably bad luck, my job happens to be about killing things like you."

"No," the demon said as his cigarette fell through his fingers.

"Yeah," Faith said with a gleam in her eye. "So it's either quick death or slow agony."

The demon decided making a run for it was his best chance, but he didn't get ten feet before, Faith was upon him and slashing his throat. Satisfied with her job, Faith wiped the blood off the blade, then reached down to take the demon's.

"That's mine."

Faith whipped around to find a tall woman standing a couple of feet away from her, shotgun hanging lazily from one hand. "The demon or the knife?"

Unfazed by Faith's nonchalance the woman walked up to her and swiped the demon's knife out of her hand. "The knife. Family heirloom."

"And you let this scum take it from you," Faith laughed, not seeing how this woman who looked like a trained soldier could have been bested by the demon lying at her feet.

"Hardly," the woman said with a brilliant smile. She opened her long leather jacket and put the knife into a loop inside. While this was going on Faith took the opportunity to study the woman. She was impossibly tall and wouldn't look out of place on a basketball court. While her clothes hid much of her body, the way she moved suggested that she trained as much as Faith did. A tattoo that Faith couldn't make out in the dark, ran from her neck and probably finished under her jacket. "Done staring?"

"So, who are you?" Faith asked walking towards the street. She casually jumped over the fence and watched as the woman did the same.

"If you're asking if I'm a demon, no."

Now in more light, Faith could make out the woman's features. In her promiscuous days Faith would have jumped this woman's bones without asking any questions, she was that hot. The Slayer figured she was in her late-twenties. Brown eyes locked with violet. "Human?"

"Human with a twist," the woman replied, hefting the shotgun over her shoulder. "And I'm guessing that's what you are too."

"Human with a twist," Faith repeated. "I like that."

"But I don't like you. Two years of hard work just went down the drain thanks to you. Maybe I should make you pay," the woman said harshly.

"Hey," Faith said just stopping herself from taking a step back. "I was only doing my job."

"And you stopped me from doing mine. I wanted and needed to avenge my family for his crime and you just took that away from me."

"Vengeance is overrated," Faith shrugged. "And for a knife?"

"A knife that made my family powerful."

"And just what is your family?" Faith asked with an air of sarcasm.

"Nothing for you to be concerned about."

"Two years? That's a long time to get back a knife."

"I been doing other things," the woman replied mysteriously. "But two years ago I was at the Hellmouth…you know--"

"Yeah, I know what you're talking about."

"I was there for an important event and while my attention was elsewhere this piece of shit got the jump on me."

"Then why didn't he sell it?" Faith asked realising that this woman was in Sunnydale during her coma.

"Because this knife is no ordinary knife. Only someone with the right knowledge knows how to use it. Without his knowledge the knife is worthless. He'd been on a long journey to find someone other than me who knew how, but fortunately for me, he wasn't Einstein. He came close a couple of times, but I've managed to distract him long enough to see that his contacts disappeared."

"You mentioned the Hellmouth? What's your business up there?" Faith asked finding a step to sit on. The woman dragged an empty crate over and sat down opposite her. They were alone in the night.

"What's it to you?" The woman placed the gun by her side, still with fingers curled around it.

"Used to be my old stomping ground," Faith explained finding it hard to tear her eyes away from this stranger.

"Every three years, my family meets up there," the woman shrugged.

"Yet you're human," Faith said. "Is there a reason I shouldn't stop you from leaving tonight?"

"Oh, you're a white hat," the woman laughed. "Hard to tell the way you killed that demon. I thought he might have pissed you off too."

Faith gave the woman a sneer. "You're a black hat then?"

"More like grey. Depends on my needs."

"You leave me with a situation, you know that? I can't kill you; you're human. Doesn't stop me from doing other damage, but... if you do some good every now and then…" Faith thought back on those who gave her a second chance. "I don't really want to fight you."

"Then don't," the woman said. "I don't kill humans either."

"How do I know you're telling the truth?" Faith asked torn between her duty and what her instincts were telling her.

"Because you'd be dead. You cheated me out of an honour I have thought about for two years, that is not something I take lightly. He wronged my family and I couldn't be a part of my family until I had avenged the situation."

"So, you didn't kill him." Faith shrugged. "The body is still there."

"I see I can't make you understand the importance my family places on this situation," the woman said sadly. "We are warriors. We have honour to uphold."

"Yeah, well, I'm sorry," Faith said feeling a sliver of sympathy for the woman. She stood up. "Time to be getting home."

"I'm sure we will meet again," the woman said standing up.

"You know something I don't?"

"Yes, I do," the woman stated.

"And?" Faith asked impatiently.

"And maybe some day you will find out," the woman said with a smirk.

"Can you at least tell me your name?"

"Kalinda."

"Faith," the Slayer returned and they shook hands. As Kalinda broke the contact, she picked up her gun and walked back down to the fence. Faith watched as she effortlessly jumped over it and presumably headed back for the demon's body. Shaking her head and conflicted about her feelings on the woman, Faith walked to the other side of the street and back into the LA nightlife.

********************

A glass of coke was placed on the table. Faith looked at it, her thoughts still on the woman she'd met an hour earlier.

"What are you thinking?" her new Watcher asked as she looked at Faith from across the table. In front of her was a journal open and waiting for Faith to give her fortnightly update.

"I met this woman tonight," Faith began, her eyes focussing on the table, "and I can't work out why I'm so…intrigued by her."

"Tell me," Jacinta asked.

Faith took a sip of coke then launched into an abbreviated version of the night's events. When she'd finished she gulped down the rest of her drink.

"This Kalinda, are you sure she was human?" Jacinta asked looking up from her notes.

"Not positive," Faith said trying to think back on the night's encounter. "But demons don't normally have a code about not killing humans."

"Why are you so interested in her?"

"I don't know…it's like she had this power, an ability to draw people to her. Sexy as hell, too. Not that I was thinking about that, but I get the feeling she wouldn't have trouble getting a date or a fuck."

"And she gave no indication about her business at the Hellmouth?"

"Maybe some ritual. For this demon to get away with the knife, she'd have to be wicked distracted."

"Okay, well, I'm going to see if I can find out more about her," Jacinta said writing something down.

"So did I do the right thing? Letting her go." Faith fiddled with the glass not daring to look at her Watcher.

"Yes," Jacinta said nodding. "Caution was the right approach here. Until we find out more about her, I would advise not engaging her in any battles if you can help it."

"Yeah, but someone like that, not really jail material."

"You were," Jacinta said gently.

"I cooperated, big difference. If I didn't know there were only two Slayers, I'd swear she was one." Faith turned her head away for a moment as two thoughts crossed her mind.

"What?" Jacinta asked.

"She can't be a Slayer, right?" Faith watched as Jacinta failed to see where her thoughts were going. "With Buffy dying…"

"From what I understand that didn't make any difference. The line goes through you."

"And my coma…"

"You didn't die."

"Maybe I did. All it took was a minute or two for Kendra to be called. Maybe I flat-lined while they were fixing me up." Faith started panicking. "Maybe--"

"Faith." Jacinta held up her hand. "You didn't die."

"How do you know?" she asked harshly.

"The Council investigated what happened to you from the time you entered the hospital. You did not die before you slipped into your coma. We exhausted all information we had in order to make sure."

"Right, so you could find a new Slayer if there was one," Faith nodded.

"Kalinda is not a Slayer." Jacinta closed her journal and looked up at her charge. "How are things going in general?"

"Wicked good," Faith said smiling at the change of subject. "After the rocky road Kate and I travelled when B was dead, we've gotten back on track. Except we're closer than ever before. Every night when I go home, I look forward to seeing her and I can tell she feels like that too. Our sex--" Faith stopped and smiled. "In another dimension. I thought two people couldn't be as close as we were before, but instead of being bored, I look forward to exploring new things with her. I can hardly keep my hands off her, even more than before. And I couldn't imagine sleeping apart, I don't know how I'd go to sleep without hearing her breathing next to me." Faith suddenly realised what she'd said and whom she'd said it to. "Sorry, I know that's not what you were asking."

"That's quite alright," Jacinta said warmly. "Sounds like both of you are more comfortable with trusting each other."

Faith looked up at Jacinta pondering her words before nodding. "Yeah, now that you mention it. I never knew why people went to the trouble of getting married, but I think I do now. It's about commitment." Faith stopped and laughed at her own words. "Shit, I can't believe all the wicked corny things I say these days."

"It suits you," Jacinta smiled. "And you're right. Marriage to a lot of people is a public declaration of a deep and meaningful commitment. Sometimes it's more about family expectations, but all you have to do is look at the vows to know that two people are placing their utmost trust in the each other."

"Sometimes it feels like that. Yet, I always thought once you get married that's it, downhill from there. But Kate is always surprising me and I'm still learning so much about her. I don't see how I could be bored with her." Faith smiled at a few memories her mind threw at her.

"I'm happy for you," Jacinta said. "Many people never find what you have."

"Yeah," Faith nodded thinking about her first Watcher, Emily, and felt a tear come to her eye. "But enough of that. I suppose you want to an account of what I've been doing Slayer wise for the last two weeks."

"Go ahead," Jacinta invited reopening her journal.

END PART 2

******************** CHAPTER THREE

After yawning and stretching, Kate opened her eyes to be blinded by the late autumn sun shining into the bedroom. Her hand reached out but found empty air where her lover slept. The mattress was still warm. Disappointed that Faith wasn't there to see her wake on this important day, she closed her eyes again and hoped that when they opened her lover would be there.

She heard the bathroom door open and her eyes watched as a towel-covered Slayer made her way into the bedroom and onto the bed.

"Happy birthday," Faith greeted before straddling Kate's torso and bending down for a gentle kiss. Kate reached a hand up and pulled the lips further into hers. When they finally broke apart Faith brushed her thumb gently over Kate's cheek and declared, "I love you, Kate."

"I love you too, but I'd love you more naked," Kate growled trying to pull off the towel.

"Kate," Faith said with some regret, "I'd love to, but the things I want to do to you will take more time than we have."

Kate pouted, "Quickie?"

"Well you have a choice. Quickie or a present, because I don't have time for both." Marcus needed her this morning and it was too important for Faith to be late.

"We're doing both." Kate demanded, feeling unfairly punished because they had to work.

"I'll try my hardest," Faith chuckled and felt the towel fall off her.

Kate took off the T-shirt she had worn to bed and brought Faith down to her lips again. Already aroused, she guided one of Faith's hands down to her thigh and the other to her breast.

"Look at me," Faith commanded as her fingers started to build a rhythm. Kate's eyes took a couple of seconds to find their mark. "Talk to me, baby."

Kate tried to, but Faith's talented fingers stole away her ability to put more than a couple of words together at a time. Faith groaned, feeling Kate clutch at her questing fingers.

"Oh yeah," Kate moaned, "harder."

Faith obliged, quickening the strokes over the sensitive nub. Her lover's scent filled the air as Kate's climax overpowered her. She kept her eyes locked on Kate's, as she helped her ride out the deep shudders.

"Happy birthday, baby," Faith breathed out gathering her recovering lover in her arms. "That gives new meaning to quickie."

"I was ready," Kate breathed out, moving a strand a hair away from her face.

"That's an understatement," Faith teased trailing a finger down Kate's neck, moving more hair away from the damp skin. "I love being with you."

"Me too," Kate managed before sitting up. "Thank you."

"No, thank you," Faith teased knowing she sounded whipped. "You are the only person that makes me feel good no matter whether I'm giving or receiving. Seeing you receiving so much pleasure it's like…nothing I've ever felt before."

"Do you need anything?" Kate asked taking hold of Faith's hand and caressing it.

"Tonight," Faith replied feeling the tension of her own arousal still surging through her. "But this is your time. Wait here."

"Give me a minute or two," Kate said as she took off to the bathroom for a quick shower.

When she re-emerged in the bedroom, Faith was dressed in pants and a bra and picking out a top. Kate moved to her side of the closet and started dressing for her day. When she'd finished Faith was sitting on the bed with her arms behind her back.

Seeing the look of desire cross over her lover's face she slowly made her way over smiling. "You have something for me?"

"Here," Faith said whipping out a small wrapped box from behind her back.

Kate sat down next to her and tore off the paper. She brought out the box and flipped the lid to reveal a pair of earrings.

"Small, I know, but that's just the first present," Faith said waiting for Kate's approval.

"These are beautiful," Kate said looking at down at the stone capped studs. Simple in design, yet significant because they were almost the exact colour of her eyes. "I'm going to wear them now."

"Here," Faith said taking one and handing it to her lover. Kate swapped the gift for the current earrings she was wearing. They repeated the process with the other one before Kate went to the mirror and checked out her reflection.

"Thank you," Kate said taking Faith's hand and moving them into the kitchen. Alexia, who had been quiet up until then, came and made a fuss of her owners.

"Sorry Alex," Faith said bending down to the hopeful canine. "Mommy has to go to work. We'll go out later."

They settled into their morning routine, efficiently eating breakfast and preparing themselves for their work days. As Faith grabbed her car keys and picked up her cell phone from the bedside table, she glanced at Kate who was looking for her watch.

"I'll be home about five, if all goes well. You?"

"Normal time," Kate said finally finding her watch and strapping it on. "Crossing my fingers."

"Tonight then," Faith winked and wrapped her arms around Kate in a tight embrace. After placing several long kisses on her lips she pulled back. "I'll be thinking about you all day."

"So will I," Kate said and before Faith drew away she pulled her back in for another round of kisses. "Love you."

"Ditto, babe," Faith teased and winked. "Have a good day."

********************

Rubbing her eyes, Kate looked up at the clock counting down the minutes until she could leave work.

"Hey Lockley."

Her partner called her over to a group of officers gathering around a desk. She stood up and noticed a light flickering from the table. Raising an eyebrow at Detective Gregan, she walked over. The gathered group managed to belt out a decent chorus of 'Happy Birthday'. Gregan encouraged her to make a wish by blowing out the candles on the chocolate cake. When she'd accomplished her task with one breath, cheering erupted.

"Happy birthday," Detective Gregan said handing her a knife.

"Thank you," Kate answered shyly. "Thank you, everyone."

The crowd accepted their cake from the blonde detective while exchanging niceties with her. After the group had dispersed, Kate looked up at the two remaining Detectives at her side. Gregan and Broomfield were engaged in a discussion about a recent case.

"Wait," Gregan said as Kate turned to go back to her desk. "We were wondering if you'd accept an invitation to have a drink with us later."

"I'd love to, but I already have plans tonight," Kate said smiling in anticipation of the evening to come. "Can I take a raincheck?"

"Sure," Broomfield answered.

"What have you and Faith got planned?" Gregan asked wrapping up the rest of the cake and handing it to her.

"Quiet night in," Kate answered shyly. After years of worrying about what the police force would think if they found out she was having a lesbian relationship, Gregan's acceptance of her still stunned her at times.

"What did she get you?"

"These earrings," Kate answered not holding back her grin. It had been a long time since she could show off her status as a taken woman. "And promise of something else bigger than these."

"You are one lucky woman, having a girl like that," Gregan said with a teasing smile.

"You met her?" Broomfield asked.

"Yeah, a couple of weeks back when Kate was injured. If you don't mind me saying so, that woman is hot."

"How hot?" Broomfield asked with a mischievous smile.

"She sizzles," Gregan chuckled. "If she weren't--"

"And you weren't," Kate cut in giving her partner a smile.

"Is she…you know…"

"Gay? Wouldn't you like to know," Kate said shaking her head with a smile. "Faith defies labels, she just is," she added then looked at the time. "I'm going to finish up for the day. Thank you, I appreciate the thought."

"My pleasure," Gregan said as Kate started back to her desk with the cake in hand. As she sat down, she heard Gregan and Broomfield talking about Faith. Once upon a time gossip like that would have her ready to punch the offender. These days she was more relaxed about the office rumour mill and knew that she had a good working relationship with her fellow detectives. She turned back to work letting them have their fun.

********************

Faith wiped the sweat from her eyes and looked down at Alexia who was running along side her. She'd pushed herself hard, the memory of the coma still haunting her at times. Though she had been writing in the journal, the pain of those missing months plagued her. Buffy's apology had helped heal part of her anger towards the other Slayer's vendetta, but…she was still missing something. She shook her head, wanting to forget about her problems for the night. This was Kate's day.

"Where's Kate?" Faith asked the dog as they jogged up to the apartment. Alexia started wagging her tail and looking around. "Inside," Faith said as if the canine would understand. "Come on, let's see how her birthday has gone so far."

Faith took the collar off Alexia and opened the door for her. The Golden Retriever ran into the apartment looking for her owner. Faith smiled as Alexia disappeared into the bedroom where she heard a giggle. She strolled over to find Alexia madly wagging her tail and pushing herself into Kate for a hug.

"Hey," she greeted from the doorway. Kate looked up at her while she finished patting the Golden Retriever. Faith mirrored the grin on Kate's face. "Good day?"

"Except for having to work, yeah," Kate replied watching Alexia move out of the bedroom. "But I have birthday cake from the guys at work."

"Wicked cool," Faith said unable to stand the distance between them. She pulled Kate into her arms and scraped her lips over Kate's. "Did they sing?"

"Yeah," Kate replied laughing.

Faith reached up and tucked a strand of blonde hair behind Kate's ear. Then her fingers cupped a cheek. "I'm the luckiest girl alive."

Kate laid her hand on Faith's and studied the brown eyes looking into hers. "What's going through that mind of yours?"

"This is the first time I've felt so much joy celebrating someone else's birthday. And I get to show you how much I love you. After what I've done…to feel this wicked happy is almost a crime."

"You mean after rescuing countless people and saving the world you're not allowed to feel happy?" Kate asked sitting them down on the bed.

Faith shook her head dismissing the comment. "Anyways, I know we didn't plan anything for today, but whatever you want, you've got."

"I've already got what I want," Kate remarked and squeezed their entwined hands. "I'd be happy if the rest of the day consisted of you being less than ten feet away, preferably less than an inch."

"Consider it done."

"Want to go out?" Kate asked looking at the time.

"Do you?"

Kate shook her head, "No."

"Then how about we order some take-out and you can open the rest of your presents," Faith suggested looking to her girlfriend for approval.

"I'm in the mood for Chinese," the birthday girl replied making a move into the kitchen and dialling their favourite Chinese place. As she was punching in the numbers, Faith's cell rang. Kate watched as Faith moved into the bedroom while she placed the order. When she'd put the menu back in its spot she noticed Faith sitting on the couch with a pile of presents waiting for her.

"What happened to having one present?" Kate asked looking at her array of gifts.

Faith smirked, "One present is boring. Who says that you give one present? And you never told me what you wanted, so I had to make sure I hit the mark somehow. Besides, you are so worth it."

"And next month you are going to be going crazy wondering what to get me for Christmas, having used up all your ideas," Kate teased marvelling for the thousandth time how Faith had changed.

"The Anderson's are coming around about eight," Faith said casually, watching Alexia settle at her feet. She reached down and absently stroked the thick fur.

"Your idea?" Kate smiled.

"Not really, when I reminded Barbara, she had already taken care of it." Faith looked at the presents she'd painstakingly wrapped. "Now, you going to rip open my handy work or what?"

"Where to start," Kate pondered and chose a heavy square package. She removed the paper, finding three books inside. David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and Pickwick Papers -- all Charles Dickens novels. Kate chuckled, "These are going to keep me going for a long time." Referring to the length of Dickens' works.

"I know A Tale of Two Cities is one of your favourites," Faith said having noticed the worn spine of the book several times. "And I never knew he wrote Oliver Twist."

"You probably think of it as a musical," Kate said thinking about the movie version that was so popular.

"I might even have a go at it," Faith said then faltered, "that is if you don't mind."

"You might find it a bit heavy," Kate said, "but I'm sure you will enjoy it." Putting the books to one side, she reached over. "Thank you." A couple of kisses later she moved the gift wrap aside and picked up an elongated cylinder shaped package. Curious and not having a clue what it held, she undid the top of it and slid it out. "It's a…" She trailed off slightly embarrassed.

"A vibrator," Faith smirked. "I'm not making a statement about the quality of our sex life, but I know you sometimes need extra stimulation."

"You know, I hate to say this," Kate glanced down shyly, "but this is one of the most thoughtful things someone has given me."

Faith laughed. "And I won't be insulted if you want to use it while I'm not here. Or even when I'm in the same room. Anything as long as you are getting your quota of orgasms."

"I think I'm already at my quota," Kate said raising her eyebrows at her lover, "but I bet I can find a use for it." She put it down before she was tempted to test out the batteries and it led to something that she didn't want the Anderson's to interrupt.

"I got extra batteries," Faith teased, "I put them in your bedside table."

"Always thinking about sex, aren't you."

"Always thinking about having sex with you," she said with a growl. Kate held her back as she attempted to straddle her. "Dinner will be here any minute." Faith backed down but not before taking a nibble at a soft earlobe. Kate reached out for a rectangular box. After opening the gift wrap she found a cardboard box claiming that the keyboard inside had enhanced function keys and extra comfort for the wrists. She undid the tape holding it together and took out the shiny new board.

"I know for a fact that your keyboard is wicked dirty," Faith said as way of explanation. "Believe me, some of those keys are sticky and won't come clean. I only play games on it, I don't know how you can type."

"I always wanted one with Internet buttons on it," Kate smiled.

"So I hit the mark?" Faith asked with a quiet desperation.

"Bullseye three times. Last one," she said picking up the last gift. She rattled it and turned to Faith. "I bet there are chocolates inside."

"Can't miss out on the gift for all occasions," Faith remarked as Kate licked her lips at the sight of her favourite chocolate selection. "I hope the keyboard is okay. I had to make sure I got the right one for the computer. Never knew that you could have them cordless."

Kate grinned. "Next you'll be telling me you used the computer yourself for something other than games."

"No way," Faith said holding up her hands in surrender. "I ain't going to mess with that, not after hearing you swear at it with language you normally reserve for serial killers. Not me."

"At least I don't have to worry about you downloading porn," Kate teased.

"I don't need to look at artificial breasts, yours are hotter and all natural. And I should know, I've explored every part of them a hundred times." Faith waggled her eyebrows as she perused the body part in question. When a pink tongue came out and licked her lips, Kate waved her hand in front of the devouring eyes.

"Later." It was a promise.

Faith hadn't stopped staring at her, but she swallowed and nodded. Then emitted a long groan, "But I want you now."

"And you want to be caught by your boss and Josh?" Kate asked. Faith's eyes lit up thinking about the thrill of knowing they could be caught. "I didn't mean that as a challenge."

"Later," Faith said resigned.

"Doesn't stop me from thanking you, though," Kate said reaching over and pulling the warm body towards her. Their lips met in a kiss that Kate deliberately kept light. But Faith wouldn't let her get away that easy and managed to persuade her lover to open her mouth so her tongue could do some exploring. Some minutes later Faith gently tugged on the cop's bottom lip before withdrawing.

When Faith had her breath back and her arousal under control she whispered, "You drive me crazy, you know that."

"That's my mission in life."

"Wicked cool mission," she replied with a laugh. "Happy birthday, baby."

"Love you too," Kate answered. She turned to the table and surveyed her presents. "Better move the vibrator, don't you think."

Faith took her arm off Kate and picked it up, "Yeah. Apart from Marcus and Barbara learning too much about what we do, Josh is not ready to learn that such wicked hot things exist."

As she was clearing the presents away, the deliveryman came with their dinner. Faith made sure she got there before her lover did to pay for it. As they ate, Kate gave her a longer version of her day.

"So you brought cake home?" Faith asked as she polished off the last of her rice.

"On the bench," the blonde replied, "and leave some for me." She had to chuckle when Faith came back with the thinnest slice she could cut. "Go back and get yourself some more."

The Slayer faithfully did as she was instructed and came back with a good sized piece. Taking a bite she closed her eyes in pleasure. "This is wicked tasty. Who made it?"

"One of the guys wives. Very nice woman. Met her a couple of times."

"You meet other Detective's partners?" Faith asked curious.

"Not very often," Kate quickly said not wanting the Slayer to think she was hiding her from prying eyes. "At a couple of formal occasions and sometimes they come down to the precinct for various reasons. But I know a few of them from talking to them on the phone."

"Checking to make sure their men are okay?"

"Sometimes. Other than that, it's just everyday things that they need to talk about. A couple of the guys have kids." Kate thought about Gregan's comment earlier that day. "And the one person who has met you, is very impressed."

"Impressed how?" Faith asked frowning.

Kate turned slightly red as she replied, "He thinks you are hot."

Faith burst out laughing. "Gregan is jealous of you."

"He has a girlfriend," Kate defended, not comfortable with the idea Robbie desired her lover.

"So what did you say to that?"

"Reminded him about the fact that he is taken," Kate grinned. "But thanks to him, our relationship is the latest gossip going around the precinct."

"Does that bother you?" Faith asked gently.

The blonde shook her head, "At one time it would, but Gregan's support of my relationship with you has helped the others accept me. And the fact that you're hot only adds to the acceptance. Unfortunate that it works like that, but true."

"Here." Faith leaned over with a finger stacked with icing.

"You're trying to tempt me," Kate said with disapproval. But she opened her mouth, poked out her tongue and licked the icing off the finger. She drew the finger into the warm cavern of her mouth while her tongue cleaned the remnants of the icing. When she finally let Faith have her finger back she said with a smug look, "Turnabout, Slayer, turnabout."

Faith looked at her finger then at the mouth it had been in, before throwing her head back and letting out a loud groan. "Give me strength," she whispered.

"You don't need strength, you need some self-control. Might be good for you."

"I have self-control," Faith defended becoming angry at the accusation. "Otherwise I would be out there humping the first person I see after a slay. Instead I wait until I get back here and let loose only if you are in the mood."

Seeing she'd hurt her, Kate reached over and touched the leather-clad knee. "I'm sorry. I know how hard you work to keep your promise of fidelity to me. I treasure the trust I have in you."

Faith turned away, her eyes close to tears. "Waiting to get home isn't all that hard. Not when I know that you move me in ways a stranger never could. That's one of the best things about being with you…I may have to wait a little longer, but it is worth it."

"I know," Kate said gently. "And I love you for what you do. I can't imagine how it is for you to get horny just doing your job. There's a rush when I start fitting the pieces together on a case, but it's more intellectual than physical. And the physical side of my job is the part I hate the most."

"But you go slaying with me."

"Not for the rush. And most demons don't have guns, so I have an advantage if I keep my distance. But criminals…they have access to heavy firepower and sometimes that plays on my mind. Police issue guns can't beat an Uzi. When was the last time you had a cloak and dagger shoot out with a demon?"

"Can't think of a time," Faith said. "So you never get the same blood rush I do?"

"You know I do," Kate teased, thinking back on several occasions she was just as horny as her lover. "But most of the time it's not sexual. I feel this high, but like the high that many people get from exercise."

"Endorphins," Faith said casually.

"But with you, everything is heightened, including my arousal. So don't worry about me wanting to get sweaty with another detective." Kate slid her hand up from the knee to a solid thigh. "I love you just the way you are. You know that, don't you?"

Looking into the remorseful blue eyes, Faith nodded. "I'm wicked touchy on the fidelity subject."

"You have all the self-control you need," Kate murmured. "And that's the way I like it. Knowing that when you come home you will be there for me, if I need you. I'm not playing the dutiful wife, Faith, I look forward to finding out what mood you're in when you come home. And every time it's different. You don't come home and demand I be ready for you. You cater to my needs too. If I need foreplay you make time for that."

"Something tells me we won't be needing much of that tonight," the Slayer said with a smirk. She offered Kate the rest of the cake on her plate, feeding it to her but without the seduction that would have gone on if they weren't expecting company.

The last note of 'Happy Birthday hung in the air, before Kate was nudged in the shoulder by Faith.

"Go on, make a wish," she encouraged moving away slightly. Josh, Barbara and Marcus surrounded the second cake of the day urging the cop on.

Kate leaned forward and blew out the handful of candles on the sponge cake Barbara had made.

"How old are you?" Josh asked as the last candle went out in a puff of smoke.

"Josh, never ask a woman her age," Marcus said with a chuckle.

"It's alright," Kate smiled. "I'm young enough not to care, although sometimes I feel too old to keep up with her."

"It doesn't matter," Faith reassured her by murmuring in her ear. "It's one of the things that make us work so well."

Barbara handed the birthday girl a knife and she efficiently cut the cake. The group went into the living room where the Anderson's had already given her an ergonomic desk chair. Complete with adjustable arms, back and height it was an excellent replacement for the rickety old chair that had seen better days.

Not having spent much time with the Anderson's lately, Kate turned her attention to Marcus. "So how's the business going?"

"Good. There's steady work around from about ten companies, plus the individuals that only need our services on the odd occasion. The only problem is that I'm not doing any of the detail myself," he chuckled. "I thought when I set this up that once it was running smoothly I could do some of the security work. But with the amount of customers and people on my books, I always find enough work to do in the office. I'm just glad I took a course in business before I did this otherwise I'd be a mess by now. And my accountant is making a fortune off me."

"You should go out with us sometime, Boss," Faith said. "We have that convention later this week. You can be a parking valet."

"A valet?" Kate asked surprised. Though they talked about Faith's day job, she didn't know everything she did. "This is what you do all day."

"Nah," Faith shook her head. "This convention centre is one of our regulars. You know wicked rich events where we provide security in and out, but do valet as well. I did it once and although I got to drive a Jaguar, I hated it. The number of times I was lectured on how to drive…you know how I hate to be told what to do."

"I'll think about it," Marcus said stroking his chin.

"Come on," Faith said with a smirk, "driving wicked hot cars for a day or sitting chained to the desk? There's no competition."

While Marcus told them about one of his competitors losing a BMW at a function, Josh yawned and walked over to where Faith was sitting on the couch. He gazed at her with a hopeful look.

"Okay, JD," she said and helped him settle on her lap. He moulded himself to her then dropped his head on her chest. "Comfortable?"

"Yep," he said before closing his eyes and luxuriating in his hero's arms.

A half-hour later he was still curled up when Barbara announced they should be going. As Barbara helped Faith settle Josh into the car, Marcus hung back.

"Thank you for this," Kate said piling the dirty plates. "Although I didn't expect a present."

"Why not?" Marcus asked.

Kate shrugged, "Without Faith, we wouldn't be friends."

"That's mostly true," Marcus replied sitting down next to her. "But you are just as important as she is. Both of you are important to us. Yes, Faith is the one we're closest to, but that's only because we've spent more time with her and yes it might seem like Faith is the centre of attention, but that's just Faith being herself. You are a great friend, Kate, and Barbara and I treasure your friendship. We didn't ask you to be our baby's godparent as an extension of asking Faith. If Faith had truly rejected the offer, we still would have wanted you." He stopped and looked at her warmly. "We met five years ago, right?"

"Yeah, I was still on the beat."

"And while we never kept in touch, I still respected you and considered you someone I trusted. That's why I approached you last year, wanting to see if you'd change careers and join me. I only took a good look at Faith because you vouched for her. Without that, I doubt I would have taken on someone straight out of jail, no matter how I feel about giving people second chances." Marcus watched the woman beside him. "Over the last year, I've come to think of you not just as a friend but as part of this big extended family I seem to keep collecting. While Faith may be the noisier of you two, your largely silent support and encouragement of my family and Faith is something I've come to depend on. You would be the first person I called if I was ever in trouble. My relatives, though I love them, are never ones to be calm in a crisis. And that's why I want my child to have you as a godparent. Because I know that I would be able to count on you."

Kate looked down shyly, "Thanks."

"So, when we knew your birthday was coming up, there was no hesitation in putting some thought into getting you a gift. I wouldn't have it any other way. So, yes without Faith we wouldn't have had this opportunity, but she is not the only reason we are friends," Marcus finished with a smile.

"Now I see what Faith means when you get emotional. You just go for it don't you," Kate said trying to lighten the mood before she went down the same road.

"My family mean everything to me," Marcus said seriously. "The business could go under and it wouldn't destroy me if I still had my family. I've told Faith she is part of my family, and I'm sorry I've neglected to tell you the same. You are part of my family, Katie." He reached over and gave her a brief hug.

"Thank you," Kate said unable to say much else. "That means so much to me."

"So don't go thinking it's only Faith we love to see. You should visit more often, and not just with Faith. You are welcome any time, Faith or no Faith," Marcus said with a grin.

Faith found them a minute later sitting in silence, "What's going on?"

"Just giving Kate the official welcome to the family," Marcus grinned as he stood. "I suppose Barbara's wondering where I am."

"Yeah, we were starting to think that you were giving my girl some very private birthday kisses," Faith teased.

Marcus and Kate looked at each other before laughing. "The chances of that happening are absolutely zero," Kate said through her laughter.

She felt herself being wrapped in strong arms that were not familiar. She leaned into the big man, soaking up his warmth. After he released her from the powerful hug, he gave them a smile, then disappeared through the door without another word.

"What was that about?" Faith asked closing the door behind him. "You've had one of those emotional talks with him, haven't you?"

Kate nodded, allowing a couple of tears to pool in her eyes now the big man was gone. "I always thought that you were the reason we were friends, but--"

"Gee, Kate, don't you know they think the world of you? And they happen to have wicked excellent taste, I must say. They respect you so much." Faith took a seat next to her. "Being with you is one of the reasons they think I'm five by five."

"Never knew," Kate said finding an arm around her shoulders.

"Well now you do."

"Yeah," Kate said closing her eyes.

When she opened them again she found dark seductive eyes staring back at her. She stared at them for a few moments, knowing that they were waiting for her to make the first move. Enjoying the moment, she felt her heart start beating faster and her body start rousing itself for the night ahead. The dark eyes slipped their line of sight down and Kate watched as a tongue wet dry lips.

The blonde slowly moved her hands to her shirt and slipped the top button through the hole. Another pair of hands immediately reached for the next button, but Kate stopped the action. "You said earlier you wouldn't mind watching."

As Faith let out a strangled moan, nimble fingers undid the next three buttons. Kate stopped herself from grinning when the Slayer turned front-on to her and leaned forward for a better look at the white bra now showing. Just for fun, she let her left index finger trail down from her collarbone over the swell of breast to the edge of her bra. A hand shot out only to be battered away before it reached her breast.

"No touching until I say so," Kate said shaking her finger at her lover's indiscretion.

Shakily Faith moaned, "I can't. I need to touch you, baby."

"And you can, but later," Kate replied enjoying turning the tables. Slow torture was one of Faith's specialities, always wanting to draw as much out of her as possible and stretch her limits.

The blonde cop stood and after making sure the dark eyes hadn't wavered, she undid the last buttons and drew the shirt off her. It landed on the floor, but neither saw where. Kate moved her torso in a little dance, watching Faith follow her every movement. She held out her hand and in the blink of an eye she was leading a willing Slayer into the bedroom. She gently pushed the Slayer to the bed and had her sit on the edge. She stood over her, straddling Faith's legs, careful not to touch any part of her lover. Faith's hands reached out and cupped her ass, squeezing in a rhythm that had Kate forget what she was doing for a moment.

"Hands off," she commanded. A defiant look passed over Faith's face before she complied, but not before having one last squeeze.

"Come on, baby, I can tell you're ready," Faith complained, noticing the room filling with their scents.

"You can take my bra off," Kate gave in and thrust her chest out inches away from her lover's talented mouth.

"Finally," Faith said quickly baring the soft globes and taking one in her mouth as the bra was still flying through the air.

Kate sighed as the pressure that had been building eased a little with the touch, but the relief didn't last long as the sensations from her chest shot straight down to her groin. She could feel the wetness pool. Pressing the crotch of her jeans into Faith's leg she threw her head back at the touch and started grinding herself down.

Taking one last suck of a nipple, Faith let it go and looked up at her lover. "Ready?"

With the words, Kate's eyes flew open and it took all her will to stop her hips. "Not yet."

"What?" Faith asked confused as Kate stood up.

"I need to feel you, see you," she said. Leaning forward she helped her compliant lover out of her top and bra. Then leaving her to undress the rest of herself, Kate undid her jeans and slid them off, taking her panties with them. She heard Faith gasp as her eyes were level with her sex.

Faith quickly got rid of her own clothes, then lay back waiting. She growled, "God, I want you."

The words had the desired effect as Kate straddled her body, this time placing her mound on a muscled thigh. Her knee pressed up against Faith, making the Slayer's hips move a few times, groaning softly as she battled with her natural desire to take over.

"Good girl," Kate teased, starting her own thrusting motion. She took hold of Faith's hands and placed them on her breasts. They instantly kneaded the globes softly before thumbs started brushing the sensitive nipples. Kate grunted and pleaded, "Harder."

The fingers pulled at the erect nubs, eliciting soft moans from the blonde. As Kate could feel herself heading towards the precipice, she found herself on her back and a pair of eyes looking down at her hungrily. Seeking permission with her eyes and receiving it with a look of trust, Faith opened up the slick folds with a finger and groaned at the result. She moved her finger around, coating the area before pushing inside. Kate's walls clasped around it, hungry for more. Adding another finger she entered again, closing her eyes at the sensation of being inside her lover.

"That's it," Kate encouraged.

Faith's eyes returned to lock with darkened blue ones. The love she felt for this woman always added an extra dimension to their lovemaking. She hoped that they'd never stop feeling that connection every time they were like this.

"I love you," she whispered, slowing down the pace so the words registered clearly in Kate's mind.

"Hmm," Kate agreed and reached down with her palm, placing it gently on Faith's dark hair, asking for climax.

Faith gave her a loving smile that turned into a leer as she broke eye contact to look down at her finger sliding in and out of her lover's core. Her fingers stopped momentarily as she brought her lips down onto the engorged clitoris and sucked it into her mouth.

"Oh, Faith," Kate groaned. "Yes..."

Swirling her tongue around her clit, she heard Kate ask for more. The fingers inside started moving again, adding to the pressure building up. Kate was making soft noises almost constantly, telling Faith she was nearly there. The Slayer gave the clit one last suck before moving her mouth up to Kate's. Her thumb replaced her tongue, the rhythm never missing a beat. Their eyes connected again as Kate arched her back and shuddered out her release. Faith didn't stop until she had drawn out the climax as long as possible.

"More?" Faith asked with her fingers still inside, loving the feel of the being there.

Kate gave her a smile and shook her head. She searched and found Faith's other hand and clasped it to her. A few minutes later she moved her head to find Faith studying her with a blissful expression. When she realised Kate was looking at her, she started to withdraw her fingers.

"Not yet," Kate said.

"Okay," Faith smiled and wiggled them slightly. Kate, still sensitive, felt a tremor. "Can you handle another round?"

"Please?" Kate asked bringing the wet lips to hers and tasting herself.

Faith pressed their breasts together and started moving her fingers again. Needing relief herself, she moved her vulva against Kate's leg. "Like that?"

"Mmm, yes," Kate said helping Faith achieve the best angle by moving her leg. "You feel so good."

"You feel so hot," Faith replied thrusting her fingers back into the warm channel again. They moved together until Faith couldn't hold back any longer and shook against the blonde as her orgasm overtook her. The fact her fingers were connected to her lover in the most intimate of ways helped her over the edge.

"Love you," Kate whispered after Faith recovered enough to move. The blonde started moving her hips, driving herself on the fingers. They locked eyes as Kate kept up the deep thrusts. Faith used her other hand to stimulate the excited clitoris, determined to finish what'd she'd started.

A couple of hours later, Faith opened the fridge and pulled out two bottles of water. Kate was lounging on the twisted sheets exhausted from their lovemaking. After handing her a bottle, Faith opened hers and drank half the contents. When the blonde gave her a curious look, Faith shrugged.

"It was you who wore me out tonight," she grinned. "I suppose I deserve it though, all those times I've kept you on the edge."

"Well, I know I love delayed orgasms and I wanted you to experience that. It's not often I get to have it all my own way with you." Kate reached out a hand and pulled her down beside her. They both moved to close the tiny gap between them.

"And we didn't get to use your birthday present," Faith pouted. She couldn't seem to find the vibrator at the important moment.

"Plenty of time," Kate said and sighed happily.

"So, have you had a good birthday?" Faith asked finishing the rest of the water and settling down again.

"The best," Kate answered lazily.

"Yeah?"

Kate turned towards her and nodded. "Love suits you, Faith. It may have taken you a long time to find it, but you are a natural at it."

"Thanks," Faith said though she wondered where the comment came from.

"I know how hard you try to be perfect for me, and I love you for it. Maybe because you know what it is like to be unloved and unwanted, you make sure you don't make any mistakes. Like today, you have gone beyond what I expected of you."

"Overboard?" Faith asked uncertain of what Kate was trying to say.

"No, not overboard. If this is the way you need to show me how much I mean to you, I certainly can't complain. But I just want you to know that you don't have to be perfect. We have both made mistakes, done things that have hurt one another. We've forgiven each other and moved on. I know you're not perfect."

"I just want you to know I'm willing to work hard to keep you," Faith said seriously.

Kate smiled at the words, "I know. But one little gift and a 'I love you' would have been enough today."

"But you are worth so much more than that to me."

"I know," Kate repeated.

"You're right, I want to make up for what we've both missed out on."

"Thank you." They kissed gently. "Now, if I don't get some sleep I'm going to be useless at work tomorrow."

"Right," Faith chuckled. "Happy birthday, Kate."

CHAPTER FOUR

The Slayer watched as Barbara stomped back into the kitchen. The pregnant woman gently sat down into the chair she'd vacated minutes ago.

"I can't believe I'm having another one. I must be a sucker for punishment," she moaned as she put her hand to her head in frustration.

As Faith smiled, they heard Josh shouting at her from the living room, demanding that he be allowed to play with his toys. The frazzled mother had found him playing in Marcus's den about half an hour before Faith showed up. The boy knew all too well that his father's den was off limits. When Faith arrived, Barbara stopped him from playing with her and ever since then he'd been using every attention-seeking method he'd ever learnt.

The Slayer took a sip from the chocolate milk in front of her, drowning out the sound of Josh. "Thank goodness Kate and I agree on children. Neither of us want one."

"You say that now, but I never thought Marcus would make a good father, not after his past. But now, well you've seen him with Josh. And with this one maybe being a--" Barbara stopped abruptly.

"A what?" Faith asked.

"Marcus has studied those ultra-sounds and is convinced it's a girl. But I'm not too sure."

"You really don't want to know?"

"No. I didn't know what Josh was and I liked the excitement of not knowing. We don't care if it's a boy or girl, all we ask for is a healthy child."

"And it is, right?" Faith asked with concern.

"All the tests have come back normal, so crossing our fingers," Barbara said with a brief smile.

"I don't know how you can go through that," Faith shook her head.

"Women have been doing it for thousands of years," Barbara said as she reached over and tapped Faith's hand. "It's a truly beautiful part of life."

"Is that before or after all the pain," Faith teased, yet her face clouded over with a frown. "Makes me think that's why my mother didn't love me. Too much pain involved. Of course I had to be the kid that tested every rule that I was ever told about."

"Faith," Barbara said in a gentle tone, "your mother is at fault for what she did to you. As a mother, I could never, ever lay a hand on Josh in anger. Your mother had problems, but she should have considered you a blessing not a problem. If she didn't love you it wasn't because you weren't lovable, it was because she couldn't see what was in front of her."

"Then why did her drinking get worse the older I got," Faith grumbled. "I remember when I was younger she used to actually laugh and smile. Treat me to an icecream every now and then. Not every memory of her is bad…just ninety-five percent."

"I don't know what it was like for you, but there is no excuse for a parent, or any person for that matter, to do what she did." Barbara opened her arms and waited until Faith knelt by the chair. Taking the girl into an embrace she continued, "You may not have been the perfect child, very few children are. But if the parents of the world stopped loving their children because of their mistakes, it would be a very sad world indeed. A parent is supposed to love and nurture, guide and support, not send their children off into the world without the skills required to build a good life. Your mother failed as a parent, but that's her fault, not yours."

"Sounds like something a shrink would say," Faith said laying her head on Barbara's chest. "Blame the parents."

"No, I'm putting blame where it should be. I believe in people taking responsibility for their own actions." Barbara chuckled, "Even Marcus. His parents are some of the nicest people, and what Marcus did in his younger days in no way reflects how his parents brought him up."

Faith retreated to the other side of the table, trying to shake the memories their conversation had brought up. Changing the subject, she looked at Barbara. "Did you know what Marcus had done before you married him?"

Barbara turned her eyes to a place behind Faith before re-establishing contact. "Has he told you what happened?"

"I know he owed some people money, he went to jail for a few months, I just assumed it was small time robbery or drug possession." Faith saw a troubled look on Barbara's face. "Don't talk about this if it brings back bad memories."

"I remember the first time I met Marcus." Barbara leaned back in her chair and smiled. "Summer of 1990. I was just out of college. That summer…" Barbara had a blissful expression on her face. "I wanted one last summer of freedom before I became an adult that was tied down with a job. My friends and I ran a little wild, going to parties and clubs that I would never have dreamed about doing while studying."

"You were a nerd?" Faith asked with a smile.

"No, just aware that my degree was important. I'd already seen too many people drop out or barely scrape through to want to throw away my degree like that. Not to say that I didn't have some fun times while there."

Faith nodded, yet still felt a slight twinge of regret. She would never have the whole college experience. "Go on."

Barbara c
