Call Me Amazing

DISCLAIMERS: Faith & Kate are not owned by me, but Mutant Enemy & Fox. Lyrics belong to David Franj and standard records.
NOTES: David Franj is an Australian singer, who comes from my home town, Melbourne. The first time I heard this song, I was amazed at the depth of emotion I felt. I think we have all felt this way one time or another. Written on a 44 degree day in January (that's Celsius, not Fahrenheit) when all I could be bothered doing was watch the tennis and cricket and listen to this song. I never edited it and it's been sitting on my hard drive ever since.
TIMELINE: Not really relevant, but before The Shroud of Rahmon

-----------------------

Flipping the radio on she settled on the couch, a lamp the only source of light in the crispness of the cold apartment on this winter's night. Her mind wandered over mundane subjects; that she had to fill her car with fuel the next morning, that her phone bill was nearly overdue and that she needed to do the laundry. The radio announcer came back on, babbling about the latest gossip that she had no interest in. Thankfully he didn't drone on too long and the next song began. The lyrics started almost immediately accompanied by an acoustic guitar, bass and drums. She let the lyrics wash over her.

I'LL NEVER BE THE WATER
I'LL NEVER BE THE WINE

I'LL NEVER BE THE LAST HAND YOU HOLD
BEFORE YOU WALK INSIDE

Her thoughts turned to the one person she didn't want to think about that night. Oh, don't torture me, she thought, half tempted to turn off the radio. But it was no use, her mind flashed fan image of the girl's hand and her intertwined. Despite the chill in the room, her hand began to sweat.

I'LL NEVER HAVE THE LAST DANCE
AND I'LL NEVER HAVE THE FIRST

She could imagine how she danced. Moving with a grace, yet an inherent seductiveness that spoke of her self-confidence. The girl used her body for her job, those toned muscles moving lithely under her soft skin. To have that body dancing next to hers would surely melt her!

I'LL NEVER EVEN GET TO TELL YOU BABY
HOW GOOD YOU LOOK

She imagined that she would look good no matter where she was. In the morning light; after a shower; in full flight as she fought a vampire; over the candlelight during a romantic dinner and most intoxicatingly when they were making love. But she would never be able to…

The chorus kicked in loudly with the instruments amplifying.

AND I'LL NEVER BE A FACE ON YOUR BEDROOM WALL

'Or in her mind', she sighed.

AND I'LL NEVER BE A LIFE LINE YOU MIGHT CALL

Not unless she was the last in a line of phone numbers already dialled.

YOU MIGHT SAY I'M AMAZING

'I wish.' She sighed out loud this time and closed her eyes.

BABY SAY THAT I'M AMAZING TOO

Please, she begged silently along with the singer, then chastised herself.

The second verse started, the music quietening down again.

I'LL NEVER BE THE WISE GUY
YOU'LL NEVER HEAR MY JOKES

'I'd love to make her smile,' she thought. She has the most beautiful smile. So sweet, charming and warm at times, then other times it could be smug, seductive and heart-stopping. She knew the girl hadn't much to smile about lately, but if given a chance she would love to change that.

I'LL NEVER GET TO BEG AT YOUR WINDOW

She smiled at that image. Such as schoolboy thing to do, but around the object of her fantasies she felt as awkward and shy as she did in high school.

AND TELL YA I'VE JUST GONE BROKE

Spending all she had to impress her. Yet, she knew that the girl wasn't one to be impressed with the traditional gifts. Gifts from the heart may be appreciated more than material things after all the woman had been through.

AND I'LL NEVER KNOW THE WINTER
AS I WALK OUT YOUR DOOR

'Every time she leaves the room I miss her presence', she groaned in her weakness. 'Feels like all the warmth leaves with her. My life is so dull when she's not around.'

I'LL NEVER MAKE A FOOL OUT OF MYSELF
TO MAKE YOU WANNA WANT ME MORE

She smiled, knowing that she would do just about anything to convince her of her love. But that would never happen.

The emotion in the singer's voice matched her own silent and unrequited pleadings.

AND I'LL NEVER BE A FACE ON YOUR BEDROOM WALL
AND I'LL NEVER BE A LIFE LINE
YOU MIGHT CALL ME AMAZING
YOU MIGHT SAY I'M AMAZING
YOU MIGHT CALL ME AMAZING
YOU MIGHT SAY I'M AMAZING
BABY SAY THAT I'M AMAZING TOO
JUST SAY THAT I'M AMAZING TOO

Could the girl ever think of her like that? She probably didn't even think of her at all. And the word amazing wasn't likely to be among the girl's thoughts if she did spare any consideration for her.

Tears pooled in her eyes, as the song continued through to the bridge where only a drum beat and acoustic guitar could be heard. The singer's words stood out more in the softness of the instruments.

I'LL NEVER BE THE WATER
AND I'LL NEVER BE THE WINE

Never be anything on her menu, she shook her head.

I'LL NEVER BE THE LAST FACE THAT YOU SEE
BEFORE YOU SAY GOODNIGHT

She thought about kissing her goodnight, then lying next to her, wrapped up in those strong arms. Just the thought of it had her heart speeding up. And waking up with those eyes watching her. A shiver travelled down her spine and she pulled out of those thoughts, knowing that they would only lead to more hurt.

The song moved into the chorus again and she let the words play in her mind again after drifting off into her own thoughts for a few seconds.

…YOU MIGHT SAY I'M AMAZING
BABY SAY THAT I'M AMAZING TOO
JUST SAY THAT I'M AMAZING TOO
YOU MIGHT CALL ME AMAZING
YOU MIGHT SAY I'M AMAZING
YOU MIGHT CALL ME AMAZING
YOU MIGHT SAY I'M AMAZING
BABY SAY…

The song finished with this plea before the announcer came back telling her the station she was listening to and the time. She was surprised to find her cheek wet from a tear. Wiping it away, her thoughts travelled down a sombre path. Would she ever have the courage to voice feelings she kept well hidden? Would the girl ever find her as amazing as she found the sexy girl she had dreamed about for so long? She shook her head and turned off the radio in disgust, never knowing that in an apartment not too far away the radio was still playing, but the girl's mind was on the previous song.

After some nervous pacing in one of the apartments a phone was picked up and dialled.

"Hello?" a warm husky voice answered.

"Hi, Faith, it's Kate Lockley."
