It Was The Right Thing To Do By Eos (dewdrop@mochamail.com) RATING: NC-17 for sex, language, angst and Faith's dirty mind. DISCLAIMER: Not mine. Characters belong to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy & Fox. MAJOR SPOILERS: Angel: The Prodigal, Buffy: Who Are You. Dialogue taken from WAY belongs to Mutant Enemy. General spoilers for both shows up to these episodes. SUMMARY: What if Kate had gone to Sunnydale after 'The Prodigal' for answers and ended up meeting Faith on her way out after swapping bodies back at the end of 'Who Are You.' TIMELINE: This starts during Who Are You, which I'm basing a week after The Prodigal is set. AUTHORS NOTES: Started Mid-Jan 2001, finished Early-March 2001. I guess I wanted to see what Kate's and Faith's reactions would be to each other if they didn't know they had common acquaintances like Angel. Removing all foreknowledge opened up more possibilities for both their characters. I also wanted to explore Faith's feelings at the end of WAY and Kate's learning to deal with death of her father. If you find a mistake, sorry my bad :). Hope you enjoy it. DEDICATION: This was easy to write mainly because these characters are so alive to me. This is in part to Eliza Dushku and Elisabeth Rohm but it is also due to the writers who put the words in their mouths. So thanks to everyone who works so hard on the show. *************************************************** The police room was silent, save for the occasional keys clicking, phones ringing and hushed voices. Detective Kate Lockley was focussed on her own computer screen, researching her new obsession. Ever since the death of her father, she had vowed to rid the city of every evil thing she could. She had given herself no rest, spending almost all her free time learning or trying to track down where evil things lurked. She spent countless hours scanning unsolved cases, unusual cases and any other case that could indicate demon activity. Kate shut down the file she was reading and closed her eyes. Glancing at her watch she noted that time had flown by again. Turning off the computer, she slowly made her way down to her car. She climbed in and leaned her head back, sighing loudly. How much longer could she keep this up, she didn't know. She'd heard the whispers in the precinct, the rumours she was going crazy, that she should take time off, that she couldn't handle the job anymore. Yet she was still maintaining her good service record and there were no complaints from the upper levels on her performance. But soon something had to give, it wasn't possible to keep going like she was. The last few nights she had gone to bed well after three in the morning and tonight would be no different. She put the keys in the ignition, catching something out the corner of her eye. A yellow envelope sat on the passenger seat. It simply read 'Kate.' She opened it and found papers inside relating a Californian town called Sunnydale. Newspaper articles of strange phenomena, a school being blown up without investigation and several murder cases that had the police baffled. There was a write-up of the town, highlighting the fact that it had 12 cemeteries and 43 churches. Kate scanned the information, sure that whoever had given it to her, was giving her a lead. Was it Angel or one of his employees or did someone else know about what really happened to her father? Putting the papers back she made her way home to bed. If this information was as good as she thought it was, she needed to be rested. ******************* Kate checked the map again, the car idling on the side of the road. The sun was set high in the sky on this late winter Saturday. Only a few more miles to go until she hit the town of Sunnydale. The day before she had tried to trace whomever had given her the packet, but to no avail. She had twice picked up the phone to ring Angel Investigations but backed out at the last minute. If it was one of them, they didn't want it known and Kate was not ready to talk to any of them. She shook her head, trying to lose the recent memories and pulled back into the traffic. Her plan was to go in as a civilian, from what she read of the police in this town, theirs was one of the lowest success rates in the state. Obviously, whatever was going on here was evading the law. If they were demons, as Kate suspected, then that would explain things. Her question was, why this town? She had come to find out. Her first goal was to visit the cemeteries in town. Often they told the story on the town's life, more than people could. Not a pleasant task considering she had been to a cemetery for an entirely different reason earlier in the week. While walking around the grounds, Kate found many people dying very close to each other, sometimes within the same couple of days. Not being an expert in this kind of thing, Kate used her own police experience, piecing together times where there was a lot of deaths and noted them for later research to see if was a correlation between them and some newsworthy event in the town. Next, she started on the churches to find out why there were so many for a town of Sunnydale's size. She didn't find much of an answer and as she visited the thirteenth church, the sun was beginning to set. Deciding to stay and research more the next day, Kate went and found accommodation, had a quick meal then decided to see how the nightlife was in the town. Having been in LA all her life, she thought this town should be tame compared to the streets back home. She came across a club called the Bronze and decided to observe the place for a while. Nothing much seemed to be happening. The place was filled with both high schoolers and college kids enjoying themselves with a dance or a game of pool. Oh to be that age again, she thought miserably. She noticed a blonde woman having a drinking contest with a group of boys literally hanging around her. The blonde apparently decided that they were no good and moved away bumping into another blonde and a redhead, who she seemed to know. Kate scanned the room but there didn't even seem to be an illicit activity in sight. She stayed another hour or so, watching the crowd below her. They seemed blissfully unaware that there may anything lurking outside waiting for them. She went back to the motel to study the information she had collected during the day. That's where she found herself the next morning, sleeping on papers still laid out on the bed. She clicked on the TV while she ate a quick breakfast. The program was interrupted for a special news bulletin. 'A situation in a Sunnydale church this morning has police on the scene. There are reports that three bandits broke in and barricaded themselves in the church with at least 20 parishioners. One of the few who escaped described the three men as frighteningly disfigured, almost inhuman. So far, one escapee has since died of severe neck wounds.' Kate didn't hear the rest of the news, she was on her way out to the car with her bags. After finding the frequency being used by the police on the scanner, she started the car and back out of the motel. Finding out the name of the church and it on the map, she raced through the town. When she arrived she could see police cars blocking the road. She climbed out and raced over, but the police weren't letting anyone near the church. Kate stepped back in two minds about her next course of action. She could get involved and be questioned about why she decided to take on a case in another county or… She was about to talk to the lead officer when a young man started declaring that it was a Military operation. What the fuck! She watched as he talked to the officer. After hearing little snips of the conversation she understood that the man seemed to know the police weren't equipped to deal with what was inside. Finally, Kate had a breakthrough in the town. But why were the military involved? Or more importantly how were they involved? A commotion off to the right drew her attention. A man was begging an officer to let him and a couple of teenagers into the church. Either he was made or he knew more than the police did. Kate moved closer managing to see a dark haired girl sneak off around the back of the church while her buddies held up the policeman. She went to follow but was stopped and told to stay back. Kate desperately wanted to get in on the action, but it was a little too late to announce she was a cop now, there would be more questions than she needed right now. A couple of minutes later parishioners started pouring out of the church in mass panic. There were shouts of someone in there fighting the men, of dead bodies and weird looking things. In the confusion, Kate rushed to the church in time to see the same dark haired girl run out also looking frightened. As she turned at a booming noise behind her she crashed onto the ground. "Sorry," a strangled voice said as Kate regained her balance. Kate looked up into dark eyes. "You okay?" She asked, brushing herself down. The girl looked back at the church, terror on her face. "Are you hurt?" The girl was still looking back, but when she saw nothing coming out after her she turned back to the woman. "No, but there's people in there that are." She pointed back towards the church "There are paramedics and police around near the entrance, they'll be taking care of them." The girl nodded, satisfied with the answer. "You sure you are alright? I can take you to a hospital." "No, I'm five…I'm fine." The girl shook her head as she hurried the answer. She turned to go, but felt an arm on hers. She looked down at the hand gripping her, then to the concerned look on the blonde's face. "Why did you go in there?" "Huh?" Her eyes darted around. "Why did you sneak in the church? I saw you." The girl gave her a guilty look. "What, are you a cop or something?" She looked Kate up and down. "I'm Kate," she said holding out her hand. The girl hesitated for long seconds before taking it and giving it a strong shake. "Faith." She took another look back at the church. "And I'm going." "Vampires." Faith whipped her head around. "What?" But the look on her face gave the game away. "Vampires, they were in there attacking people." "Listen lady--" "You willingly go into a church full of vampires and come out running. You even had your buddies cover for you while you snuck past the police. That's not exactly smart behaviour…unless you knew something no one else did. Judging from the fear on your face, I doubt you were their accomplice. So what gives?" "You must be a cop." Faith gave a wry smile. "I am, but I'm not with them," she said as she pointed in the way of the other police. "I'm from LA up here for the weekend." "Funny place to spend a weekend away." Faith moved away from where the crowd was thinning out and Kate moved with her. "Why do you say that?" "Vampires are right at home here. And seeing you know about them…" Faith paused thinking. "Are you a demon hunter? Cause you sure don't look like one." "I'm a cop, I just told you." Kate ignored the slight insult. "Who just happens to know about vamps. Not buying it." Faith shook her head, looking around again. Spotting Willow in the distance, she turned around. "Could ask you how you know, too. You probably aren't even out of high school yet." Faith laughed. "You have no idea who I am. Now if you excuse me I have somewhere to be." "I'll give you a lift," Kate offered, not wanting to let the girl go before she found some answers. Whoever had given her the envelope knew what they were doing. "No thanks." Faith had already started walking in the opposite direction to the crowd and the rest of the Scoobies who probably had followed Buffy to the scene. Kate followed her, walking at a fast pace to keep up with the dark haired girl. When they were well away from the church Faith turned. "Look lady, I have an aversion to cops, especially ones that follow me around. So I suggest you get your ass back to LA." Kate sighed wearily. "Whatever you did in there, I'm sure a lot of people are grateful." She took the gamble that the girl had been helping, judging by her earlier concern over the victims. "It was the right thing to do." Faith crossed her arms staring at the cop. A car came down the road and Faith sprinted to hide behind a tree, leaving Kate shaking her head as she watched the van roll away into the distance. "What the hell was that about!" Kate demanded as Faith came from her hiding place. "I somehow doubt that vampires are driving in the middle of the day." Faith took a one look at Kate's glare and started running. Kate followed, but soon found she didn't have the pace to keep up. She back-pedalled to her car and sped off in the direction Faith had disappeared. She couldn't see her as she came to an intersection. She took a right. Navigating the roads for about five minutes, she was ready to turn back before spotting Faith heading towards the bus station. Kate slowed to a crawl and pulled up in front of the girl. "Hey." Faith turned and gave her a murderous look. "Wanna jump in?" "To walk fifty yards?" Faith scoffed. "Where you headed?" "Out of this town." Faith came around to the driver's side. "Without any possessions?" "Got a problem with that?" Faith leaned against the car, looking down at Kate. "I gotta say you are an enigma." Kate smiled, not intimidated by Faith's actions. "Well, gee, I gave you a thrill for the day. Knowing any more about me might ruin the impression." "First impressions aren't always correct." "So you're not a cop who likes to stick their nose into other people's business?" Faith leaned down a little more. "And you are not running away from whoever you fear in this town?" Faith stood up straight and backed off slightly. "Been here too long." She fingered a sticker on the windscreen. "How does LA sound?" "Like it starts with L and ends in A." Kate had to laugh. "I think you know what I mean. I'm heading back there myself. I could give you a lift down there, save you some money." Faith stood there, unsure. This was a cop, granted she knew nothing about Faith, but they were out looking for her and she wasn't about to get caught. No fucking way. But if the cop didn't know, then it was probably the best way to get out of town considering exit points were likely to be risky. "How's the weather down there?" Faith leaned down again. "Sunny." Kate smiled. "Then let's go." Faith walked around to the passenger side. Before she sat down she moved a yellow envelope onto the back seat. She saw the police scanner on the dash and was relieved it wasn't on. "So you really are a cop?" Kate pulled out her ID. "Detective Kate Lockley, LAPD. Impressive. Picture doesn't flatter you though. Much better looking sitting here next to me." "What's your qualification? Demon Hunter?" Kate took her ID back and glanced in the rear-view mirror while she turned back on the road. "Vampire Slayer," Faith's voice turned melancholy. Kate glanced across wondering if Faith was pulling her leg. "You slay vampires?" Faith shifted in the seat. "Is that what you did today?" "Whatever." "I think it's a bit more than that." Kate wondered if Faith was a reluctant hero or if it was something else. "You've just saved those people's lives." "It was the right thing to do." Faith shrugged her shoulders, half wishing she could change her mind about taking a ride with this woman. "You said that already. How does one get to be a Vampire Slayer?" "I got called," Faith said nonchalantly. "Called? By whom?" "The powers." "Powers?" "No idea about them. I guess with all the demons in the world there has to be something to try to balance them out." Faith looked out the window as they passed the 'You are now leaving Sunnydale' sign. She clenched her fist in a small victory. "And they called on you to slay demons?" Kate asked. "Pretty much." "You're just a girl!" Kate exclaimed. "Another time I might prove you wrong," Faith said and leaned her head back with her eyes closed. She didn't get much sleep in Riley's bed. Don't go there, she thought to herself. Move on. Faith fought tears, but they pooled at the bottom of her eyes. She turned fully towards the window as they spilled. "You telling me you have the strength and skills to fight vampires?" Kate turned her head, but there was no answer. Torn between comforting the girl and knowing that she didn't want it, Kate kept silent for a time. That gave Faith a chance to at least compose herself. She was tough, she told herself, so it didn't work out in B's body. She didn't like it anyway, all those people wanting her to hug and be the good little girl. She didn't know how B stood it. She even had a boyfriend that said 'I love you' after sex. She shivered at the memory of the beefstick trying to comfort her. He probably said the words so he could have another go with her. It made her sick now that she thought about it. "You know," Kate broke the uneasy silence, "I don't know what's going on here, but I'll help you if you want. You need money?" Faith turned. "What do you want?" "Want?" "Nothing's for free," Faith said as she shook her head, "not even a cop's help." "Don't think of me as a cop, then." Faith snickered, "You got to be kidding me. You scream cop all over." "I just want to help. Make sure you're not going to sleep on the streets tonight. In return, I have the satisfaction knowing I've helped someone. That's all I want. "I don't need your charity." "I'm not asking you to take it." Kate drummed her fingers on the steering wheel. This girl was in some trouble, she could feel it. The question was; who was she running from and what did it have to do with vampires? "You seem like you can take care of yourself." "You got that right, been doing it a long time," Faith's voice turned angry. "It gets hard, doesn't it?" Kate said, her own feelings being stirred up by the girl's tone. "Look I'm not here to have a little bonding session with you." Faith turned her attention back to watching the scenery go by. Kate nodded to herself, trying to think of a way to help this young woman. Her own grief still on her mind, she wasn't in the mood to deal with other people's problems. Still, if this girl was really a Vampire Slayer, Kate wanted to know everything about her and Sunnydale. "I went to Sunnydale for some answers," Kate started. She waited to see if Faith was interested. "To what?" Faith never looked around. "To what that yellow envelope contains." Faith remembered the envelope and reached back for it. Opening it she took the papers out and slowly went through them until she came to an article about Sunnydale High being blown up. B, she thought, you bitch. Her handed went unconsciously to her gut. "You know something about that?" Kate saw Faith study one particular article. Faith was high school age and might have even gone to the school in question. "Fucking bitch killed him," Faith mumbled. "Killed whom?" Faith didn't answer, she was too busy tracing the photo that accompanied the article. "Who killed whom?" "Never mind." Faith moved onto the next articles, briefly scanning the contents. When she was finished she put them back in the envelope and threw it onto the backseat. "So what do you make of them?" Faith's behaviour only strengthened Kate's concern about the girl's welfare. Had she witnessed a murder? "You got quite a collection there." "Not mine." Kate saw an encouraging look from Faith so she continued, "An anonymous source gave them to me." "Because?" "I'm not sure." Kate shrugged. "There's gotta be more to it than that." "I have an idea who it might be, but I'm not sure why they did it, other--" Kate shook her head, trying to keep it together. Breaking down in front of this girl was not on. "Other than what?" Faith sensed Kate was up here on more than a fact-finding mission. The detective's body had tensed up. "To show me that," Kate laughed hollowly, "there's more to the demon world than I ever imagined. The question is why does a smallish town in California seem to be a haven for these creatures." "The Hellmouth." "The what?" At least the girl was answering her. "The Hellmouth. There is a portal between here and hell. Demons are drawn to it." Faith explained seeing Kate was actually interested in this stuff. She always found it boring, Giles or Wesley alway going on about this or that when all she was thinking was 'bring it on.' "A portal?" "Under that school. It's closed. It's not like demons can jump back and forth. But I've seen the thing open and believe me it's not a pretty sight." Faith looked over and Kate nodded encouragingly. "I saw that you've made notes on the cemeteries and churches. Sunnydale is not your normal American town. It has more demon activity than anywhere, that's why the Slayer was sent there. You know how there are so-called UFO hotspots?" Kate nodded. "You can call Sunnydale a demon hotspot." "The town seems relatively quiet." Kate thought back to the club she was in. "That's the weirdest thing, mostly everyone is unaware of what's going on. The police don't have a clue. If anything goes down it's like the whole town goes into denial or relates it to something like gang activity." "So you were sent to Sunnydale to make sure the Hellmouth is kept closed. What changed?" At the mention of the present Faith turned her head back after becoming animated when she was explaining about Sunnydale. "Did a demon kill someone you cared for?" Faith shook her head, the irony of that statement hitting her hard. Kate was also affected by her own words. She took a time to get her feelings back under control. Blowing out a breath, she reminded herself that she needed to get back home in one piece and this wasn't helping. ******************* They rode in silence, both tired from their emotional roller coasters. Faith dozed for a while, trying to erase the memories of the last few days. She couldn't stand to think that she was back in her own body and still hurting from the beating she'd given it. She scrunched her face up in disgust. The boss thought he was doing her such a favour, but while the cops couldn't identify her, there had been too much pressure to not give herself away. She couldn't even ditch the town without screwing it up. She sighed softly. She could be out of the state by now, the ticket was sitting there in her pocket. Kate had told her that she had saved lives. She hadn't done that in a long time and maybe it felt good. Like when she saved that girl outside the Bronze. Sure the girl was hysterical, but at least she appreciated it. Was what the boss said true? Were her days were numbered? She drew her lower lip in, holding back the painful expression. The cops were after her, if B ever found out where she was she would come after her and now B had escaped the Watchers those bastards might also be in the hunt. It was either about going out a big bang, like the boss said, or laying low. LA seemed a perfect town for that, it must be easy to get lost in that city, after all there were thousands doing that every day. Laying low, she could do that. Maybe she might take the cop's offer of money; it was a better option than risking a robbery or four. Faith felt the car pull up and the engine turn off. She opened her eyes and found herself in a parking lot of a fast food joint. Kate had unbuckled and was looking at her. "I'm hungry, you?" Faith nodded in response. Might as well get a free feed, who knew how long it would be before the next one. They ordered and sat down in silence, each hoping the other didn't see how unsettled they were. Faith tucked eagerly into her food, not having eaten since -- well she didn't know when her body last ate. Which was a scary feeling. What the hell had B done in her body? She tentatively felt her arm where she had a little pain. Something had happened there, maybe where she had the needle to keep her quiet. She excused herself to go to the bathroom and had a closer look. Yep, the area was a little infected. No big, it should heal okay. Faith looked at herself in the mirror. Stared hard. She brought her arm up and punched the reflection. She was still there. She punched the mirror again, cracking it slightly. She still looked like the murdering bitch that she was. Again she did it, creating a big crack in the mirror. Again. Again. Again. The mirror shattered. People came rushing through the door, but she didn't notice them. At least she couldn't see herself now. "Faith, what are you doing?" Kate pushed through the crowd gathered in the doorway. The dark haired girl turned staring blankly at her. "Faith?" Still the girl looked blankly. A worker came in and surveyed the damage. "What the hell happened in here?" the worker demanded. Faith turned to him, unseeing. "You're gonna pay for that. Goddamn it." The worker called to someone for a broom. "Don't have any money." Faith shrugged her shoulders, slowly waking to what she had done. "What do you mean you don't have any money? I'll sue if I have to." He pointed a finger at Faith, then let a girl come in with a broom. "Wait a minute," Kate stepped in. "She's with me." "Well I'm not letting her go until she gives me a contact number or pays for it." "How much?" "I don't know. I've never had to replace a mirror before." The guy stared at Faith. "Look, I'm a cop. I'll give you my details and when you find out how much it's gonna cost, give me a call and I'll send you the money." The worker looked appeased. "You a cop?" Kate whipped out her ID and the worker nodded. They moved out of the bathroom - Kate literally pulling Faith along - and into a back room where Kate exchanged details. When they were both settled in the car, Kate turned to Faith, opening her mouth but the words not coming. Faith had not said a word since declaring she had no money. She had gone along with Kate, cradling her hand and not making eye contact with anyone. The worker was happy to deal with Kate and leave the crazy kid alone. "You hurt?" Kate asked blowing out a heavy breath. Faith looked trapped and just about ready to run. "Let me see," Kate asked trying to take a look at Faith's hand, but was stopped with the good one. "Why'd you go and pay for the thing," Faith painfully said, her voice thick. "I don't think you need to worry about that right now. When you have the money you can pay me back." "What's stopping me from getting outta here and leaving you to foot the bill?" "I don't know, Faith. What is stopping you?" "Don't...know," Faith said barely above a whisper. She looked down to her hand, which had reddened considerably since she last looked. She flexed the fist, wincing in pain as it closed again. "Okay." Kate nodded taking in Faith's action. "Do you need treatment?" "Shouldn't need." Faith flexed her hand again. "I'm not about to leave you while you're like this. You need help. I'm just not sure what kind yet." Kate could see the resistance in Faith's face. "Faith, there is no way I'm going to let you go out onto the streets like this. You've already hurt yourself once and I don't want it to happen again." She watched Faith take that in. "So, tell me, what is the next step?" Faith looked at her then turned away watching the cars drive in and out. "I can't do anything, Faith, if you don't tell me. I honesty don't what to do other than take you down to a hospital," she said as Faith sneered. "But you don't want that. So how about helping me out here." "Don't know." Faith grimaced. "Have you got someone to stay with? Friends, family?" "Nope." "No one?" Faith shook her head. "At all?" Tears started to fall silently down Faith's cheeks. She turned her head away, knowing it was too late. Kate decided not to embarrass her. "Okay. You don't have anywhere to stay, so that's where we start." "I'll check into a motel," Faith said with difficulty. "And do what? I'm very concerned here, Faith." Kate closed her eyes. She was stuck. Faith wasn't about to stay put in any welfare place she put her, the hospital was out, Faith had no one and there was no way she was going to leave her alone. That left Kate finding someone who she herself trusted to take Faith in or to offer her own place. She thought of Angel. He probably did this kind of thing or at least knew of someone. No, seeing Angel was the last thing she needed right now. "How about you stay at my place, while we decide?" "Yeah, sure, whatever," Faith said. She would bolt the first time the detective left her alone. "Good." Kate pulled out of the parking lot and drove the twenty minutes back to her middle-class apartment block. She grabbed her bag, the envelope and tugged at Faith to get out. For a moment it seemed Faith wasn't going to move, but after another tug she climbed out and slammed the door. PART 2 Faith took in the apartment through mostly unseeing eyes. She headed straight for the sofa and flopped down. Kate put her bag in the bedroom and the envelope with her other pieces of research. She came back to see Faith resting on the sofa. "Make yourself at home. Except for destroying any mirrors that happen to be around." Kate wasn't even sure if Faith was listening. "Do you mind if I sleep?" "No, of course not. Take my bed." Kate pointed the way to her room. "You sure?" Faith stood up slowly. "Yes, you look like you need a good sleep." Kate smiled gently. Maybe Faith would be ready to talk afterwards. She watched as the girl made her way into the room and closed the door. She took a deep breath. Faith couldn't be bothered even having a look in the detective's room. She collapsed on the bed and looked up at the ceiling. Minutes later she fell into a restless sleep. She woke up sometime in the early evening judging by the lack of light. She listened, but heard nothing from the apartment. Maybe Kate had left, but that would be asking for a miracle. Looking around the room, she decided that Kate was a practical person. There were little touches of her personality in the room, but mostly it was simple and neat. She stretched, feeling at least rested. She knew it would take a while to get back to full strength from her coma, in fact she was surprised she had won the fight at Joyce's. Maybe being with lover boy was taking more out of B these days. She checked her fist. Thank goodness for slayer healing. The last thing she wanted was a cop trying to nurse her. Although in an entirely different context, it sounded better than good. Quietly she opened the door. Lights had been turned on, but there was no sign of the detective. "Have a good sleep?" Damn it, Faith noticed a movement in the kitchen. "Yeah." Faith took a chair at the kitchen table watching Kate fry something. Tending to the stir-fry Kate couldn't see Faith's face. "While you were asleep I made enquires at the local welfare centres." Faith made a grunt, causing Kate to peek over her shoulder. "Just in case you change your mind. The list is by the phone." Kate turned back, concentrating on the cooking. "Yeah, thanks." Faith said weakly. "I hope you're hungry, it's not often I cook for two and I think I've made too much." "Starved," Faith said a little more eager. She hadn't finished her lunch in the confusion. "It will be about ten minutes." "Okay." Faith stood and went to the bathroom to wash up. She avoided looking at herself. What she would do for a bit of make-up and a brush. She had nothing; even the few things she stole in Sunnydale were left behind. She sat down again with dinner on the table and waited for Kate to do the same. "Smells good." She said and dug into it. There was silence again, but this time there was a little less tension. ******************* Faith curled into one end of the sofa, listening to Kate put away the last of the dishes. The cop was turning out to be an okay person. Once she found out what Faith was though, it would be all over. She was counting on the fact the detective would have to go to work the next day and then she could make her exit. LA was a big place, the detective would forget about her in a day or two. Kate would have a nice story to tell about the time that she met a slayer. "So," Kate came and sat down on the other end of the sofa, "what do you plan to do tomorrow?" Faith shrugged. "What are you good at?" "Huh?" "Your skills. What are you good at?" Kate questioned. "Fighting." Faith studied her hand. "Anything else?" "Sex." Faith gave her a wink. "That's not exactly what I meant." Kate gave a slight shake of her head, bemused. "Screwing things up," Faith sharply said. "Okay." The word was drawn out as Kate turned to face Faith. "How about tracking, are you good at that?" "Sure." Faith's attention sparked. "I have a tip about strange activity at a warehouse. Now, I think it is probably demon activity, so I'm wary of sending uniforms down there for obvious reasons. I was planning going down there tomorrow, how would you like to come?" "Because I'm a slayer?" Faith showed her apprehension. "Yes. I'm new to fighting things other than humans and I could use the backup." Kate mentally crossed her fingers. She spent a good deal of the afternoon trying to figure how to stop Faith from running the first chance she had. Building trust was the number one factor. "Tonight?" "Actually I was thinking tomorrow." "Why wait?" Faith became thrilled at the chance for a fight, especially one that wasn't against B. "I don't know…" Kate was still concerned with Faith's earlier behaviour. "I'm ready here, Kate. Let's get 'em now before they do more damage." Faith's hand slammed into her palm. Swayed by this, Kate looked at the girl. Could this be what Faith needed to get back on the right track? Kate had speculated that whatever made Faith flee Sunnydale had to do with demons. "Okay, let me get ready." Faith nodded getting charged with the anticipation of a good fight. Kate handed Faith a couple of stakes as they walked towards the dark warehouse. The streets in this part of town were empty. Darkness clung to the figures as they silently approached the building, each covering the other. Faith pulled Kate back as she was about to open the door. Not used to playing second string, Kate tried to brush her off but couldn't. "Let me go first," Faith whispered close to Kate's ear. "I'm the more experienced." Faith couldn't stand the thought of another innocent getting in the way of her war. A renewed war on demons, she thought to herself, and this time no one is gonna die. Kate nodded sensing Faith needed to do this. Faith opened the door, ready for anything on the other side. She found it as something crashed into her. Quickly she regained her balance and took a battle ready stance. Hesitating in case it was human, Faith eyed a horn. Definitely not human. The fight lasted only a few seconds before Faith saw an opening and stabbed the demon with her stake. It was not enough. Whipping her knife from it's hiding place she drew her arm back and thrust it deep in the stomach. No time to check if it did the job as another creature came at her back. She ducked avoiding its blow. This gave her time to regroup and she spared a glance to Kate who had knocked over the first creature. The second demon attacked, but Faith's skill was much better and she managed to get in a jab as the demon missed her. It screamed out in pain. Good shot, Faith thought to herself. These demons were no match even for a weary slayer. She quickly dispatched the second one. As it slumped to the floor, she checked on Kate's progress. The detective was eyeing her with wide eyes. "You five by five?" "Are you human?" Kate asked half threatening her with the stake. "Yes. Slayers are human." Faith whipped her head around at the sound of footsteps. "But now is not the time to have a social chat." Faith rushed the third demon. This one was taken off guard and barely had time to throw a punch before the knife lodged in its abdomen. Giving it a couple of good kicks she reached down and retrieved her knife. Somewhere in the warehouse a grunting was heard. Scanning the area quickly, Faith noticed a light coming from the right side of the building. Not waiting for Kate, Faith dashed for it. In a small room Faith could make out another demon in the dim light. "What are you doing?" The creature asked, his attention being drawn away from a human hanging from chains attached to the ceiling. The young girl was out cold, Faith noticed. "What, you can't come up with something more original?" Faith drew the demon further away from the girl. She was in her element now, all those instincts she hadn't used for more than eight months coming back. The energy was flowing through her body, making her feel alive again. "Arrgh," was all the horned creature said as he charged the slayer. Kate had followed Faith to the room and her gut clenched when she saw the young girl. Running back to her car she called for paramedics and backup. She figured the way Faith was taking down those demons it should be all over by the time someone came. Inside Faith and horned demon were exchanging blows. This last one was a lot stronger than the other three, but Faith was gaining an advantage. She vaguely heard Kate come back in and tried to keep herself between the cop and the demon. "I'm going to crush you," the demon huffed at Faith. "Again with the unoriginals. What kind of demon are you?" Faith taunted and it worked. Slashing hard and taking advantage of the creature's lack of focus, Faith landed the killing blow. Screaming the creature took one last shot at Faith, but a swift kick downed him altogether. "Wicked cool!" Faith turned to Kate a grin beaming from her face. Her breathing was laboured, but that didn't worry her. "Cops and paramedics on their way. What do we do about them?" Kate pointed to the bodies. "I'll take care of it, you take care of the girl," Faith took off as she shouted the last words to Kate. Blue lights flashed as Faith watched Kate talk to the last of the police on the scene. She knew she should be high-tailing it out of there but she couldn't bring herself to run off without at least saying goodbye to Kate. It had been a long couple of hours answering questions and waiting around while crime scene officers made a record of the scene. Kate had insisted on sticking around while everything was going on. Paramedics had made a good prognosis on the girl and whisked her to hospital not long after arriving. "Hey, Detective Lockley says you came along for the ride and got more than you bargained for," a young uniformed officer said as he came up to Faith leaning against Kate's car. "Yeah," Faith said looking at the cute officer. "Just as well you didn't run into the bastards that did this." "Sick bastards." Faith didn't need to pretend she hated the perpetrators. "Yeah, to do that to a young girl. We're gonna get them." The officer was playing the gallant knight. "Of course you are," Faith reassured. In other circumstances she might have flirted with the guy, god knows she was still wound up over the fight, but he was a cop. "Ready to go?" Kate walked up to the two of them, surprised Faith was playing buddies with the young officer. "You betcha." Faith grinned to the officer. "Good luck." "Thanks." He smiled back and then returned to his patrol car. Faith eyed his butt as he walked away. Would have liked a piece of that, she thought but without regret. When they were back on the road Kate looked over at Faith, amazed at the change in mood from the slayer. She patted herself on the back, taking her along was a good idea. "It's a good thing we went down there tonight," Kate said as Faith closed her eyes. "That girl might not have been alive tomorrow. Thanks to you she's safe." "And you." Faith still felt the tension from the night's activities. There was no way she was up for a friendly chat. "But mainly you. The way you handled yourself was impressive. I'm sorry I doubted your abilities." "Don't worry, you're not the first or last." Kate looked over seeing the tension in the slayer's face. "Well, I wish I were." Kate felt a pang of sympathy for the girl. Somebody, somewhere had hurt this girl. There was no reply, but by now, Kate was getting used to that. "You did good tonight, Faith. You've done more in one night than I've managed in a week." Faith shook her head in disgust. How wrong those words were. "And judging from tonight you've been doing this for a long time." "Then don't judge," Faith snapped. "Sorry," Kate said earnestly. The rest of trip was done in silence. ******************* Kate threw a blanket, sheets and a pillow on the sofa while Faith was in the bathroom. She couldn't remember the last time she had someone stay over. "You going to be warm enough?" She said as Faith emerged from the bathroom. "Sure." Faith surveyed the sofa; she'd slept on worse. "Okay then, goodnight." Kate retreated to her bedroom and fell into bed exhausted. The weekend was nothing like she expected, but then again chasing demons was not the norm. Like the person who previously slept in the bed, she fell into an unsettled sleep. No way Faith was sleeping, not after that sleep in the afternoon and certainly not in her unreleased state. She tapped her fingers on her stomach staring at the ceiling. Going out was not an option, not if she wanted money. She was pretty sure she couldn't sneak in and find Kate's purse without waking her. She was going to have to wait until the morning. Besides the cop had helped her out, least she could do was thank her. Otherwise she might launch a search and rescue and she didn't need that with the Sunnydale cops already on her tail. She tossed and turned for a while, she guessed an hour. It wasn't that she was worried about Kate interrupting her if she decided to take care of her needs; it was that she might get thrown out for it. Maybe she could sneak in and out without her knowing. She was getting up when she heard a cry from the bedroom. She raced and opened the door quietly. "Daddy, Daddy!" Kate was screaming out. "No, no, no, no! Daddy no!" Faith crept over to the bed not sure what to do. "Oh god," the cry wretched from Kate's nightmare. Faith shook her hard, waking Kate immediately. "Hey, Kate." "Faith?" Kate couldn't see her. "Here." Faith knelt by the bed and took hold Kate's shoulder. "You got a set of lungs on you." "I woke you, I'm sorry." Kate closed her eyes, extremely embarrassed, but still feeling the remnants of her dream. "Don't be, I wasn't sleeping." "You weren't?" Kate sat up a little. Faith's hand was still on her shoulder, comforting her. "No, slept this afternoon." Kate's eyes adjusted to the dark and could make the outline of Faith kneeling beside her. "Too wired anyway." "I thought after tonight you would be worn out." Faith shifted her weight to lean on the bed. "Easy fight. Too easy. Not enough to take the adrenaline out of me. Hence the wiring." "Maybe you should do some exercises." Kate was worried she wasn't sleeping. The girl needed all the rest she could get, particularly in her emotional state. Faith smiled in the dark at the comment. She could smell Kate's natural scent and it made her arousal worse. Here she was practically in bed with a cop. She laughed at the thought. "What's funny?" Kate asked. "Exercise." Faith chuckled, her face coming closer to Kate, breathing in more of Kate's delicious smell. Oh god, she thought, I have to back off. "I need more than that." That came out way too seductive. Kate didn't pick it up. "More?" When Faith didn't answer, she thought about it. "A good kill? Release of all that build up? But you had that." "Too easy," Faith whispered. She was too close and tempted. It was too much. She leaned down and kissed the detective, showing Kate exactly how she was feeling. Kate pushed Faith back, hard. "Get out." Faith stood up, the painful expression hidden in the dark. "Sorry, you won't ever see me again," Faith said hoarsely. "I meant my bedroom." Kate sat up fully and turned on the bedside lamp bathing the room in light and showing Faith's revulsion on her face. "No, I know what you meant. Bet you regretting everything right now." Faith flared her nostrils and shook her head. "Faith, I want you to go back to the sofa and I will see you in the morning." Kate brushed a stray hair out of her eyes. "The only thing I regret is that I disturbed you. I thank you for waking me, but I need to get back to sleep." "I'll leave you to it then." Faith turned and walked to the door. "Faith, please be here in the morning," Kate pleaded. "You really want that?" "Yes," Kate said firmly and turned off the light. A few moments later she heard the door close. Hesitantly she felt her lips still feeling Faith's on them. She fell back asleep still thinking about the kiss. Faith finally fell asleep after quietly releasing herself well into the early hours of the morning. But god did it feel good. The next thing was too find someone who could do the same, only without the 'I love you's' she'd had last time. Too bad that cute cop wouldn't be a wise choice; he looked like a guy who would be fun. But then again, he could have been a total non-event like Kate. Talk about going all 'would you like a grateful fuck?' on a cop. She'd nearly blown it. But from looking at Kate's body maybe it would have been worth it. Faith, she told herself, no roll in the hay is worth it. Not even with a babe like her. Thinking of that had fuelled her fantasies in the quiet hours of the morning. How the good Detective Lockley would look…taste…feel…smell…sound when she came. That got Faith off again. Good. Kate breathed in relief when she found a lump sleeping on the sofa the next morning. She snuck over for a look. Faith looked almost angelic lying there on her side. She looked so young and Kate wondered for the first time just how young that might be. Kate moved to the kitchen for a much-needed cup of coffee. She contemplated not going into work today and it was tempting, but damn if she was going to show any weakness to the boys down at the precinct. Having a quick breakfast and getting ready she mentally checked herself. As Kate picked up her car keys, she heard Faith groan and move. Good, she was waking up. "Morning." "You sure that's what it is," Faith mumbled. She burrowed deeper into the sofa. Kate smiled, "I need to talk to you before I go to work. You can go back to sleep later." "Okay," Faith propped her head up at an angle. She opened her eyes taking in Kate's clothes for work. Typical cop. And a hell of a lot different from when she last saw her. "I want you to stay." Faith stared at the detective, "Huh?" "If you want to go I'm not going to stop you. But I would really like you to stay until you decide what you want to do. I'm going to leave some money, I suggest you go shopping for essentials. There's plenty of food in the kitchen." "What makes you think I'm not gonna split." Faith was not quite awake yet. Was she hearing right? "I'm hoping that I'm good enough company," Kate joked. "And you trust me, you know I could loot your apartment if I wanted to." Kate laughed, "I'm sure you could. But I don't think you would. Prove me right." "That a challenge?" Faith looked hard at the cop. She just told a cop that she might rob her and she was laughing? Faith didn't think Kate was that naive to think that Faith wasn't capable of stealing. "Yes. I don't know what time I'll be home, I'll call if it is going to be sometime during the night." Kate picked up her jacket and put it on. "So, you really gonna leave me here?" Faith sat up disbelievingly. "Yes." Kate leaned over and handed her a key. "You'll need this. And this." Kate handed a piece of paper to Faith. "This is my direct line at work." She waited to see if Faith had anything else to say. Nothing came. "Alright, I'll see you later." Kate gathered her things together. "What, no goodbye kiss?" Faith lifted her head and leaned back on the arm of the sofa. "You can kiss my ass," Kate retorted "Don't tempt me," Faith said as Kate left. Damn, the cop was rigid. She needed some loosening up for sure. Sometime later Faith woke up. The clock said 11:25. That was a better time to wake up. She searched the kitchen and put together quite a good meal. Then she moved through the apartment taking it in. Kate's music choices were certainly tame. The cop liked action movies peppered with the occasional comedy or romance. She found Kate's research spread all over the desk. Going through it, Faith came across a reference to Angelus. There was hardly anything enlightening. The notes were missing quite a few critical pieces of information, particularly the happiness clause. Papers and books about vampires, demons littered her desk. The cop had made notes about various demons, their qualities and such. But most of the information was on vampires. Faith noticed various news clippings from newspapers, including recent ones. Very recent, Faith noticed. Faith lifted the front of a manilla folder. Inside was a copy of a police report. One of Kate's cases. Faith then looked further and found an unedited copy. What a difference the two were. One told of a vampire following a pattern for a hundred years, the other of a profiled killer that escaped in the sewers. That case was dated January, only just over a month ago. In fact looking through Kate's notes there wasn't anything going back before January. Not normally Research Girl, Faith was intrigued by this. It explained why Kate was not educated in Slayers or Sunnydale. If she was only new to this demon thing and had first encountered them on a case, it made sense she would be searching for answers. Good cops always did and Faith figured that Kate was a good cop. Going by her reports and profile, Officer Lockley was a young detective for a reason. Bored now she had more than a clue where the detective was coming from, Faith moved onto the rest of the apartment. Nothing much to do and she wasn't about to go through the detective's bedroom, she did have some respect for privacy. So she washed up and went to find a place to shop. ************************************** Kate unlocked the door, hearing the thumping music on the other side. Well that answered her question. She opened the door to be greeted by a blast of some incoherent alternative music. There was no sign of Faith, but she heard movements from near the sofa. Kate walked over to the stereo and turned it down. "I don't think the neighbours are going to be pleased." Kate stood there looking at Faith lying on the sofa. "Why not? Wicked music." Faith closed the magazine she had picked up shopping. "For some." "Yeah, seen your CD collection. It needs a bit of pumping up." "Not with that crap." Kate took off her jacket. "I see you've been shopping." "Yeah, thanks for the money." Faith swung her legs over the side and sat up. "So what did you do all day? Other than annoy the neighbours." "Let see, sleep, shop, that pretty much covers it." "You didn't sell off any of my stuff, then?" Faith frowned before looking at Kate's amused face. "No, all safe and sound. The only thing that's disappeared would be food." Kate walked into the kitchen and grabbed a drink. "Catch any bad guys today?" "Yes." Kate plopped down next to Faith and took a long drink. "How are you doing?" "As opposed to yesterday?" Kate nodded. "Five by five." "Meaning?" Kate looked at Faith "Fine." Faith looked down. "Good. How does pizza sound?" Faith smiled and nodded enthusiastically. Kate ordered on the phone and then disappeared into her bedroom for a while. When she came out she was dressed in casual street clothes and had a handful others. "Here I thought you might need a change." Faith took them with a smile. "Thanks. Not exactly my style though." Kate smiled and answered the door. She paid the deliveryman and took the pizza to the sofa. Faith opened it and took a piece. "You always hungry?" Kate sat back down as she grabbed a slice. "Among other things," Faith said as she chewed. "So, do you go out slaying every night?" "Yes." Faith thought back to a time where she went out on the prowl daily. She sighed inwardly when she thought about how much fun that had been. "Shouldn't you be in Sunnydale, protecting the Hellmouth?" "There's another Slayer doing that," Faith said already reaching for her second slice. "I've decided to move on." Kate suspected it wasn't as simple as that, but Faith was in a good mood and she didn't want to change that. "Well, there's plenty of slaying to do in LA." "Is that an invitation?" Faith asked hopefully. She was beginning to like this town. Enough demons to keep her busy and a place to stay. The only thing worrying her was that Kate was a cop and had access to police records, warrants and APB's. "Yes, for as long as you like," Kate impulsively decided. "I'll have to think about it," Faith said honestly. "But there's something you have to know before we go on." "Yes?" Kate put down her pizza waiting for Faith. Faith looked down, then back up. "I'm not exactly up for a Good Samaritan award." "I figured as much," Kate said quietly. "Sunnydale, big bust. Things got out of hand. Ran into some trouble." Faith stopped, trying to find the words. "Needed to get out of there. I know I've done wrong, but all I want to do now is…" Faith put her head down. Sensing she was losing her Kate gently said, "I'm listening." "Before yesterday I didn't really know what I was doing, but…I know now I'm a slayer…I should be slaying demons. It's who I am. It's what I do." Faith locked eyes with the detective clear communicating her intent. "Then that's what you should do." Kate nodded her head relieved that the girl seemed to be back on track. "That's not gonna put money in my pocket." "But you've done this before?" "Yes, but…it's complicated. Let's just say I was being compensated, that's not gonna happen now." They both fell silent. "We can work on that as we go," Kate finally said. "We?" Faith looked sharply at Kate. "Yes, I'm not letting you do this alone." The words brooked no argument. "What about money?" "I'll make enquires about alternatives and we can go from there." Kate picked up her slice and started eating. "I can't believe you haven't thrown me out." It came out as fatalistic. "Believe it." "I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop," Faith said. "Then stop." "Ain't that easy." Faith ate another bite to hide her pain. Kate sighed, "You're not making it easy for yourself." Faith nodded. No, she thought, I don't deserve it easy. "Slaying tonight?" "Hadn't thought about it," Faith lied. She had been tempted to go out during the afternoon to get in a good fight but decided to wait for night. "I don't know where demons live in this town. I'm sure you would know of popular spots." "Sewers, tunnels, abandoned buildings, that kind of thing. Then there are your high tech demons that like to live in the human world." Like Angel, Kate thought. "So how do you find them?" "Patrol." Faith smiled. "I guess like police do." Kate returned the smile, appreciating the analogy. "I don't have anything to do tonight. I'm coming along." "Now wait a-" Faith stopped seeing the look on Kate's face. She was getting the impression that this demon hunting was personal for Kate. Her father? She was having a nightmare about him. "Why are you doing this?" "What?" "Hunting demons. I mean no offence or anything, but you don't have a clue. You may have stakes and other weapons but there's more to demon fighting than those. So, why are you going in there in the first place? You should leave it up to the professionals." Kate turned away, her eyes closing for a moment. "Something happened, didn't it? To make you believe, to make you want to go demon hunting when you know nothing about them." No answer. "Was it about your father? Turn into a vamp, or -" "Shut it," Kate barked and disappeared into the kitchen. She leaned against the bench with both hands, head down. "You know it wouldn't be the first time that's happened to someone," Faith said following her. "Most just don't know about it." Kate turned. "I said shut up, you have no idea what you are talking about." "But I do. Do you know what a slayer sees? Death, pain and knowing it's too late to save…. People you care about," Faith finished her voice hoarse. Kate stared at Faith and they locked eyes, pain mirrored in each. "Sometimes it's not enough, Kate," Faith continued seeing a kindred spirit, "you don't have enough strength or make one fatal mistake. It will never be enough." "You lost someone." It wasn't a question. "A woman." Faith took a step closer to Kate, sharing her pain. "Sent to teach me the ways of the slayer. The vamp that got her, god," Faith turned her head for a moment, "what he did to her…" Kate nodded as she felt tears pooling. "Is the asshole dead?" "Yeah dusted him, but not before I ran." Faith walked back to the sofa and Kate followed. "So what happened to your father?" Kate took a couple of deep breaths, "Killed by…" She didn't finish, didn't have to. "You got 'em though?" God, Faith hoped the sons of bitches were still not roaming around. "Yes," Kate answered through clenched teeth. "When did this happen?" Kate couldn't answer. "A month ago?" "Try a week." "Jeez, I'm so sorry." Faith watched Kate tremble trying to bottle her feelings. She was no good with this consoling thing, but she had to try. "I know it hurts, but going into demon lairs recklessly is not the answer." "It isn't?" Kate turned to Faith. Faith shook her head. "Not unless you have professional help. But you're lucky, you have me." Faith grinned. "I have you." Kate echoed. "That is, if you want me?" Faith didn't mean it to sound like a come on, but in true Faith style she couldn't help it. "I do," Kate said quietly, not looking at Faith. "Then let's get in on," Faith was in full quipping mode now relishing another encounter with some not so fortunate demon. "Not so fast," Kate could see Faith revving up. "I haven't finished eating and nor have you." Faith rolled her eyes, but gave in and started in on her fourth slice. PART 3 The rain started as they made a sweep of a run down area. They'd been on patrol for a couple of hours, but nothing until now. Faith noticed a lack of people on the streets in an area where there should be quite a few. It didn't bother Faith as she slid along the side of a house. Kate was a few footsteps behind her on guard. Hearing a sound Faith stopped and backed up a step, jolting Kate. "Sorry," Faith whispered reaching around and finding Kate still standing. Faith wanted to charge into the house, she was so ready for a fight. But she had learned her lesson the hard way. She shuddered in memory. Instead, she punched the wall of the weatherboard house. "What are -" Kate started but a hand clamped on her mouth and she found herself staring into Faith's eyes. Putting a finger to her own lips, Faith nodded to Kate and it was returned. Then Faith twisted around and pulled out her stake ready for a fight. It didn't take long before a lone vampire came out checking for the source of the noise. He didn't see Faith before it was too late, he dusted without a sound. "One down," Faith said in Kate's direction. "Let's go." Faith ran around the front and up the rotting stairs. She snuck a peek in the window by the door. Four vamps sitting around a table playing cards. Must be a slow night, she thought. There were probably more, but she didn't think about it. If they were stupid enough to send out single vamps, they were so dustable. She heard Kate behind her creaking up the stairs. So much for stealth Detective, Faith thought. Faith waited, watching the vamps. A couple of minutes later another came into the room and was obviously asking about the one they sent out. "Two outcoming," Faith murmured to Kate who had crept next to her. Kate put her arm on Faith's shoulder in understanding and they got ready. The door opened and Faith didn't let the first even get out the door. Slam, the stake went into his heart. The other crashed out and past Faith, but she let Kate handle it. The game was on. The other two vampires at the table advanced on Faith. She kicked one, sending him back while she went punch for punch with the other. He was strong, probably had just fed. Maybe not so slow, she fleetingly thought as she ducked another punch. She heard Kate come into the main room. Taking a quick look and being satisfied Kate could hold her own, she turned back to be confronted by the two recovered vampires. Two against one, I'll take the odds. The fight lasted quite a while, compared to the previous night's standards, but at the end two humans stood and six vampires were dusted. As Faith stood back her arm coming back up after dusting the last, she turned to Kate who was wiping the dust from her clothes. "Six out of six," Faith whooped her arm coming up for a high-five. Kate slapped her palm, a little out of breath. "Not a bad night." "Let's get out of here." Kate turned and walked out of the building. Faith looked around as an idea came to her. She rummaged around and found what she suspected: money and quite a bit of it. She returned to where Kate was waiting on the porch under shelter. "Found money." Faith showed her a wad of bills. "And a couple of nice rings." She shook her head. "Vamps betting with money, always a hoot." "Good work," Kate was still catching her breath, wishing vampires could be killed the way she had been trained. Hand to hand combat was hard. Faith's youth became an advantage in that situation. "So we done, or is there more butts to kick tonight?" Faith stared out in the rain, which was heavier. Kate looked at her watch. "That's enough." "Too bad, I was just getting warmed." Faith flexed her muscles. She certainly wasn't as tense as the night before, but it didn't matter, she was horny anyway. It was the way she was and it didn't help with another person standing there breathing loudly. At least it wasn't as bad as tag teaming with B. "I'd like to see what a tiring battle is to you." Kate shook her head slightly. "I keep my fitness up and I am still out of breath. You, however…" "It's part of being a slayer. Extra strength, extra stamina. Good for quite a few things, fighting included." "Right." Kate thought about that as she made her way down the steps and back to the car. After towelling down and putting dry clothes, they sat down on the sofa. "I'm going make something," Faith got up and went to the kitchen, "slaying gets me this way." And horny, oh boy, she thought. Kate was too preoccupied with turning on the late night news to answer. Faith came back a few minutes later with a plate stacked with food. The news was still going, covering the latest sport scores. "You're weren't kidding," Kate chuckled at the amount of food on Faith's plate. "I never kid about food," Faith said seriously. She settled on the sofa, pushing Kate's leg out of the way. Retaliating Kate reached across and grabbed a couple of goodies from Faith's plate. "Hey get your own," Faith protested smiling, glad the detective had bounced back from earlier. "You got to be useful for something around here." Kate took a bite making a show. "I'm a lot more useful than this," Faith winked. "I'll believe it when I see it," Kate grinned, enjoying the banter. Faith leaned across and angled her face above hers. "What are you doing?" "Making you believe," Faith put her hand around Kate's head and pulled her to her hungry lips. Kate struggled weakly for a few moments, but Faith was too strong this time. When she felt Kate accept the kiss she pulled back, greedily looking at the cop. "Did it do the trick?" Kate considered slapping the girl for a moment. "No, didn't do a thing." Faith gave her a lazy smile which Kate didn't expect. "Is this a game to you?" "Only if you want to play. Do you want to play, Detective? I could give you a good ride. You'd be begging for more just from-" Kate stood, her arm drawn back. "Go ahead, won't be a first." "I'm not going to hit you," Kate lowered her arm. "I'm going to bed." "Is that an invitation?" Faith stood and levelled her eyes on the detective. "No." She turned the TV off and started across the floor. "Fine, but we both know the truth, Detective. You enjoyed that kiss. You know it. I know it." Faith seductively said, "When you're ready to admit it, I'll be here." The response was the door being slammed. Faith finished her meal, tidied up and got herself off again, this time just to satisfy her fantasies of the detective. ******************* Sleep was again not easy to come by so when Faith woke to the sound of cries again, she tried to block them out. She gave up after a few minutes. She crept into the room and knelt in the same place as the previous night. Kate was shaking in her sleep. "Kate." "So cold," Kate answered. Faith pulled the covers up on her as far as they could go. "So cold." "Kate?" She shook her a little. "Don't go," Kate whispered then mumbled a few more things she couldn't work out. "Kate." Faith this time tried to wake her more forcefully. "Cold." Kate shook as if physically experiencing her subconscious thoughts. Faith shook her again, but it only made Kate grip the arm on her own. "Kate," Faith hissed, experiencing Kate's strength. "What?" Faith wasn't sure if she was awake or not. "Let go of me," Faith tried to get free. "Huh?" Kate moved then, awake. "I might like my arm back." Faith tugged it for emphasis. "Oh." Kate let go, trying to make sense of what was going on. "Why are you here?" "You were dreaming again." Faith moved her head towards Kate's whispering. "Sorry." Kate closed her eyes. Get it together, she reprimanded herself. "Don't apologise. You're still doing the grieve thing. It's better to get it out, or so I've been told." Faith gathered Kate's hand in the own and gave it a squeeze. She didn't know what else to do in the dark. "You probably try so hard to keep it together during the day at work, that it finds a way to come out anyway. Am I right?" Kate felt the warmth of both Faith's words and actions. "Yes." "Me, I went on pretending everything was still wicked cool. You know, nothing had happened." Faith shifted so she was sitting on the floor, her head leaning on the bed. "Even made up stories to tell others. She wasn't gone. No, she'd just gone to England on holiday. Didn't help though." "You got through it?" Kate's only other experience was the death of her mother and she was too young to understand everything. But now, now she knew what kind of world she lived in and how fucked up it could be. "Yes," Faith lied knowing Kate was looking for support not her own disastrous story. "You will too." Faith shook her head at her own do-gooder words. She sounded so fake. The night stillness settled back over the room as the women were drawn into their own thoughts. Kate revelled in the feeling of being cared for, it had been so long. She drifted off trying to cling to the rare feelings. Faith's hand still held Kate's as her breathing changed to a slow rhythm and matched Kate's. The alarm woke both of them. Kate opened her eyes to find Faith's only inches away from hers. The slayer had moved so her back leaned on the side of the bed, her head resting back on it. Her arm rested on top where it ended still encased in Kate's. Faith didn't move and Kate thought she had ignored the alarm until she tried to extract her hand. Faith held on not wanting to give it up. "Faith," Kate broke the morning silence. "Hmm," came the answer. "Aren't you uncomfortable?" Kate looked down and winced in sympathy for Faith's position. "Too warm to move." Faith mumbled still not moving. "How can you be warm? It's early morning." "Warm sleeper." Faith turned her head to face Kate. "Giving you some of my warmth." "What?" Kate rubbed her eyes and stifled a yawn. Faith wasn't making much sense. "Go back to sleep." "I can't, I have to go to work. You can." Kate tried to take her hand out of Faith's again. The slayer wasn't letting go. "Okay," Faith tried to crawl on the bed, but Kate blocked her. "Wait until I'm out of it first." "And spoil the fun," Faith complained smiling. She was certainly awake now, Kate decided. "Try, avoid being slapped." Kate returned the smile. "Okay, but you're missing out," Faith sighed. She let go of Kate's hand, leaving her own feeling cold. "Thank you," Kate said gratefully. Faith looked into the blue eyes and gave her a grin. "Not used to doing the comfort thing, but I'm happy it helped." Faith stood and stretched aware Kate was staring at her. "It did." Kate threw back the covers and waited for Faith to get out. She didn't take the hint, looking back at the detective, distracted by Kate's curves. "Out." "Fine," Faith huffed. "But you've got nothing to be ashamed of." She winked and gave Kate a mental undressing. "Nothing at all," she echoed as she closed the door behind her leaving a flushed Kate. ************************************** The apartment was silent when Kate walked in a little after eight that night. She noticed a note next to the phone. 'Gone slaying. Dinner in fridge. Don't worry you are not rid of me yet. Sit back and relax. Faith.' Kate opened the fridge and found a plate of steak and salad. She put it in the microwave to warm up the meat. Faith must have cooked since Kate knew she had all this in the kitchen. Sitting down and watching some sitcom to take her mind off work, Kate couldn't stop her mind wandering to Faith. Was she okay? Where had she gone? She started worrying and told herself she shouldn't since the last two nights Faith had done ten times better a job at fighting than Kate herself could ever do. Still, as she finished dinner and half-watched the television, her mind kept going back to the girl, hoping she would be home soon. She woke up sometime later, the television screen showing some early morning program. "Hey, still up?" Faith came around to the front of the sofa. "Went to sleep." Kate rubbed her eyes, adjusting to the dim light. "You weren't waiting up for me, were you?" Faith asked half hoping that Kate was doing exactly that. "No," Kate answered, although when she thought about it, she subconsciously did want to make sure Faith was safe. "Tiring day. Any luck?" "Yes," Faith said happily as sat down at the other end. "Two vamps and some weird yellow spotted demon had a run in with me. Bad for them, good for me." "That all?" Kate yawned, not quite awake. "Yeah, went back to the place last night, but no sign." Faith leaned her head back and groaned happily. This slaying in LA was turning out to be a good gig. Being anonymous and not having to report on numbers or techniques to some stuffy Watcher made it much more relaxing. "That's good." Kate grinned at Faith, grateful the slayer was not displaying any of the distress she did on Sunday. "You're going good. I'm proud of you." "Proud. Bullshit," Faith laughed. "No bull." Kate sat up, shaking the last remnants of sleep from her head. "You said last night you're a slayer and you're good at what you do. That's reason to be proud." "Yeah, well, last person who was proud of me is not around any more, so don't get used to it." "I'm not that person," Kate said forcefully. "Thanks for dinner." Glad Kate changed the subject, Faith chuckled, "Needed to keep up my energy, just as easy to cook two steaks." "Well it was nice to come home and not have to cook, so thanks." Kate reached for the remote, turned the TV off and put a lamp on. "I'm off to bed." "Sweet dreams," Faith said seriously catching Kate unawares. "I'll try," Kate smiled gently. Faith nodded and returned an easy grin. Secretly she hoped Kate would need her again. "Goodnight." "You too." Faith made her temporary bed, but couldn't even try to sleep. Kate's smell permeated the sofa from where she had been for several hours. More tired than lustful, Faith tried to put it out of her mind, but it still affected her thoughts before she drifted off. It happened again. Trevor Lockley lying on the apartment floor, exsanguinated from the two puncture wounds in his neck. He lay there. So still. Kate could feel everything as though it was happening in the present. But something occurred that never did before. A hand on her shoulder and a gentle voice calling her name. She tried to see who it was but she was frozen, curled in the corner. The gentle voice continued to soothe her. Instinctively she reached her arms out, the lost little girl wanting to be hugged. And she was. The arms cradled her, gently stroking her back as she whimpered. "Kate?" The voice called again. She recognised it. "Faith?" She called out. "Here." It answered as if Faith was right there holding her. She jolted from her dream finding it true. Faith had climbed over her and was stretched out partly under, partly beside Kate holding her with both arms. "Faith," Kate breathed a sigh of relief. Once again the girl had rescued her from the dream. "This is not what it looks like," Faith tried to keep it light. She removed one arm that had kept Kate's torso on her, but kept the other one slowly rubbing the detective's back. Kate didn't move staying tucked under Faith's chin, her breath gently blowing the dark hair. "Besides it was you who rolled on me." Kate became mindful that their embrace was extremely intimate. Almost as lovers would sleep. She moved a little. "You don't have to move, Kate. It's no trouble." "I'll bet." Kate pulled her head back, making out Faith in the dark. "I didn't mean it like that. Sure, it had crossed my mind but I was a little busy trying to wake you at the time." Faith still rubbed Kate's back feeling the warmth soak through to her hand. "I know you didn't." Kate stayed where she was. Faith was offering comfort and she really needed it. "So much for sweet dreams." "Hmm." "I didn't know if I should wake you. At the end there you quietened down." "That was you," Kate admitted quietly, not sure why. "Maybe I should stay here, that way you might not have any more," Faith joked wishing Kate would take the offer. Kate stiffened in response. In theory it sounded so good, the nightmares were taking their toll. In practice was another story. Faith's free hand started stroking the blonde hair. "I'm not good with all the caring words that I'm supposed to say, mainly because I think they don't mean much. So this," Faith indicated their embrace, "is what I'm doing. Never been much a hugger, but it feels right." "You're going a great job of caring," Kate said. "I wouldn't refuse it." "Good," Faith smiled happy that she was doing something right and Kate wanted her to keep doing it. "Never been much for hugging either, well not in recent history." Faith stopped the motion of both hands content to have someone, no make that Kate, want her comfort and support. "Go back to sleep." "You too." Kate sat up making Faith's hands leave their resting places. "I can do without." Faith moved her body closer. "I'll make sure you get back to sleep." "Faith, it is too late…early to think clearly. I don't want you in my bed right now." Faith didn't move. "Out." "I'm not going to try something, I promise," Faith pleaded, not wanting to leave Kate unprotected from her dreams. Kate was bringing out a protective streak that she never knew she had. "It's not that," Kate answered weary. "I'm sleeping on the floor, then." "Fine," Kate gave in, wanting to get back to sleep. She heard the determination in Faith's voice and felt a little flattered that Faith wanted to look out for her. Faith left the warmth of her bed and returned to the bedroom with a pillow and blanket. After she had settled down on the floor, Faith uttered a goodnight. It was returned and they both fell asleep thinking how nice it was for someone to be close and looking out for them. ******************* For the next night and the next two nights after that, Kate had come home after three in the morning and didn't have a deep enough sleep for the nightmares to make an appearance. Over this time a pattern was established. Faith slept late then trained for much of the day. She took off just before dark to patrol the streets. She had mixed success on the streets. She then lay on the sofa waiting for Kate. She was disappointed she hadn't been needed since spending the night on the floor. When Faith woke mid-morning she wondered why Kate wasn't up yet. Maybe she had a day off. No, she reconsidered, it was Saturday. She'd been here nearly a week. There hadn't even been a hint of the cops looking for her, no news bulletins or anything. She doubted Kate knew anything either, thank goodness. In what was becoming familiar, Faith heard whimpering from the bedroom. Without any hesitation she burst into the room. Kate was just waking up as she made her way to the bed. "Morning," Faith knelt by the bed. "Morning," Kate turned to face her. "You okay?" Faith resisted the temptation to wipe away the tears on Kate's face. She chose to reach for a tissue and gave it to her. "Thanks." Kate took the tissue, embarrassed in the light of the morning. Feeling awkward without the dark to hide their emotions Faith stood up, "I'll leave you to it." Kate wanted her to stay, but simply nodded and Faith slipped out. About twenty minutes she smelled food being cooked. There was a knock on the door a couple of minutes later. "Come in," she answered as she propped her back against the wall. Faith made her way in the room with a tray full of breakfast. "Thought you might want a pick-me-up." She put the tray down on the bedside table. "Now I'm not sure how you take your coffee, so I brought just about everything you can have it in." Kate chuckled, then looked up at Faith. "Thank you," she said gratefully. "It looks wonderful." She surveyed the eggs and toast, her mouth watering. "Don't compliment me until you taste it." Faith shifted her weight. Kate gave her a smile. Taking the fork she jabbed some eggs and took a mouthful. "Good," she said as she swallowed. "You mean I'm not going to give you food poisoning?" Faith acted disappointed. "No such luck." Kate prepared her coffee and took a sip. "You even got the coffee right." Faith smiled. "Where's yours?" "Not ready." Faith didn't look too worried. "Go then," Kate motioned her out. Faith nodded, satisfied she cheered up the cop, and headed out to get her own. Faith was reading the paper and eating cereal when Kate came into the kitchen showered and dressed. She placed the tray on the sink and turned beaming, "Compliments to the cook." Faith looked up, "All gone?" "Every last crumb." Kate came to the table and pinched the sports section. They sat there swapping sections for a while. Finally bored, Faith looked up. "What you doing today?" She asked watching Kate read the headline news. "Hadn't thought about it." "What about some action?" Faith folded the paper in front of her. "Isn't it a little early for that?" Kate also folded her section of the paper "No, I mean the going out and having fun kind of action. There have to be some wild clubs here in LA." Faith enthused. "Well, one you're under drinking age, two I don't think it is a good idea anyway." "Oh come on, Kate. I've being going crazy all week. I NEED some action." There was no doubt what Faith meant. "I'm not getting into this," Kate refused to be baited. "You need a bit of stability in your life and doing what you are proposing is not good, Faith." "Fine," Faith groaned. "I sometimes forget you are the straight-laced cop. Fun for you must be hearing a judge sentence a crim." Kate gave her a stare. "Okay, okay, I get the picture. But that doesn't mean you've ruled out slaying, right?" "No." "Thank fucking goodness for that." "Actually I have something to do today," Kate stood. "Invitation only?" Kate didn't answer. "You got a date?" Faith's voice couldn't hide the crestfallen tone. "No, there's something I need to do," Kate said avoiding Faith's gaze. "You want me there?" Faith sensed this was something about Kate's father. "You know for...whatever." Kate studied Faith's sincere look. "This is not fun." "Doesn't matter." "Okay, get ready," Kate said and walked away quickly. "Do you want me to wait in the car?" Faith asked as Kate parked the car. She looked out into the cemetery grounds. She wasn't used to seeing one during the day. "Yes." Kate nodded and saw the hurt on Faith's face. "I need to do this alone." Faith nodded and reached over with her hand briefly touching Kate's shoulder. Kate nodded her thanks and stepped out of the car. She made her way to where her father lay at peace. The bouquet of flowers was laid at the headstone and she stood up looking down at the marker. 'Beloved Father.' Oh Daddy, she thought, why couldn't we say what we needed to before it was too late. I don't know what I'm doing these days. Taking in a stranger, hunting demons like they were suspects, feeling like crying most of the time, going on trips to strange towns. Why did I have to meet Angel? Maybe all this would go away if I never saw him. A tear made it's way down her face and she fiercely wiped it away. You sure wouldn't like Faith, Kate continued her internal monologue. She's brash and you would have labelled her a no good troublemaker. Maybe she is, but I know she's changed. But she cares about me, Daddy. You said just before you…well that it wasn't good to be alone. I didn't want to listen to it then, but I know it now. Faith makes me feel less alone. She also has had some loneliness in her life, lost people as well. Maybe we can be lonely together, I don't know. She's the only person who seems to understand I don't need pity or talking behind my back, I need a friend. For the first time in a long while, I'm allowing myself to give in to my needs. It feels good. Satisfied that she had got that out, even if it was to a grave, Kate closed her eyes for a few moments before heading back to the car. "You must have loved him," Faith said as Kate closed the door and nodded as an answer. "Was he a good father?" "Yes," Kate left the word hanging "But?" "He loved my mother so much that when she died I became a constant reminder. It was hard on him…me as well." "So different," Faith mumbled. "What?" Kate fumbled with the keys in the ignition. "We're so different." Faith didn't look at Kate. No kidding she thought, she's a cop and I'm a murderer. "Why do you say that?" Kate thought they had much in common. "No reason," Faith shrugged hoping Kate didn't question her. "Where is your family, Faith?" Kate took her hand off the keys. "Long dead." Kate gave her an empathetic look. "Don't be sorry, weren't that close, unless you call hands colliding with my body tough love." "I'm sorry," Kate drew out the breath. She'd seen victims of abuse and put away some creeps away for it, but knowing Faith was one stirred up so much more emotion in her. "Don't be, I don't want your pity," Faith slammed her fist on the dash. "I didn't mean it that way," Kate defended. "What way did you mean it?" Faith wasn't convinced. "I…I guess…. Hell. I wish I could go back in time and stop it from happening," Kate finished. Faith laughed, "That's the weirdest response I've ever heard to that." "Yeah well," Kate gave a small smile, "doesn't stop it from being true. I guess I've seen first-hand what kind of bastards do things like that and I know how strong the victims have to be." Kate turned and placed a hand on Faith's. "So I guess I meant it in a understanding kind of way, even though I'm sure I'll never totally understand what exactly a victim goes through. If that makes any sense?" "Yeah," Faith nodded so aware of Kate's reassuring hand-hold. "I don't normally tell people because I get those pitiful looks. Drives me mad. But you actually knew what to say." They shared shy smiles. "Home?" Kate asked turning the keys and starting the car. "Drive on." Faith said, relieved that Kate didn't want coddle her. Maybe they weren't so different after all. PART 4 After lunch, Kate settled down at her desk doing research. Faith sat on the sofa, bored. Extremely bored. "I'm going out," she finally said. "Where?" Kate looked up from the report she was reading. "Need some action." Faith reached for her jacket. "I thought we talked about this." "Not that kind." Faith smiled. "I need some exercise, training whatever. Yesterday I found a small time gym slash boxing centre. Looks good and they don't have a joining policy," Faith joked. "You should come down sometime." Her smirk appeared just thinking about Kate amongst the heavy and tattooed men down there. Kate gave her a glare. "I would probably have to arrest over half the men down there." "Pretty likely." Faith continued smirking. "If you're looking for a training partner I wouldn't mind." Faith opened her mouth but Kate continued, "But not down there." "No offence, Kate, but I don't think it's good idea. I might hurt you." That was the last thing Faith wanted. "I'm not a weakling," Kate said indignant. "No, I know. I've seen you fight. It's not that. I have a lot of strength and sometimes not much control." "I could help you with that," Kate was determined to see this through. "Maybe another time," Faith shook her head. "Is there something wrong?" Kate asked sensing another one of Faith's mood swings. "Come here." Faith wanted to put this to bed and in more ways than one. Kate stood and faced Faith so they stood were a couple of feet apart. Faith threw a slow punch, which Kate deftly deflected. Then she threw a faster one, also deflected. Kate got the idea and went on the attack throwing a punch that was not only blocked by Faith's open palm, but it forced Kate to take three steps back as Faith hard pushed on her fist. She looked at Faith wide eyed. "That is only a taste of what I'm capable of," Faith said taking a step back. "Speed that up five times, add aggression and you could be in a lot of trouble." "What about the men?" "They are specially trained in heavy hand to hand combat, which you aren't. And not to go all sexist, but they are a lot stronger than you are. We'll both be better off if I just trained down there." "Have you ever thought I need the training too?" Kate crossed her arms. Faith shook her head. "I don't want to encourage you." Kate raised her eyebrows. "I thought I was the adult here." Faith chuckled. "Don't you think it makes sense for you teach me a few things to help increase my chances of being successful." Faith tilted her head a little, mentally conceding the point. "Maybe." Kate gave her another glare. "Okay, I'll teach you a few moves, but I'm not sparring with you." They spent the better part of an hour going through moves, in particular killing blows needed for demons. When Kate decided she had enough she sat down on the sofa, her muscles a little tired from the prolonged exercise. "What a drink?" Faith asked going into the kitchen for one herself. Kate called out a yes and soon Faith came back with two cool glasses of water. "Just what I needed," Kate said leaning her head back. "Me too," Faith relaxed. "Really? I would have thought you needed more than water." Faith looked across at Kate taken off guard. "No. Not this time." She had felt aroused, spending all that time being close to Kate, but she wasn't worked up now. "What's different?" Kate was almost disappointed she hadn't had an effect. "No excitement or danger. No challenge." Faith shrugged. Kate nodded. "Of course if you were to make it so, I might warm up a bit." Faith's voice turned seductive. "That right?" Kate gave as good as she got. "You up for it?" Faith smirked. "The real question is, are you?" Kate put down her glass and turned front on to Faith. "Any time," Faith spread her arms in a come-and-get-me poise. She knew she shouldn't do this and despite her earlier decision not to spar, she couldn't turn it down. She'll hold back for Kate's sake. "Last one standing wins," Kate stood and motioned Faith to do the same. "I'm so gonna wipe the floor with you," Faith sneered but then smiled to show she wasn't too serious. "We'll see." Kate moved to the clear space in the living room where they had been training. "Wanna make a bet?" "Stakes?" "Cop made a pun, ha ha." Faith walked slowly around, sizing Kate up. "I'll do all the washing and cleaning for the next week." "Confident are you?" Kate raised her eyebrows. "I'll let you have my bed for a week." "With you in it?" Faith leered. "I'll give up my bed for a week," Kate corrected. Faith nodded and they prepared for the small-scale battle. Faith predictably swung first, giving Kate a good chance of blocking it. She did. "Just a warm up," Faith smiled then swung again. Kate managed to grab Faith's hand and pulled her hard into her body. Faith felt herself crash into the detective's chest. Not expecting this unusual manoeuvre, she only just stopped herself going down when Kate tried to take her legs from under her. "Not so fast," Faith slipped out of the hold and turned ready for more. But being crushed to Kate like that wasn't all that unpleasant, she thought to herself as she looked towards Kate's breasts. Focus, she reminded herself. They circled each other a couple of times before Faith went on the attack again. Kate did the same manoeuvre as before, but this time Faith took advantage of her momentum pushing Kate back. Kate stumbled but managed to steady, still holding Faith's arm. Faith used the time to steady her own body and heart rate. Kate was warming her up and not just in the fighting sense. This time Kate let go of Faith's arm and took a swing. Faith decided turnabout was fair play and captured Kate's torso with both hands landing on her hips after avoiding the blow. This was a dangerous game, Faith thought, but she didn't know if Kate was playing for an unspoken prize or if she really wanted to get out of housework for a week. "You're definitely getting me hot," Faith's voice whispered next to Kate's ear. "Must be all that danger." Kate quipped as she tried again to take legs from under her. It didn't work but it did free her from Faith's hold. "Or your body being so close to mine," Faith moved forward, but didn't attack. "I can feel your heat too. Getting that low-down tickle yet?" "No, I'm just working a little harder than you," Kate masked her desire. But Faith could see straight through her. It was time to end this game. "I think you're enjoying this as much as I am." Faith stepped close staring into Kate's eyes. "It's the thought of you having to wash all week." Kate struck out at Faith's gut, amazed she connected. Faith groaned a little and stepped back. Kate never hesitated to press her advantage going for the endgame, but Faith recovered, ducked and twisted around. Kate was unbalanced; all Faith had to do was tackle Kate's back. "Faith wins," she whooped as they both crashed down, Faith landing on Kate's back. Kate rolled her eyes and groaned. They lay there catching their breath and enjoying the moment of closeness. "You might want to get up now," Kate said groaning. Faith slowly got up and watched Kate rub the small of her back. "I didn't hurt you, did I?" Faith worriedly knelt by her. "No," Kate stood not wanting any more humiliation. "The bed is yours." She went into the bathroom and shut the door. Kate didn't have a chance to use her new skills that night. They came home in a good mood after Faith had told her a couple of hilarious stories during her time as a slayer. "I gotta hand it to ya, Kate." "What?" Kate watched Faith try to find a good radio station on her stereo, well Faith's definition of good anyway. "I've been here a week and still want to stay." "That's not normal?" "Hell, no. The only time I've stayed somewhere more than a few day is when there's been good sex involved and sometimes even that wasn't enough." Faith found a station that she thought Kate would tolerate and turned the volume up a little. "So what's keeping you here, as it obviously isn't sex at all?" Kate's eyes followed Faith's path as she made her way to sit next to her. "Who says it isn't? What you do think you do in my mind, Detective Lockley? It sure ain't police work." "How am I?" Kate said not surprised at all. Just thinking about Faith thinking about her did things to her heart rate. "I don't have much to go on, but you do the job alright." Faith smugly grinned. "Just alright? Must be the company, doesn't do anything for me." Kate grinned back. "No, I don't think that's the problem at all. You need to loosen up. I can show you how." Faith winked and gave her a seductive smile. "Is that a come on?" "You know it is." Faith moved forward putting her weight on her arms pressed against the sofa. "Let me show you how good you could feel. Take away all those painful memories for a while." Kate stood up enraged, "I don't need a pity fuck." "Hey," Faith moved back, her head rocking to face the ceiling. She'd blown it, she was sure Kate was gonna go for it up until now. "I'm sorry." "I think it's bed time, if you don't mind." Kate retrieved the blankets from the side of the sofa. "I'll take the sofa," Faith moved to take the blankets from her. "And I don't want any further pity. I'll make good on our bet." Kate threw the blankets down. "Okay," Faith said slowly, cursing herself for reading the situation wrong. "See you in the morning." She went into the bedroom and closed the door. Sitting on the bed, she held her chin in her hands and let out of sigh. When she met Kate, she thought she was this righteous cop, who just happened to know about demons. The more she learned about her, the more she actually cared about her. She admired so many things about the determined cop. And that person wanted Faith's company. That was so much more than she had, ever. At first, she wanted Kate, now she wasn't sure she could handle her. Sure, she was still hopelessly attracted to her, but Kate's willingness to play, then back off was confusing her. She didn't want to just screw Kate now, that would ruin everything they had built up in the last few days, but the next step after that was a relationship of some sort. That was something Faith neither needed nor could risk. It would only lead to hurt and pain. ************************************** Kate was called down to the precinct the next day for an interrogation of a repeat offender she arrested a few months before. She was relieved that she wouldn't face Faith for another few hours or so. Last night she had been crazy to think she could play with Faith and win. The girl's seduction routine was unmistakably not a new one. Yet, she was falling for it. It would have been so easy to let Faith take her to a place where she would have forgotten about demons, death and her unravelling life. Ironically, Faith seemed to be the anchor at the moment. A girl who had possibly seen it all. She was drawn to the slayer and it was taking all her will not to fold to Faith's enticing advances. There was the question of Faith's motives. Did she just want sex and if so was it because of attraction, gratitude or pity? Or was there something else developing between them? Kate felt a bond had been created as they continued to share their hardships with one another. The concern and fondness displayed by Faith during the period after her nightmares made Kate feel like she hadn't for a long time. Still there was a sensual air hanging over them for much of the time they were together. "Detective Lockley?" An officer came to her desk. The officer shuffled his feet for a moment. "Yes?" "I just want to say how sorry I am about your father. I didn't really know him, but he was a good cop." The officer said nervously. "Thank you," Kate said stoically. They both stared for a moment before the phone ringing saved any further awkwardness. "Detective Lockley." "Next time you disappear at least leave a note. I didn't know you worked Sundays." Faith's voice came through the receiver. "I gave you this number for emergencies, not to check up on me." Kate sat back in her chair, her eyes giving the once over to the nearly empty room. "I was worried." "I'll leave a note next time then," Kate lowered her voice. "So you working?" "I'll be back by lunch. Bye." Kate hung up pleased Faith was concerned enough to check up on her. The night on the sofa wasn't the most comfortable, maybe contributing to her not having a nightmare. She packed up her papers and was about to walk out when the phone rang again. "Detective Lockley." "Hi, Kate." "Angel, now is not a good time," Kate said ready to hang up on the vampire. "I have a case I need help on." "Is this a real case or one of your evil things?" "Ah, er," Angel stumbled. A voice interrupted from the background 'tell her we want to see a rap sheet'. Presumably Cordelia. "I need to see a criminal record." "No can do, you should know that Angel. Now if you excuse me I was just leaving." This time she did hang up. Damn Angel, she shouted in her mind, couldn't he leave her alone after what had happened. She headed out to her car, trying to keep it together. Not wanting to face Faith like this, she took a drive through the city. By the time she got back, Faith had taken off, probably slaying. Early in the morning she heard her come in, but she pretended to be asleep when Faith checked on her. The next day Angel phoned again. By the time Angel had restated his request, Kate was pissed off. "Angel, I thought I made myself clear yesterday. Maybe things like you need it spelled out word for word. I don't want to hear from you again. I'm not willing to help you any longer in any investigations you may have. In case you've forgotten, know I haven't. Just your voice makes me sick." She bashed the phone down attracting the attention of Detective Harlan. "Bad day?" He asked coming over to her desk. The guy was actually pretty decent apart from his infatuation with her. "Could say that." Kate scratched her forehead. "You coming down to the Blue Bar after work? My shout." "I don't think so, it might encourage you." Kate raised her eyebrows. "Come on, Lockley. I promise I'll play the gentleman." "I doubt you even know the meaning of the word." "Fine, but if you change your mind…" Harlan walked back to his desk. Kate shook her head, did she have it stamped on her forehead that she was lonely? Kate did eventually make her way down the Blue Bar and found a few fellow cops to argue with about some injustice in the justice system. She downed a couple of beers and made her way back to her apartment. She collapsed into her bed not long after coming home. Movement of the bed woke her up just after two. "Faith?" She hoped. "Kate?" Faith stopped undressing though she hadn't gotten past her shoes. "What are you doing?" Her mind couldn't understand why Faith was in her room. "I could ask the same." Faith sat down making the bed bounce. Kate turned on the lamp and looked at Faith, still not understanding. "The bet." "Oh," Kate's eyes went wide finally with comprehension. "Sorry." She started to draw the covers back. "Stay." Faith put a hand on her shoulder. "No, I'll go." She sat up straight. "Have you been drinking?" Faith asked her hand steady on the shoulder. "Just a couple of beers after work. How can you tell?" "Wicked obvious." Faith gave her a smile. "Look, stay. You're already here and it's no problem for me. Okay?" Kate closed her eyes. "Kate?" Faith captured her face and waited until she saw the blue eyes. She sighed when she saw tears pooling in them. "Tough day?" Kate nodded trying to keep her tears from spilling. "Come here." In an action that seemed so natural, Faith pulled her close, hoping Kate would accept her offer. When she felt two arms secure on her back she gave herself a small victory. "Sorry," Kate laughed weakly her tears making their exit. "Don't be stupid. I know what it's like to have no one and I don't want you to ever feel like that." Faith held her protectively and pulled her nearer resting her chin on the warm shoulder. Kate herself let go, savouring the contact. She sobbed quietly while Faith held her tight determined to ride out the storm with Kate. She made Kate scoot over so she could draw her legs up on the bed. The sobbing continued. When the tears wouldn't spill out any more, Kate still clutched at Faith's jacket not wanting to give up the haven. "Feel better?" Faith's breath blew on Kate's hair. "Yeah," Kate wiped her eyes with her hand. "You want me to stay?" Faith gently shifted so she was leaning against the wall with Kate still tucked leaning on her chest. Kate didn't answer, but moved her hand down to Faith's waist for a better hold. "I have a don't ask, don't tell policy." She felt Kate chuckle. "You had me worried there. I don't want you drinking because you had a shit day." Faith's harsh voice made Kate peer into the dark eyes. "I know what it is like to live with an alcoholic, what it does to people." "Your father?" "Mother, actually. I don't ever want to see you like that." Faith's words rasped in her ear. "Okay." Kate nodded and resolved to never drink in front of Faith other than the occasional beer or wine. "Go back to sleep," Faith moved Kate so she was lying on her side. She took off her jacket and laid down facing her. "If you don't want me here, you better kick me out now." Kate's eyes were closing, exhausted from the early morning activities. She didn't respond, so Faith put her arm around the detective's slim waist. Kate rolled over and Faith pulled closer spooning her. As Kate fell asleep she thought she hadn't felt this good in a long time. Kate awoke about ten minutes before her alarm and felt Faith behind her. God, it felt wonderful to be held like this most of the night. Not that she would admit it to Faith. She lay there listening to Faith's breathing and feeling the warm hand resting lightly on her stomach for those heavenly minutes. The alarm rudely disturbed the peace. She rolled over and turned it off, her arm landing around the jean-clad waist and coming face to face with Faith. "I know you're awake," she teased when Faith didn't move. "Don't want to be," Faith mumbled. "Pretend I'm not." Kate studied the relaxed face. "Too late." Faith snuggled further into Kate's body, "You smell nice." "Hmm," Kate liked this feeling and Faith's mood. "I could stay here all day." Faith's hand started rubbing the strong back. "I have to go to work." Kate gave into her desire to enjoy Faith's mini massage. "I know. Bad guys to catch." Faith opened her eyes for the first time, steeling her gaze on Kate. "Tell me, Kate, does this feel as good to you?" "Yes," Kate drew out the word, unable to deny the truth any longer. "I'm pleased I didn't throw you out." "Yeah, that would have spoilt the fun." Faith smiled. "I think I could die happy right now." "Wow," Kate breathed her eyes blinking a couple of times when she spotted Faith's open and vulnerable expression. "I know and we haven't even done the deed." Faith closed her eyes against the flood of emotions in her head. "Faith had you ever made love?" Kate propped herself up on an elbow. "Of course. What do you think I'm all talk and no show?" Faith moved onto her back. "No, I don't mean sex, I mean making love." "That's for people that believe in the fantasy of true love," Faith scoffed. "You don't believe in love?" Kate sighed. "Do you even know what love is?" "Love is something that hurts, so I stay clear." Faith moved herself away from Kate's touch. "I too know what that feels like. But love isn't all bad." "You're starting to sound like B." Faith strained to sit up. "Who?" "Cut the crap with all the lovey-dovey shit, Kate. I don't need love, I don't need anyone but myself." Kate pushed herself into a sitting position and levelled her eyes at Faith, "I used to think that too, but it gets lonely." "And you deal," Faith shrugged. "I learned a long time ago that people are always looking out for themselves. Love is just a label to use when you like someone enough to screw them more than a couple of times, but all people want in relationships is sex. It all comes back to that." "What about what you've done for me this last week? What I did for you? Or is this some elaborate act to get into my bed.?" "I'm here aren't I," Faith smirked. "So if I told you I didn't want that from you would you still be here?" Kate stared hard at her. "Screw you," Faith jumped out of bed. "Faith." Kate called stopping her. "A few moments ago you told me you were happy, despite not having sex. That doesn't have to be a bad thing." Faith whipped herself around an anguished look confronting Kate. They locked eyes each daring the other to look away. "Yes." "Yes, what?" Kate watched her come back to the edge of the bed. "Yes, I would still be here." Faith knelt on the bed and found herself in another embrace, this time one of joy. "So would I," Kate said cradling Faith's body. "But that's not what's going on here is it?" Faith drew back, inexplicably nervous. Kate shook her head then wrapped her arms around Faith bringing them together in a tighter embrace. Never thinking it would Kate to make this move Faith became extremely turned on by it. Their lips met gently, both exploring tentatively, before Faith drew back slightly, liking what she found. Her tongue thrust out running over Kate's lips. She moaned when she felt a second tongue come out and play. Their bodies drew closer as their tongues continued to dance. "Oh god," Faith breathed as they parted. She started giving little kisses over Kate's neck and face. "Like the real thing?" Kate arched her head back as she held onto Faith tightly. "Understatement of the year," Faith whispered in her ear, then gently bit down on the soft skin. Kate moaned loudly, causing Faith to do it again. "We can't do this now," Kate moved her hands under Faith's top and reached up to scrape the bra. "I have to go to work." "Don't think," Faith jumped as Kate brushed a nipple, "do." "Faith," Kate meant to warn her but it came out breathless. Faith took that as a good sign and worked her way down to her collarbone, nibbling and licking the soft skin. "We've got to - ooh." She felt Faith nibble on a sensitive spot. "Don't you dare give me a hickey there." She heard Faith laugh, but the kisses moved a little lower. They explored for a few more minutes before Faith stopped and stared at Kate's expression. Full of desire. "I need you, Kate. Now." She moved in and kissed her again while her hands strayed to Kate's top, lifting it. Kate's own hands were still moving over her clothed breasts. "Work." Kate broke their lips, her head spinning. "After." Faith's hands moved over bare breasts, cupping them and moving her thumbs closer and closer to their centre. When they reached there Kate pushed herself into the hands, her own fumbling to unhook Faith's bra desperately wanting to return the favour. "I need to go." Kate protested weakly as she turned her head away slightly. "Off. You need," Faith kissed her ear, "to go off." Another kiss. "I can do that for you." With a quick movement one of Faith's hands was buried between her legs. Feeling, exploring the wetness. "I knew you smelled good," Faith drew her hand out and proceeded to sniff then lick it. "Mmm." "Come on then," Kate groaned giving in to the erotic display Faith was putting on for her. Clothes went flying and Faith pinned the detective down studying the flushed and wanton face. She smiled, anticipating how good having sex with the detective was going to be. When she couldn't hold back any more she brought her body down on Kate's and rolled them over. "Where did you get that?" Kate looked down to a recent scar on Faith's stomach. "Fighting." Faith's hands roamed over the detective's back, moving lower. "Looks bad." Kate was distracted as a hand landed between her legs. "Happened a long time ago, I'm five by five." Faith moved her hand and caused Kate to forget everything else. Time became irrelevant as they lost themselves to the pleasure they were eliciting from each other. "So," Kate breathed out raggedly feeling Faith come to a rest on top of her, her fingers still buried in her and the smell of sweat and sex heavy in the air. "Hmm." "Hmm?" Faith moved her fingers a little and a shiver ran through her lover. Lover? Faith asked herself, jeez. "How can I even get up let alone go to work." Kate let her fingers walk over Faith's back, feeling the solid muscle move underneath. "It was that good?" Faith moved her head so she could gaze into those intense eyes. "Do you even have to ask?" Kate saw uncertainly flash over Faith's face. "For all that bragging, Faith, you certainly live up to it." Faith lazily smiled before giving her a passionate kiss. "Never knew a cop could be so good." "No, I'm just a straight-laced cop that only has fun at sentence hearings." Kate smiled as she felt Faith finally pull out of her and cosy up to her side. Faith pulled the covers up and gave her breast a kiss before snuggling down on it. "Faith, I'm already going to be late." "Car trouble. Heavy traffic. Troublesome neighbour," Faith murmured taking Kate's warm hand in hers and resting it on Kate's stomach. "You've probably never been late a day in your life, they'll cut you some slack." "When I said straight-laced I didn't mean it literally. I do have a few flaws." "Hmm, I plan on finding them all." Faith started exploring Kate's body again. When Kate groaned, Faith chuckled. "There's one fatal flaw. How many does the good detective have?" "Many," Kate struggled to get out the word, "but you'll have to find them later." "Is that a promise?" Faith looked up hopefully. "Yes, I promise you." Kate squeezed their hands. "What about you?" "I'm staying, Kate. And not just because of great sex." Faith couldn't stop smiling. "Okay then." They kissed one last time, or few times, before Kate made it out of bed. Faith looked her up and down as she put on a robe. Kate turned to an intimate stare and she gave one back. "Don't tempt me," Faith said closing her eyes, "or you won't make it past the door all day." Kate raised her eyebrows and made a movement as if she was going to flash Faith. "Go on," Faith encouraged. "You just told me not to," Kate grabbed her clothes and left the room. Faith grinned to herself, looks like she had met her match. She heard Kate moving around the apartment and the shower turned on. She lay back smiling, thinking about what Kate was doing in there. Washing her body… Okay Faith don't go there, well not at the moment anyway. She stared at the ceiling luxuriating in the bliss. No, it wasn't just great sex, she thought. Certainly wasn't love either. "What are you smiling about?" Kate came back in dressed, making Faith pout. "You." Faith smirked lifting her head. "I should hope so," Kate came over to the bed. "What are you doing today?" Kate took her ID out of a drawer. "Thinking about you. Thinking up ways to tell you how much I've missed you when you come home." Faith winked. "I'll try to be back on time, but I'll ring if something comes up. Okay?" Kate leaned over the bed, using an arm to support her. "Very okay," Faith drew up so their lips were inches apart. "Kate," she whispered, "you five by five with…things?" Never had Faith considered the needs of another person, but this was different. "Yes. We'll talk later." "Talk wasn't what I had in mind," Faith stuck her tongue out and licked Kate's lips lightly. "We can do both," Kate closed the gap between them. As Faith's tongue sought out her own, Kate reluctantly pushed herself off the bed. "Later." "Can't wait," Faith said catching her breath. "You're one sexy woman, Detective Lockley." She called as Kate made her way out the door. PART 5 "Detective?" Kate looked over her shoulder at an officer. "There is someone here to see you." Kate nodded and saved her work on the computer. "Detective." "Wesley, right?" Kate nodded to the dark haired Englishman. "Yes, may I speak to you?" He shuffled his feet. "I told Angel yesterday I wanted nothing to do with him." Kate crossed her arms and leaned back on her desk. Her good mood was evaporating quickly. "Yes, I understand that. However, I feel that it may not prudent to do this." "In case you've forgotten," Kate hissed leaning her head forward, "it was my association with him in the first place that caused trouble." Wesley retreated a little under the probing gaze. "I've made up my mind so you can tell your boss that he need not bother again." "I understand that you would be upset-" Kate laughed hollowly. "But you must know that it was not Angel's fault about the unfortunate consequences resulting." "You defend him like he was a person, but we both know the truth. He is not an innocent, he is a mass murderer. So, don't go telling me about how good he is. HE, he is not blameless and I will not let another close to me die because your boss decides he is a law unto himself," Kate's voice was low but cutting. "I know he is remorseful for what happened, and I'm not just talking about the last couple of weeks. He has done much good since his soul was returned to him." "What did I just say to you?" Kate stood up straight her eyes boring into his. "Do not defend him. I've read enough to know who he is. Maybe he is trying to help, but it will never ever make up for the damage and terror he has caused in this world." "You may have read some, Detective, but you don't know the whole story." "And you do?" Kate returned her legs to lean on the desk. "I've done extensive research on Angel. At first I wasn't convinced of his benevolence, especially given past circumstances, but I see now how he is trying redeem himself." Kate looked at him for a moment. "It was you who gave me those papers?" Wesley glanced away sheepish. "What do you know about Sunnydale?" "Quite a lot." "Mind sharing why you gave them to me?" Kate relaxed a little. "I thought it might help you … make sense of things," Wesley didn't look at her. "I went up there and had a look around." "Really?" Wesley seemed surprised. "Did you find anything?" "Enough." Kate idly speculated about whether Wesley and Faith had known each other. "Do you know what a Vampire Slayer is?" Wesley uneasily coughed, "Yes." "You wouldn't happen to have any research material about them?" Kate pried further sensing Wesley's unwillingness to talk. "In general?" "You know of a particular slayers?" This was getting interesting, she thought. "There are a few accounts of slayers throughout history," Wesley decided to play it safe. "What about current slayers?" "They're identity should remain a secret," Wesley side stepped. "But you do know the slayer's identity?" "Yes, what do you know about slayers?" "They are sent to Sunnydale?" Kate asked pretending to be innocent. "At the moment," Wesley said. "So what happens if they leave the town?" "Buffy…sorry the Slayer would never do that. It is their life-long duty." Who the hell was Buffy? Kate asked herself. And where did Faith fit into this? She wasn't prepared to let the man know that she knew Faith. "Thank you…for the information. However it doesn't change my view on Angel." Kate looked at the man in kindness. "I'm sure if you changed it, we would be more than willing to help." Kate nodded. "Now you must excuse me, Cordelia has given us a rather unusual case to handle." "Unusual?" Kate asked cursing her inquisitive nature. "Yes, a divorce." He smiled and Kate chucked softly. "Not exactly your forte." Wesley nodded. "Good luck, Detective." "You too," Kate said and watched him walk out while thinking hard about the Englishman's words. She wanted to bring it up with Faith, but getting her to talk about her past without infuriating her was going to be hard. "New boyfriend?" Harlan approached her. "No, though it's none of your business." Kate gave the detective a scowl. "It's just that you seemed in a good mood this morning." Harlan went on ignoring the scowl. "I hadn't seen your face yet." Kate sat back down dismissing him "Coming down to the bar again?" "Not with you." Kate looked down at the information she was entering in to the computer. "We had fun last night, Kate." Kate looked up at him, a sneer on her face, "Why can't you understand I don't want anything to do with you outside of this place." Harlan stared at her then walked away in defeat. Kate sighed, shaking her head. ******************* As Kate unlocked the apartment door, she could hear soft music in the background. One from her CD collection if she was not mistaken. "Hey." Faith came from the kitchen dressed in black leather pants and a sheer halter-top. Faith saw her giving her the once over. "I was going to go naked, but I thought you might want to undress me yourself." "Good choice," Kate dropped her papers on the table. Faith closed the distance and practically pulled Kate into her arms giving her one good going over with her lips. "What's with the music?" "Thought I might give it a try," Faith said offhandedly. "I have something for you." "Another earth shattering climax?" Kate pulled her jacket off and threw it over a chair. Faith smiled. "Good idea, but not right now." "Thought you couldn't wait." Kate advanced on her. "I do have some self control," Faith pointed out before she was caught up in another kiss. "However," she arched her head as Kate's lips searched out new places, "it…isn't…much." When their lips separated again Faith had enough willpower to take a step back. "Go sit down." Kate did as was asked while she watched Faith bring a parcel out from the kitchen. "Now it isn't much, actually quite crappy, but I wanted to get you something because…I don't know." She nervously held it out to Kate. "Thank you." Kate smiled, forgetting the trials of the day. She took the rectangular package from Faith, who stood there nervously waiting. Opening it, she guessed it was a book. She flipped it over so she could read the title: 'Dreams & Nightmares: How to Manage Them.' She looked up at Faith, a big grin lighting up her face. "Told you it was crap," Faith said looking at the book in slight disgust. "No, Faith it's not." Kate put the book down and took her in her arms. "Sure, I'm not exactly into the 'self help' thing, but who knows it might have a few helpful suggestions." She brought her hands to Faith's cheeks cradling them. "Nothing you could ever give me is crap." Kate pulled Faith to her and gave her a gentle kiss. "Especially when it is given to show that you care. As the phrase goes, it's the thought that counts. Just knowing you care is enough." "If you say so." Faith pulled back. "Faith, you couldn't have done better. You answered any doubts I had today." "You had doubts?" Faith frowned. Kate scratched her forehead. "I didn't mean it like that. It's just that…" "I know, give me the talk. Faith, I enjoyed this morning, but I wasn't thinking straight, I was thinking gay." "I wasn't going to say that at all." Kate moved closer, but Faith recoiled. "Yes, I don't usually have sex with a woman, but I'm not worried about that." Kate took a deep breath, "I was going to say that I had thought about you just wanting to get me in bed. But I know now you care about more than that." "Whatever." Faith looked right into those blue eyes and couldn't stand to see the pain in them. "You don't regret it?" "No, best part of my day." "Yeah, well it's not every day you get to writhe under a slayer. That extra strength and stamina comes in real handy." Faith smirked and wrapped her arms around Kate's waist. "You're still packing." Kate moved back and undid the gun holster, throwing it on the sofa. "Better?" "I don't know, I like a woman with a weapon." "Fight this," Kate stuck her tongue out and crushed their lips together. Faith expertly moved them into the bedroom where she started undressing the rest of her detective. A couple of hours later Faith wrapped her arms around Kate and moved her so they were facing each other on the sheets. "Where did you learn to do that!" Faith breathed out. Kate laughed in response. "If I knew it could be this good with a cop I might have tried it before now. Must be all that pent up aggression." "Look who's talking." Kate tucked a stray hair behind Faith's ear. "You got a mouth on you and a tongue too." Faith grinned. "I aim to please." "Well, you're definitely hitting the right targets." They lay there for a while, occasionally kissing and caressing. "Dinner," Kate said as she heard Faith's stomach rumble. When they were both sitting at the kitchen table and starting on their meal, Kate decided to delve into Faith's past. "I found out who gave me the information about Sunnydale." She stole a glance at her lover's expression. "Yeah?" Faith tried to sound uninterested. "Yes, turns out it was the people I thought it was." Kate noticed Faith was getting a little agitated. "People?" Faith wondered who down in LA knew about Sunnydale. "A private investigation firm that I use for information sometimes." "Like a source?" Faith felt relieved. Kate nodded. "And they know about demons?" "Yes and they're not the only ones." "Who else?" "There's a law firm who actually defends these creatures in court." "You're kidding!" Though Faith could see she wasn't. "I guess they don't ask for payment in the usual way, then." "Afraid not. Who knows how many demons they have in their back pockets? There's nothing these guys wouldn't do to win." "Can't you shut them down?" "Faith, they aren't a small firm. They have a lot of financial backing and wealthy clients. Demons aren't their only clients, they defend human scum too." "Oh, at least you can beat them in court." Faith felt like going out there and kicking their greasy lawyer butts herself. "Anyway, my source says that slayer's identities should be kept secret, so why were you so willing to tell me?" "You told them about me?" Faith asked her shoulders stiffening. "No, I asked him if he knew what a slayer was and he did." Kate watched as Faith took the information in. "He gave me a bit more information than you did." "You accusing me of holding back?" Faith dropped her fork on the plate. "Let's be honest here, Faith. I don't know much about you or your special abilities. Sometime in the future, not now, I want to know more. " "So one day in the sack and you think you have a right to order me around." Faith stood up, making the chair scrape on the floor. "I don't have the right to order you to do anything. I want, no, I need to understand a few things. It doesn't have to be right now or tomorrow. I have no idea what a slayer really is. If you die or are immortal," Kate said and looked up concern on her face. "What to do if you hurt yourself. Do I take you to a hospital or is that redundant?" Kate stood and levelled her eyes to dark ones. "Faith, I'm flying blind here and I don't like it." "I'm human, Kate," Faith replied softly. She couldn't stand to see her like this. "But I don't like hospitals." She visibly shivered at the thought of having spent eight months in one. "I die like everyone else. When I do, another slayer will be called to replace me. Dying is the only way I lose my powers. Anything else you want to know?" She demanded hoping that was the last of it. Tomorrow she could get out of here and never see Kate again. "For now," Kate said not wanting to upset her more. "Except why you told me." "You already figured out the vampire bit, besides you were getting nosy." Faith sat back down and picked up her fork trying to effectively ending the conversation. Kate persisted, "Faith, I want to know because I care about you." "Care?" Faith threw the words back knowing she was hurting Kate. "You shouldn't." "Too late." Kate came around and moved Faith's chair back from the table. She took the fork from Faith's hand and placed it behind her on the table. She then straddled Faith's legs, putting her arms around the back of her neck. "Way too late," she whispered and leaned in for a kiss that Faith accepted but didn't encourage. "And don't tell me you feel nothing for me, because we both know that isn't true." Pulling Kate back Faith looked pensive. "I shouldn't be doing this." "Why not?" Kate gave her another kiss. "You're right, you don't know a thing about me. That's the way it should stay." Putting her hands around Kate's waist, she tried to help the detective off her lap. It didn't work. "Where were you born?" "Huh?" Faith's hands moved to cup Kate's ass. "You heard me just fine." Kate couldn't help but grind her hips a little. "Boston." Faith thrust up into her. "East Coast girl," Kate managed to get out before their lips came together again, this time Faith controlling. "Something wrong with that?" Faith asked as she moved her lips lower. "Not at all," Kate moaned as Faith started a slow grind into her. "Did you play any sports at school?" "What's this, twenty questions?" Faith picked up her pace. "Just getting to…know you." Kate gave up trying as Faith undid the fly of her pants. ******************* Kate woke the next morning wrapped up in naked Faith. She couldn't believe it had only been twenty-four hours since they'd become lovers. Lover, she thought, haven't had one of those for a long time. Well, not one that she wanted to remember. She reached out her hand and moved a strand of hair over Faith's closed eyes. "Do you have to wake me at this hour?" Came a husky voice. "Yes, it's how I get my kicks." "I thought you got your kicks last night." Faith loosened her hold. "Wasn't enough." "You seemed satisfied enough." Faith opened her eyes focussing on the beautiful face. "I am," Kate answered. "I'm getting up before you entice me into another session." She drew the covers back taking in Faith's naked form. "You better stop looking at me like that then." Faith laughed as Kate caught herself eyeing Faith's body for too long. "Go back to sleep, I'll see you tonight." "Might be out slaying." Faith felt cold as she lazily watched Kate leave the bed and pad across to the wardrobe. "Okay." Kate was thankful she had her back to Faith as a frown appeared on her face. "Just because we've slept together doesn't mean we change our whole schedule." Faith studied Kate's butt, licking her lips. "Besides I'll be more than ready when I come home." "And it doesn't mean I'm going to be at your beck and call when you're horny," Kate said as she started for the door. "Right," Faith mumbled pulling up the covers and rolling away from Kate. She heard her stomp out the bedroom and the bathroom door close. Now she remembered why she hadn't had a relationship in a long time. Not that there was anything to her and Kate, they just fucked each other. No need to get all serious. ************************************** When Kate got in that night there was a note laying on the desk. 'K, thanks for the memories but I gotta go. Don't feel too bad. Faith.' She screwed up the paper and threw it down. Looking for Faith's things she found that Faith had left everything that wasn't hers. On the desk were the apartment keys and other borrowed items. Damn, she said out loud, damn it. She took her own keys from where she threw them and went back out on the streets, checking out places where they had gone hunting. After an hour and ready to give up the almost futile search, Kate heard the sounds of a fight coming from a back alley. She raced out the car, drawing both gun and stake and descended into the dark street. She was too late, the fight was finished, but the victor was human. Faith. "You're a coward, you know that." She put the stake back in her pants and slowly approached the dark figure. "Better than being a loser." Faith eyeballed the gun that was still drawn. "What, you gonna shoot me?" "The way I feel at the moment I just might." Kate kept closing the gap. Faith chuckled, "You know I could give you a bang without the gun involved." "Funny, I would have sworn you leaving put an end to that." "I'm always up for one last go around. You?" Faith stayed still while Kate stopped a couple of feet from her. "Not here." Kate lowered her gun hand. "Why not. Public places always get me off." Faith stepped closer. "Perhaps you should go solo if it turns you on so much." "It's always more fun with two." Faith invaded Kate's space, drawing her face into her and then pulling back again. "Come back with me." Faith waggled her finger. "No no no. I'm not falling for that. Who do think I am, Detective?" "A coward." Kate finally holstered her gun. "You said that already. Broken record, much." "Doesn't make it any less true." "So you want to do it or should I go find someone else?" Faith smirked when Kate's expression turned dangerous. "You got a place to stay?" "Not yet." Faith leaned in again. "But that's easily fixed." "Come back with me, just for sex." Kate pulled Faith in and kissed her hard. Faith wiped her lips as they broke apart. "Want me to pay you?" Kate swung her arm back, ready to slap, but dropped it at the last instant. "And you call me a coward," Faith taunted, "go ahead and do it." "I'm not going to hit you. You've had too much of that in your life." Kate crossed her arms. "Spare me the pity," Faith spat out. "Not pity, fondness." "Even now?" Faith turned sideways to her and laughed. "I thought you were smarter than that, Detective Lockley." "You know, I was hoping you would stay, but I think I always knew it was only a matter of time before you shot through," Kate said sadly. "Just know you are still welcome in my home." Kate waited but Faith stood still not facing her, so she walked slowly back to her car wishing Faith would follow her. She got in and waited a few more minutes before reluctantly giving up and driving off. Faith watched from the shadows. As the car engine faded in the distance, she slumped down on the cold concrete, her head in her hands. Kate really cared about her. She hadn't expected that. Somehow, she wished she had been hit, it would be easier to deal and move on. Sure B had made the same kind of promises, but Kate
